Sometimes becoming a band is a lot like becoming a couple in junior high: exciting and new, but totally nerve-wracking. You see, in order to form a band, you have to ask somebody to play with you, and then, if you hit it off, you agree to play together as one. Talk about a sweaty hands, hearts pounding kind of beginning.
This is how Wellington resident Blake Burns, 33, lead vocalist and guitarist for rock band Hell & Hollar recalls feeling when he asked Johny Dusko, 30, to play with him back in 2015. Burns remembers shopping for a bass at Guitar Center on Okeechobee in West Palm that year. Dusko was working as a sales associate. Burns was looking for some pedals, while playing a guitar in the store, and that’s when Dusko noticed him.
“I like what you’re playing,” Dusko recalls telling Burns.

And the rest is history. After they talked about music for a while, Dusko told Burns he was also a musician: a bass player who graduated with a music degree from Berklee College of Music. Burns, on the other hand, is self-taught but had been playing for years following his instincts.
It was Burns who asked Dusko for the digits.
“It was like asking a girl out. I was all nervous and stuff,” said Burns. “I sent him a demo. I was afraid of sending it. I wasn’t sure if he would like it.”
Dusko was all in. He thought the 10-minute song with stop and go rhythm and bluesy sounds was ‘very cool’ and ‘dreamy’ but also simple. He also knew Burns didn’t have a bass player, and he would be a great fit for Hell & Hollar, which is a heavy rock-stoner kind of rock. Think Queens of the Stone Age-meets-Soundgarden.

Four barrels, four speeds, dual exhausts — the pervasive rumble of the American muscle car embodies a bygone era of can-do dispositions, no-dream-is-too-small spirits and fuck-with-me-you’re-fucking-with-the-best attitudes. A show of muscle is what it is; thick-necked, rippling violent potential humming along at top speeds.
Radio Birdman might’ve glammed the “455 SD,” but Delray Beach’s Hell & Hollar has the 442 market cornered. “My father sold Oldsmobiles his whole life,” guitarist and vocalist Blake Burns tells PureHoney. “I grew up around cars and my dad and I have always had a soft spot for the Olds Cutlass 442.”
Rounded out by Nate Largent on drums and backing vocals and Johnny Dusko on bass, H&H have been a’rumblin’ in South Florida for some time now and will be rolling out their own machine with a debut EP, “442,” which promises a “swinging new kind of excitement” and delivers with six tracks that blow right past the full-tank metaphor and go straight to nuclear.
The band modifies its blues and stoner-rock influences with parts from multiple genres. “We generally all have ideas we come up with at home,” Burns says of their process. “For us, the magic happens when we cut loose and just jam together. Let the universe come through our extremities. We will mic the entire room and hit record and just go off.”
Recorded at Nashville’s Lust For Tone Studio with producer Chris Condon, “442” clocks in at a little over 20 minutes, but the rubber is permanently burned onto the asphalt. Breezy in a way that creates the feeling of flight, heavy in the way a gut punch smarts and spreads to other organs, and tempered by chops and chemistry, “442” feels like an audio incarnation of the engineering care that went into its namesake.
Normally, the advice would be to not sleep on a band like this, but Hell & Hollar won’t mind if you do provided you’re just resting up for your next thrill ride — down your street, late at night, revved-up and hollerin’ like all Hell’s gotten loose.

Bio
Hell & Hollar is a rock band from South Florida featuring Blake Burns on guitar and vocals, Nate Largent on drums, Johnny Dusko on bass and Ian Pattison on guitar. Drawing from their many influences that span the areas of blues and heavy stoner rock, they are developing a brand of rock all their own. Their heavy yet inviting sound is a refreshing straight forward rock music that anyone can have a good time with. These guys have an old school heavy rock vibe with an open eye on the future.
