Band: Honest Monday, Album: self-titled, Honest Monday
There are several artists that come to mind over the course of listening to Honest Monday’s self-titled album: Eric Clapton, Jack White, Ray Charles, the Allman Brothers Band and even the Rolling Stones. All of the above artists at some point in their careers have demonstrated a deep fascination with the blues origins of the Mississippi Delta, in the process creating more approachable and up to date versions of old blues staples. Honest Monday manages to do the same for the current generation, a feat few attempt nowadays and even fewer manage to accomplish. The fact that their repertoire isn’t just limited to the blues makes this album even more impressive, as roots and folk is explored quite a bit, as well. There’s no question that, given the chance, Honest Monday would go quite far, as their musicianship and taste is superior to that of their peers.
Track 1: “Miss Maybe” is a grand blues stomp that is highly evocative of music heard in one of those genuine smoky blues houses you can picture in a movie.
Track 4: “Rain and Rachel” has more of a bluegrass feel, giving the album even more depth with its Appalachian roots. This is a highlight of the album.
Track 5: “The Farm” is a slow-burning, bluesy tune in the style of B.B. King. The thick, drawling vocals are hypnotic, especially when harmonized. The electric guitar work is outstanding as well, and the stand up bass is simply magnetic.
