"While covering the first annual Chicago Independent Music Awards, we had the opportunity to interview two of Chicago’s rising stars, Hunnid, nominated for Best Hip Hop Entertainer and Justin Ruff for Best R&B singer.
Hunnid whose been causing a buzz from his mixtape M.O.M.M (Mind On My Mentalz), found here, for its strong and realistic verses. He’s also known for making the music that the people living the grind can relate to, but don’t let the grind music make you think that he’s not versatile, he has something for everyone on M.O.M.M. 4" - Underground Joyride
Lonely At The Top de Hunnid X Streetz est notre dernière découverte rap.
- Iggy Magazine
As a veteran music blogger I’ve experienced a plethora of dudes who say they really live that life and their music should be more recognized. They are often full of shit. My thoughts are similar to Hunnid, Streetz and M.A.G.’s 2018 collab Like That. These 3 are a hip hop match made in heaven with undeniable chemistry. On this track, the trio share their perspectives on fake rappers who claim they are saying and doing things they’re clearly not. They also speak on violence and the horror that many are experiencing in Chicago.
Yes, this track hit harder with street hip hop heads, but their appeal reached farther. All 3 show strong characteristics of Wu-Tang Clan members Redman, Method Man and Raekwon in their writing skills and effortless transitions. But don’t take my word for it. In just two weeks of its release the music video accumulated over 30K video views. - Flows for Days
In my time listening to hip hop (since the 1990's) I've not heard anything like Hunnid before. This is a single song called "Buss That" and it has a catchy chorus as it's just a matter of singing along with "Buss that, baby, buss that" and I feel like it could be a strong radio single in that sense-- because it has that pop appeal within the chorus but what it could be compared with in terms of other songs I've heard is not so easily defined.
The music feels like, it feels fun and free. These tones behind the beats are like stepping on clouds or perhaps that old game Q-Bert. This is where it gets difficult to describe because on one hand, a lot of rappers who want to be lighter these days use autotune and back in the day I'd think of like Heavy D, for example, having a song like this but it's still not quite the same.
From "shimmy shimmy" to "cha cha cha" to "da da da da" there are some sounds to sing along with that aren't just words but one of my favorite lines in this song- and life in general now is:
"We love them hips / they move side to side / to compliment both them eyes to thighs"
So whether you're going to dance to this song at a moderate pace, want to sing along with the hooks or just need to impress your friends, Hunnid has got your back and is an artist worth looking out for, yes, even just based on one song. This is everything a single should be. - Raised by Gypsies
Chicago rapper, Hunnid goes a long way for his new single, “In Paris.” He describes the track as an “escape physically and mentally from my current chaotic environment, Chicago.” Over sparse drums and lush synth pads, Hunnid runs a double time flow that doesn’t let up until the R&B; influenced chorus. - Surviving the Golden Age
Hunnid X Streetz keep impressing the urban music scene with their latest release, “Lonely At The Top”, a fiery fusion between the best of Hip-Hop & Rap mixed with perfectly placed pop sonic textures.
Hunnid and Streetz poured their whole energy in this “Lonely At The Top”, and it can be felt at any given moment throughout the record. Their energy, message, and high-end lyricism make them artists to watch out for closely this month, without forgetting to mention their inspiring dedication to music, always striving to deliver the best songs to their rapidly growing fan base. - UK Hip Hop Talk
‘Fake’ people are all around you. They exist. It’s a thing. And it’s up to you to filter from the noise, and the detractors. HUNNID knows this and with collaboration with Streetz and M.A.G., outs the kind of personalities that makes this life interesting, but not very useful. Will they become your fan and work with you? Or will they derail you onto place that takes you down. It’s up to you. - Come Here Floyd
We were thrilled to hear that Hunnid X Streetz released a new single and upon hearing it for the first time it did not disappoint. The artist’s have a unique writing style. ‘Lonely At The Top’ is without a doubt some of their best work yet and it only gets better with time. Award-winning rapper out of Chicago, Hunnid, has just released something that will end the Summer just right for all of us. “Buss That” is the real deal and it's got a lot of the Hip Hop community excited for something.
“This record has so many elements to it technically and creatively. The foundation of the record is afro-beat based but was inspired by Lil Wayne “Back That Ass Up” with a touch of other 90's hit music. The above influences helped to create something truly unique but an easy/enjoyable listen to anyone.”
We've got Hunnid on record saying that his inspiration for this track was Lil' Wayne, and we're glad it's early Lil' Wayne, with all the rawness, all the creative lyrics that came with such a prolific rapper. To have an inspiration of that stature surely gives us a lot of hype of what we're about to listen to. The Punisher, as we like to call him around here because it hits you hard every time you listen to Hunnid. The way he manipulates the track flow and creates his own element of surprise to throw us off the scent, but it's such a great track that leaves no ear left unheard.
Do yourself a favor and take a sneak peak at “Buss That” by Hunnid. - EDM Sauce
Hunnid sets scenes for us on “In Paris” in his typically creative wordplay describing the environment and the vibe and the context of these mini-vignettes throughout the song. The beat and its layers of rhythm and electronic percussion and hazy synths with female vocals capturing a hushed, late night vibe as Hunnid looks out over the city from a terrace both admiring the “divine” sunsets that “focus the mind.” Hunnid reflects on the similarities and contrasting differences between Paris and the east side of Chicago. But he reminds himself not to take the experience for granted or to make too many comparisons. Rather he takes in the sites and appreciates how someone like him who encountered so much discouragement as an artist could be there performing his music except that this epiphany could have come to him in any city, it just happened to be in Paris. The song is interesting in that it mixes so many emotions and ideas together in a small space but says much about how so many of us have to grind so long and so often than we find it hard to enjoy our accomplishments when they come but that we need to no matter when that moment strikes and if it does so in an artistic and cultural world capital like Paris, that’s just the icing. A great emcee has soul. That thing where they connect with the listener, and can feel everything they’re saying. Hearing that hunger in their voice to snap all over the track, to the point you’re on the edge of your seat waiting to see if they pull it off. Hunnid and Streetz steps up and gets his just due on his new song “Lonely At The Top”
Hunnid and Streetz conquer the world on their new song “Lonely At The Top”.They utilize their high skill set of emceeing to display Hip Hop greatness, giving the listener a powerful flow, sharp lyrics, and a delivery packed with the ultimate conviction, that makes this gold. Hunnid and Streetzcome together just as well as any other Hip hop duo to create a modern rap sound with a golden age emcee prowess, that you haven’t heard done to such mastery till now.
Hunnid and Streetz “Lonely At The Top” is what you get when emcees tap into their superpower. The rapping is strong and the message is stronger. They puts on a master class to give the world a word they need to hear, putting on a rapping clinic to show they have all the talent in the world to overcome any challenge.

Born and raised in Chicago by his single-parent mother, Kelvin Jacobs acquired the name ‘Hunnid’ when a friend from a different side of town discovered that Kelvin was from 118th S. Eggleston.
This neighborhood was an area dogged by crime and poverty, referred to by many as ‘The Wild, Wild Hundreds’. From then on, his nickname stuck with him.
Bringing more artillery to his fight, Hunnid is also the founder of C.C.G (Committed to Comradery and Growth) – a talented team of solo artists, each with their own unique vision.
1) How do you think growing up in Chicago influenced your music style?
Growing up in Chicago influenced my music a lot, ranging from cadence down to the topics I rap about. Chicago has made me who I am from the way that I talk, walk and carry myself.
Like any other city, there’s a unique vernacular that that environment uses. When you listen to my music you can hear Chicago all in it. So it’s safe to say I’m a product of my environment.
2) What was it like creating your latest single “Money Up”?
This felt like a fun but tedious science project for me. It took a lot of time, there was a lot of experimentation but at the end the reactions have been worth it.
I compose records very quickly but with this being one of my singles I wanted it to represent me whole-heartedly and molded just right.
3) What was it like winning Best Chicago Artist during the Chicago Independent Music Awards in 2014?
It was an incredible feeling. You have to understand that I was fully independent without any help from a third party.
Succeeding in this industry without any kind of help is very difficult so to know that I made that happen by myself was highly rewarding.
4) What are your thoughts on staying independent or signing to a major label?
As of right now, I’m looking to stay independent unless a major label situation unfolds that is right for me. Although it makes the journey harder, I value the image and control that I have over my brand.
5) How do you feel about the independent hip-hop industry right now?
The independent scene is more populated than ever which makes it difficult for the quality to rise above the quantity. Honestly, I feel like an artist like me is needed. When everybody goes left, I tend to go right, which can be refreshing in this industry.
6) As an independent hip-hop artist grinding it out, what sort of promotion and marketing are you doing to stand out from the rest?
That’d be like giving you the recipe to the secret sauce and that usually never happens!
7) How do you currently make money as an independent artist?
Features, shows, selling merch and streaming.
8) How do you feel about hip-hop today?
Hip Hop today has a different sound. Everybody talks about the evolution of hip hop but I feel we have evolved more sonically than hip hop as a culture.
Artists and rappers now a days are into the creation of music without understanding that hip hop isn’t limited a genre. It is a culture.
With that being said, hip hop is the way you talk, the way you walk, the way you dress, and even the way you move. And I feel that hip hop now a days only embodies a portion of that.
9) What artists in the game today do you look at for inspiration?
I don’t look at any artists today for inspiration. However, I observe different artists and extract a particular quality that I may be lacking. This helps me improve my artistry and keeps me in the loop with current artists.
10) Who are your top 5 rappers dead or alive?
Tupac, Lil Wayne, Ace Hood, Rick Ross and Eminem. - Stop The Breaks (Hao Nguyen)
Talented urban artist, songwriter and producer Hunnid has dropped a brand new single “Lonely At The Top”.
The award winning artist from Chicago once again put his diversity and talent to play with this track that cuts across genres from rap to hip-hop to R&B.
Featuring the musical talent Streetz for the second time after “Like That”, they bring to life a blend of powerful lyrics, smart flow with top notch delivery in a fusion of old school hip-hop and rock that creates the best symphony you can find right now. - The Grid Magazine
With a relentless flow of references and imagery, “Drip Too Hard (CCG Mix)” by Hunnid draws for us in rich detail life coming up on the Chicago’s Southside. The gangs, the grind, the struggles, striving for self-improvement and ultimately keeping your head above water and the poetry that comes out of those experiences. The video for the song features Hunnid rapping with a brisk cadence and packing so much content into each line with an impressive economy. The insistent, dreamlike beat, a sample of warping guitar, shuffled claps and clicks like drum sticks on a wooden block, accents Hunnid’s storytelling perfectly. Throughout the song there isn’t some kind of tough pose, rather an attempt at preserving sensitivity and not being inured to hardship by becoming hard oneself. The music video is vibrant, urban scenery, graffiti and all, with Hunnid and his colleagues representing the kinds of people you might see every day in the Windy City. And of course a crane or two in the backdrop just like every rapidly gentrifying city of size in recent years. See the video below and check out Hunnid’s other musical adventures at the links following. - Queen City Sounds and Art
The Southside of Chicago raised emcee Hunnid journes to the darkest parts of the ghetto on his new track “No Lights.” Over a dark, cinematic backdrop he details the effects of poverty, crime and the cracks in between.Hunnid is devoted to bringing light to the issues of his community and helping in any possible way. His music often references both the good and the bad of being raised in such an environment. However, his mission transcends music as Hunnid participates in any events that involves the progression of his community. - The Word is Bond
This track is awesome if you want to be hyped up. The bass is heavy in this song and it makes you want to jump up and dance. The rapping is number one in my book. I recommend you take a listen and enjoy what you hear. - Reignland
Hailing from the Southside of Chicago, Hunnid just dropped his new single “Lonely At The Top.” Featuring a sample of the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby,” it would be easy to let the production do the talking but Hunnid and on the second verse, Streetz, employ an aggressive, unorthodox flow that does the sample justice. - Surviving the Golden Age
A thundering piece of production with some hard hitting claps makes for a well suited back drop for this song where Chicago rapper Hunnid drops some energetic bars about his experiences dealing with the justice and prison system. Set in a grimey disused warehouse this venue makes for a good metaphor for the jail system! This is a dope song, and a leaves a promising impression for his forthcoming music! Stream via Spotify and watch below! - Blatantly Blunt
Hunnid takes the Dead President’s movie and puts his own spin on it, in the “Money Up” video. The video involves an intricate heist where Hunnid gets a tip from an inside man allowing him and his comrades to execute an entertaining robbery. The video is uniquely cinematic due to the fact that Hunnid is involved in the actual heist but also rapping/narrating the plot as the heist unfolds. The video was shot by Tev Desh and written/directed by Hunnid.
This is the video accompanying Hunnid’s recently debuted single, “Money Up”. This is an anthem about hard work, endurance and dedication, all of which can be easily seen through the visuals of this video. With many accolades already under his belt, including a nomination for Best Chicago Artist in 2014 in the Chicago Independent Music Awards, Hunnid is a one-man army on a mission to be the voice for those who are often silenced.
Through the years, Hunnid developed a flair for freestyling that stemmed from his natural adeptness to write poetry, leading to early recognition from his peers. Bringing more artillery to his fight, Hunnid is also the founder of C.C.G (Committed to Comradery and Growth) – a talented team of solo artists, each with their own unique vision. The group was created out of brotherhood, transcending far beyond music.
Hunnid recently borrowed Matty Ox’s “Overwhelming” beat for a fresh remix he calls a “CCGMix.” As he is known to do, he again took a killer beat and made the song his own.

Hi H, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been good, just keepin it 100. Nah, but seriously, I’ve been really blessed. Working as hard as ever and focused on winning in life.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Money Up”?
“Money Up” is ultimately a record about persistence and focus. In life, we all have distractions but in this particular case so-called friends and women were the distractions from the end goal, which was getting to the money.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The world in general. A lot of people lose sight of the end goal and get distracted with temptations. When I look at some people I see them trying to obtain goals with no value or simply wasting time. Looking at the world through that perspective helped me come up with the hook of the song, which resulted with Money Up.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Of course! You can’t drop a single without a visual. It’s already been shot and I directed it (may start referring to myself as Hunnid Speilberg). It’s influenced by a movie in the 90’s and turned out dope. Can’t wait to share with the world! It’s going to be dropping later this month, so be on the look out for that!
How was the recording and writing process?
Unlike the norm for me, this record took some time to create and get ready to release. I recorded and then re-recorded. I wrote and then re-wrote. And then I edited, then edited and then edited some more. None of this refers to the concept, just the fact that I wanted to present a sound body of work to the world.
What role does Chicago play in your writing?
Chicago is a big influence in my writing. I feel like Chicago is the co-author or co-writer in the story that I’m telling, not just this particular single but all of my work and life period. Growing up in Chicago allowed for certain experiences, both good and bad, to take place which has led to my perspective in music.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
At that moment, I have enough songs for an album but I’m not sure the world wants an album from Hunnid. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve, but an album isn’t one of them right now.
What personal vices will you be exploring on this record?
It’s really about just avoiding temptations and staying focused. That’s what the record is about but also applies to the process of me creating this record – I had to make sure I stayed focused and kept the end goal in mind.
Any plans to hit the road?
I think I’m on the road more than I am at home now. The next stop for me is NYC. I’ll be working on some future projects and media appearances.
What else is happening next in HUNNID’s world?
There’s a lot happening, but you’re just going to have to stay tuned in and keep it 100. And yes that means following me on all social media platforms and connecting with me LOL. - Vents Magazine (RJ Frometa)

His version is gritty, grimy and full of witty lyrics. "I ain’t really with the dancing shit, squad drumming like a band and shit. Boy i’m nothing like Chance the Rapper cause where I’m from we ain’t chancin’ shit.“
The video was shot on the streets of London, capturing some of their incredible graffiti and a biker gang. Even while in London though, Hunnid made sure to keep it Chicago. It was shot and directed by the artistic AMS at the Review Page and Produced by DJ L.

Hunnid starts the the year off right by dropping a CCGmix to Lil Bibby’s popular “You Ain’t Gang.” Keeping his lyrical reputation intact one bar at a time, Hunnid’s version is gritty, grimy and full of witty lines like, “I ain’t really with the dancing shit, squad drumming like a band and shit. Boy I’m nothing like Chance the Rapper cause where I’m from we ain’t chancin’ shit.“
The equally HYPE visual was shot across the pond, on the streets of London, where Hunnid repped his hood, still keeping it Chicago. “You Ain’t Gang” captures some of London’s incredible graffiti, a biker gang and Hunnid’s raw talent. It was directed by the artistic AMS at the Review Page. So, check it out and check in with a real one at @hunnid_ccg - Hype Off Life
Chicago’s Hunnid has plenty of Christmas fire for that a$$ on “Gifted.” The hype track puts Hunnid’s gifts on full display, with rapid-fire flows of street knowledge wrapped in holiday reference like, “Take a n*gga cookies like Santa Claus. Not the one to play, leave a n*gga paused… lotta drip on me like reindeer” and “40 kiss yo a$$ goodbye. Music videos shot in downtown Chicago are always a spectacle to behold and Hunnid’s new video for Lake Shore Drive is another example of that. Hunnid puts a Chicago spin on Drake and Blocboy JB’s hit Look Alive and shows he has some solid skill as an MC as he spits bar after bar for the whole song. With a confident flow and clever lyricism, Hunnid shows that pure rapping ability is still alive and well in Chicago and the video brings the track to life with a backdrop featuring some scenic parts of the Windy City’s downtown. If nothing else, in 2018 fans learned that Hunnid could not be stopped. His work ethic had never before been questioned, but after the untimely passing of his cousin and fellow hip hop artist Streetz, it appears that Hunnid has only gone harder. Most recently, Hunnid released the visual for “Like That” featuring Streetz and C.C.G. comrade MAG.
A testament to Hunnid’s strength and Streetz’ talent, “Like That” is an ode to posers. The song makes it undoubtedly clear to anyone claiming a lifestyle that they aren’t actually living that the world can see the truth.
Hunnid, Streetz, and MAG form a three headed monster, living fans to want for nothing. A barrage of punchlines delivered in three unique flows reiterates that the artists could inevitably stand alone, but together they are unstoppable. “Like That” is nearly six minutes of a verbal assailing that no artist or non-creative would want to be on the receiving end of.
The visual debuted on Black Friday and was directed by LB Vision. The concept is simple and features Hunnid, MAG, and a number of others sitting on the large porch of an abandoned home. Clips of Streetz rapping and commingled with those of news coverage of his tragic death earlier this year. - Megamazings Music box
Buss That is a smooth reggae/afrobeat influenced track that gives off that summer vibe. It reminds me of when Chief Keef made that reggae track Can You Be My Friend. It’s always fun to hear real hard rappers make tracks like this. He borrows the line “After you pick it up and stop” from Weezy and even mentions them in the track. He relates a woman’s body to a gun which is really unique. Buss that like a glock is essentially what he wants this young lady to do. There are a lot of catchy parts to this track that makes you want to bop to this crazy. Even when he’s just singing “da da da da da”, the verse is fire. It just rides with the beat which is really amazing by the way. he released this at the end of summer, but it still is giving off strong summer memories. I can say that I’ll be playing this over and over again. It’s a hit. Take a listen for yourself below - Purple Bars
Chicago spitter Hunnid merges Caribbean rhythms with 90’s Hip Hop aesthetics for a Mantra produced club banger called “Buss That!” Taking inspiration from Lil Wayne’s “Back That Ass Up,” the award winning artist on the rise persuades legions of beautiful women to gyrate the night away by showcasing melodic chatting & catch phrases that fit the propulsive afro-beat foundation like a glove.
Once the dance floor seduction begins, Hunnid experiments with various vocal cadences to maximize the fun while he simultaneously turns up the heat. The rapper’s charismatic delivery pushes the action to the apex of excitement for a track music lovers worldwide will feel compelled to keep on REWIND. - Insomniac Magazine
Although summer is winding down, Chicago-based artist/producer Hunnid still has us covered on the warm island vibes with his latest single “Buss That” produced by Mantra.
On the track, Hunnid uses witty wordplay to compare a woman’s dance moves to that of a firearm while keeping things fun and flirty.
The Caribbean undertone mixed with classic rap references makes the song worth the stream time and even comes equipped with a vibrant lyric video seen below.
“Buss That” is just a taste of what’s to come from Hunnid as he continues to put the finishing touches on his upcoming EP that’s due out soon.

Describe your sound:
My sound is it's sound. It's old school but yet new age at the same time. It's aggressively passionate but still lyrically nurturing. It's powerful while being subtle.

The video is uniquely cinematic due to the fact that I am involved in the actual heist but also rapping/narrating the plot as the heist unfolds. The video was shot by Tev Desh and written/directed by Hunnid (myself).

Hunnid is an award winning urban artist, songwriter, producer and engineer, born and raised in Chicago. Today, he exclusively premieres his new record with us titled “Money Up.” Produced by Aaron Sumlin, “Money Up” is about hard work, persistence and the focus it takes to really strive in the industry. In life. we all have distractions, but in this particular case, so-called friends and women were the distractions from the end goal, which was getting to the money! - HipHop Since 1987
Chicago MC Hunnid has dropped new single “Money Up.” The visual treatment for the video, premiered with Above Average Hip-Hop, sees Hunnid run a complex heist. The track is an anthem dedicated to hard work, endurance, and doing whatever it takes to overcome personal vices – all staples of Hunnid’s career thus far. Hunnid has mastered the DIY approach, mixing and mastering all the music himself, running his marketing campaigns, and doing his finances and bookings.
Speaking to Stop the Breaks, Hunnid said –
“I feel like an artist like me is needed. When everybody goes left, I tend to go right, which can be refreshing in this industry.”
With many accolades already under his belt, including a nomination for Best Chicago Artist in 2014 in the Chicago Independent Music Awards, Hunnid is a one-man army on a mission to be the voice for those who are often silenced.

Q: ARTIST NAME?
A: Hunnid
Q: Describe your style of Music?
A: I find it very difficult to categorize myself because I don’t fit within a certain box. However, I was told that the genre title that best fits me is called Trap Conscious.
Q: Explain what your name means?
A: Authenticity, non-fiction, honesty, vulnerability, strength and realness. All of those define Hunnid.
Q: What city and state are you representing?
A: Chicago, IL
Q: Describe your style of singing or rapping?
A: As far as singing goes, I’m not a Weeknd or a Lloyd. However, I can harmonize and manipulate my voice to blend with the melody of the beat. So when it comes to singing my range is limited but versatility is not. For rapping, my style can be described as passionate, aggressive, rebellious, confident, witty and sometimes even comical. I hope you’re ready for this – but if you were to put Tupac, Big Sean, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, J.Cole, Andre 3000, Donnelle Jones and John B together you’ll get Hunnid.
Q: Who inspired you to pursue a music career?
A: Nobody really inspired me to pursue music. I always intrigued by poetry and the manipulation of words. This started at an early age, with my first poem being published at the age of 9. This particular craft just stuck with me, which transitioned to music.
Q: Describe your feelings when you’re recording music in the studio?
A: When I was a kid, music wasn’t my primary focus. I was in love with basketball, video games and just living life. My childhood has it’s own story but I shared the same expectations as a regular kid.
Q: What is the message behind your music?
A: Prosperity, overcoming adversity, rising above whatever obstacle is thrown your way, never surrendering, standing up for what’s right and most importantly being yourself.
Q: What do you fear the most in this business?
A: Failure
Q: Are you excited to be featured in RNH Magazine?
A: Yes, of course!

We are pleased to inform you that your song ‘Let It Blow’ hit the #1 position on the charts and held that position for an impressive period of time in the month of December 2014. Chart position was established by number of spins, listener requests and station tune-ins. This accomplishment is a tribute to your talent, hard work and perseverance. We are certain that this is only the beginning of your success. - Akademia Radio Division

With the success of his debut radio single 'Let It Blow', this rapper from the south side of Chicago is proving he's got the desire, skill and perseverance to reach mainstream audiences.
There is something complex and earnest about south side Chicago native One Hunnid and his music. For starters, music has always been in his life since childhood, though it wasn't until he turned eighteen that he began to take it seriously and delve into the craft. Since then, his music has been recognized by various music organizations such as The Chicago Independent Music Awards and The Akademia Music Awards. However, even as the accolades came in, he realized that his interests lay in something deeper than just the music itself. In his own words 'I'm speaking for those people at the bottom without power or a voice. It’s bigger than me!’ Unlike many other rappers, there is discernible sensitivity and passion in One Hunnid's voice and lyrics that audiences find easy to connect with. According to him, ‘My goal is to bring power to the powerless through music'. If the success of his recent radio single is any indication, that philosophy is serving him and the listeners well. Independent reporter Lauren Thompson recently interviewed this intriguing new artist to get an inside look at his career, musical inspirations and plans for the future.
LAUREN: When did you first discover your love of music?
ONE HUNNID: I discovered music early as a kid. I remember grandma blasting music and cleaning up the house while she was singing oldies. Although music always had my heart, it didn't become my passion until later in my life.
LAUREN: Your song 'Let It Blow' has received a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
ONE HUNNID: You know how a little girl screams inside once she sees her favorite boy band in real life that she only gets to watch on TV? Yeah, that's how I felt ha-ha. Nah, I was relieved, excited, more hungry and humble once I heard myself coming out of the speakers. It's one of those moments that provide reassurance and keeps you glued to the ground.
LAUREN: What was the inspiration behind your debut radio single?
ONE HUNNID: The inspiration behind ‘Let It Blow’ came from me wanting to create a fun record people can recite and bounce to. Since fans are used to me being so aggressive on tracks, I felt I would slow it down and vibe with them on this record. I wanted ‘Let It Blow’ to have that addicting club feel but still remain me and different.
LAUREN: Would you say that the mood of your other songs is in the same vein as your debut radio single?
ONE HUNNID: I would say that the moods of my other songs are definitely different. The range in mood of my songs are scattered because I try to incorporate that genuine human emotion. So in other words I have songs that are happy, sad, exciting, depressing, etc. I feel that as an artist I can't surround my music with one mood because there's more dimensions to me, I have more than one emotion.
LAUREN: How would you characterize yourself as a musician? (Ex. Down-to-earth, serious, fun-loving...)
ONE HUNNID: I wish there was a word to describe me as a musician, ha-ha. I'm goofy, overprotective, humble, caring, serious (when I need be), down-to-earth and stubborn. I’m many things but at the end of the day I'm still just Jake, that guy from the south side Chicago.
LAUREN: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
ONE HUNNID: I actually did not and no there isn't, however we all are big music heads. I think that's where my development into a musician came from because music was being played all the time. It's pretty hard not to become something that's in your face all the time.
LAUREN: What do you find most rewarding about being a musician? What do you find most challenging?
ONE HUNNID: The most rewarding part about being a musician in my eyes is connecting to other individuals through music. I can't describe the feeling when someone miles away relates to a song of mine. It's something that doesn't come with a price in this business. I think even the greats will co-sign this but creativity is the most challenging. The hardest challenge to me isn’t creativity itself but maintaining that creativity and keeping your music fresh. Repetition gets old so keeping that creative approach is a necessity for longevity.
LAUREN: Who are your role models in music?
ONE HUNNID: I don't like the weight ‘role model’ carries so we're going to substitute role model with ‘idol.’ With that said, my idol is Tupac Shakur. Tupac Shakur was a relentless visionary that channeled passion, relevance, aggression and pain into a voice for underprivileged America. It's definitely more than music but that's where the voice of the people starts.
LAUREN: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
ONE HUNNID: My most memorable performance was actually a freestyle battle a couple years back in college. It was crazy because it was a cypher and I had no intention of rapping let alone battling. I was just sitting back just listening to the new guys and then one of my fans is like ‘hop in man, shut it down.’ After that, it turned into an intense freestyle battle between me and some freshmen. People were chanting names and going crazy but overall, it was a good time. We're supposed to have footage but to this day, I still haven't seen it.
LAUREN: Do you have a music video for your hit single? If so, what can you tell us about it?
ONE HUNNID: I actually do not have a video for this single but that's definitely in the works. I didn't expect this record to blow up but I always believed this record had potential. The song ‘Let It Blow’ is actually 1 1/2 years old but feels brand new.
LAUREN: What advice would you give to young, aspiring musicians out there who are unsure and need guidance?
ONE HUNNID: I would tell other upcoming artists to separate themselves from the in crowd. No one wants another Lil Wayne, Drake or Gucci Mane; be yourself and stay true to that. Use your creativity to create a new lane instead of joining an existing one. Respects rest with the originator, not the imitator.
LAUREN: What's next for you as an artist? Is there a new single in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
ONE HUNNID: I am currently working on the business behind the music as well as several projects that will be released next year. There's actually a mixtape dropping soon called M.O.M.M. 5 (Mind On My Mentalz 5), which is the last of its series. So make sure you log on to your nearest computer and hit the download button. There will be much more from One Hunnid so tune in and turn up the volume. In the meantime let it blow!
LAUREN: Excellent! Thanks for taking time out to share your story with me. I wish you good luck and continued success!

Bio
Hunnid is an award winning urban artist, songwriter, producer and engineer with many accolades already under his belt. Continuously raising the bar higher for himself, the one-man army is on a devoted mission to be the voice for those who are often silenced.
“In my time listening to hip hop (since the 1990's) I've not heard anything like Hunnid before. This is a single song called "Buss That" and it has a catchy chorus as it's just a matter of singing along with "Buss that, baby, buss that" and I feel like it could be a strong radio single in that sense-- because it has that pop appeal within the chorus but what it could be compared with in terms of other songs I've heard is not so easily defined.”
⁃Raised By Gypsies
Born and raised in Chicago by his single-parent mother, Kelvin Jacobs acquired the name ‘Hunnid’ when a friend from a different side of town discovered that Kelvin was from 118th S. Eggleston. This neighborhood was an area dogged by crime and poverty, referred to by many as ‘The Wild, Wild Hundreds’. From then on, his nickname stuck with him. It would become his identity when he went on to gain rapid recognition in high school. This recognition began when Kelvin started spitting epic freestyles over heavy beats created by peers who would pound their fist on the lunch table in a melodic manner. His flare for freestyling no doubt had a lot to do with his natural adeptness to write poetry, which once even led to a piece being published at only 10 years old.
“Hunnid draws for us in rich detail life coming up on the Chicago’s Southside. “
⁃Queen City Sounds And Art
Hunnids music truly has no boundaries. Garnering international attention, Hunnid’s music is leaving an impression on listeners across the globe. Starting in the wretched neighborhoods of Chicago, to the slums of the UK, all the way down to the providences of Africa, Hunnid’s talents are reaching millions.
“Une chanson excellente qui sonne comme la parfaite parenthèse musicale au moment où les vacances touchent à leurs fins. Comme nous aimons le dire, tout le monde devrait avoir sa petite dose de hip-hop quotidienne. Ce moment agréable où des flow de qualité s’écrasent sur des instrumentaux d’une qualité impeccable. C’est de cela dont il s’agit ici.”
⁃Iggy Magazine
Hunnid learned the importance of having a solid work ethic from a young age, by seeing how hard his mother worked to provide for him. His grandmother, who would play her records extremely loud majority of the time, exposed him to the power of music. It makes sense that those deep-rooted values and experiences would help form the imposing presence that Hunnid exuberates on stage, as well as his hard head for business.
His one-man method has won him awards and earned him multiple nominations, not to mention a string of other achievements.
“The Punisher, as we like to call him around here because it hits you hard every time you listen to Hunnid. The way he manipulates the track flow and creates his own element of surprise to throw us off the scent, but it's such a great track that leaves no ear left unheard.
Do yourself a favor and take a sneak peak at “Buss That” by Hunnid.”
