Turhan Jamison is destined to be a prominent name in the music industry being born into a very talented household; his father was a quartet gospel singer with the first gospel group to be signed to a major national and international label that we all know as CBS. And his mother traveled and performed as well as background to some of gospels legends to date, so the saying the apple doesnt fall far from the tree really applies...

OTR – First let’s talk about your single “Get It Right”, it’s really hot. How did you come up with the lyrics?
Jamison – Aww man, that single is a true story about a past relationships and break ups, when things aren’t going well and you trying to get right.
OTR – Would you say you’re the new face of R&B
Jamison – I don’t know about being the new face of R&B but I would say I’m the face of R&B Soul.
OTR – How long have you been singing?
Jamison – 7 or 8 years as a solo artist before that I was a background singer.
OTR – How is your style different from most R&B singers?
Jamison – The songs today is sex music, I’m bringing the love songs back. You can put my album in the car and won’t have to take it out when the kids get in.
OTR – That’s what’s up! We need more music like that. So who are some of the people you’ve worked with?
Jamison – Aww man, I started with Dwele he’s out of Detroit. A few other people here and there.
OTR – You are currently signed with TJMG/Island Def Jam, how did that deal come about?
Jamison – That situation wow, shout out to TJMG/Island Def Jam. Um after I was with another major label it didn’t work out, I was independent for about 8-10 months. I talked with Universal and some other labels bur Island Def Jam loved the direction I wanted to go in, they were more about changing and evolving the game, so big shout out to then.
OTR – Congratulations on your deal, that’s major! So if you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
Jamison – I don’t know..playing in a band. I’m a musician first, then artist then writer!
OTR – Is there a special someone in your life, are you dating?
Jamison – I wish I could date, ever since the single came out I’ve been going full force. Dating is like a luxury. I don’t have time, it’s hard!
OTR – Would you say you’re a sex symbol?
Jamison – Lol! Absolutely not, I haven’t taken off my shirt yet.
OTR – Lol! That’s too funny! So tell us what’s next for Jamison?
Jamison – I’m dropping something for Valentines Day, something for the ladies it’s really valentines day ish lol. Other than that more interviews, more music and more work!
All I can say is ladies look out for him, and fellas you could learn a thing or two. Lol! Check out his single : Get It Right and follow him!

IF DWELE & ERIC ROBERSON WERE SIBLINGS then this industry new comer, musician, songwriter, soul singer would have to be their little brother that’s very intrigued by the introduction of neo-soul and alternative soul in which his brothers do so well. But the reality of it is the r&b/soul artist “JAMISON” don’t exactly have that type of family background. The 24 year old TJMG/Island/DefJam supported artist is a Motown representative even though he was born in Charleston, S.C. to two gospel singers.
Jamison’s mother travelled & sung background for some of gospels greatest such as Pastor. Shirley Ceasar, Bill Moss, & Dorthy Norwood to name a few. Now Jamison’s father is one of the members of the Quartet gospel trailblazers better known as the “CBS Trumpeteers” (One of the 1st Quartet gospel acts to be signed to a major record deal with CBS). So to say “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” is an understatement.
Armed with the knowledge gained from one failed major recording contract due to unstable management the Detroit native has grown to the wise releasing his first single in December 2010 titled “Get it right” which focus on the short comings of relationship building to his summer 2011 release “Voicemail” to energize the public for an exceptional body of work titled “Music, Shades & tea…” due out winter 2011. Jamison is working with the lights of great established producers, songwriters and even musicians and needless to say amazing features! To bring you a project that will equal to his style, REAL.

INSPIRE Magazine | thecoldbutterfly.com34 -Jamison I sland/Def Jam singer/songwriter Jamison is one smooth crooner. He effortlessly steals the hearts of young women with his sultry and airy sounds fused with an overabundance of sex ap-peal. As far as comparisons go, he sounds just like a young R-Kelly in his 12 Play days. And that in itself is saying a lot. After months of grinding in the studio, Jamison is gearing up to release his mixtape Music, Shades, and Tea just in time for the winter-boo months of the holiday season. His music is the perfect soundtrack to be shared with that special someone on any given intimate evening. We caught up with the rising star at the Urban Spice Fashion Show here in Atlanta to ask him a few questions before his big release. If he looks familiar, it’s because we premiered his video Get It Right on our blog last month. Be sure to check him out. Music Shades and Tea words by Corey Jackson / photography by BlackIce Bell

35 C*: We first met you on Eric Roberson’s bus after his Mr. Nice Guy show here in Atlanta. What influence has he had on your career? Jamison: Wow, “influence” is an understatement, Eric is my mentor. I was introduced to his music some years ago while in New York negotiating the release from my last major contract. So needless to say I started as a fan, but a fan eager to un-derstand the craft. We met in person about a year ago and the lessons began, even beyond the music. From him I’m learn-ing how to be a real artist not a “celebrity”, how to conduct business correctly, and how to appreciate the opportunities the music gives us without abusing it. He’s a pretty cool guy.C*: How did you end up connecting with Island Def Jam Music Group? You mentioned to me once before that you were doing some work with Wale for your project. How’s that coming along? Jamison: Well, first the Island deal came about by chance, We were actually about to go with another situation literally hours before, when I received a text message asking if I was in Atlanta, and do I still have the “Get It Right [witchu]” record, and if I did, to bring it over to his studio ASAP! When I got there, there were two execs from Island Def Jam. We put the CD in and the rest was history! And as far as the Wale situation, we’ve always ran into each other on the road and we both always say “we need to work”, but because of countless obstacles it never came to pass until I met up with a member of his BOA team. I told them what I was working on, but he was heavy on recording his latest release. They were still able to get me a blessing from him that you will hear on the mixtape. C*: Musically, what can we expect from you on your new mixtape? Jamison: From “Music, Shades & Tea” you can expect a clear vision to who I am as an artist. If you listen closely you may be able to pin-point what direction I’m taking next, but all in all you’re gonna get good music with no gimmicks. Just music!C*: What inspired the title of the mixtape Music, Shades and Tea? Jamison: Well, when we started this project I knew I wanted to express myself in every aspect of the project, and I wanted to introduce myself to those that didn’t know or understand what I or my music represented. It only fit because in my profes-sional career I can’t remember the last time I was without those 3 elements. Music in my ears, shades on my face, and tea in my hand.C*: What about your stage presence and delivery sets you apart from every other aspiring RnB singer in the game right now? Jamison: Ha! I don’t take my clothes off or dance (laughing). I study older entertainers, and I study how they morph into the music and connect with the audience through the music. I’m just all about the music, and every stage I get the opportu-nity to perform on, that’s my ultimate goal to accomplish before my set is over. C*: After hearing your live performance I instantly could hear how seasoned and polished your vocals are. For how long have you been singing and how did you get your start? Jamsion: I’ve been singing solo now for about 7 or 8 years. I started off as a quartet gospel musician; a drummer to be exact. Then several instruments later a background singer, and eventually someone at the right time thought I had a great look, and thought my vocals were pretty good, and again the rest became history.C*: What is your favorite type of tea and where do you get it from? Jamison: (Laughing) I’m a real big “Orange Blossom” fan. I get my fix from Starbucks... interesting question. - ATLinspired magazine
