- Keep On Rockin (Germany)

Earlier this month, youbloom was lucky enough to get some precious air-time with the Hard-Rock maelstrom of female fury, Flight of Fire. Known for their fantastical live shows and superb rock compositions, this Boston-based band has been selling out shows and racking up awards for several years now. In this interview the ladies divulge their creative process, dole out advice for the unsigned artists out there, and share what’s on the band’s horizon. - You Bloom
Flight Of Fire has released a new song this week called Monster In The Mirror, in time for Halloween. Now the video and the song title fit the theme, but I think the song goes deeper than that. I think it’s about your personal struggle about what you see today and how you handle it. If you check out the following lyrics you can see that: - Seth's Rock Report

2017 MUSIC GENRE WINNERS. Americana/Folk/Acoustic - Flight of Fire "My Last Gamble" - Hollywood Music In Media Awards
Nominated for “Best in Americana/Folk/Acoustic” at this year’s Hollywood In Music Media Awards, the young quartet triumphed on the evening, and walked off with the award for ‘My Last Gamble’.
The track is lifted from the latest release ‘Path Of The Phoenix’, and while it may only be seven tracks in length, it sure as hell is the most varied thirty minutes I’ve heard in a long time. ‘Something for everyone’ is very much the order of the day, with ‘Path Of The Phoenix’. Classic metal? That would be ‘Ten Thousand Voices’, ‘One More Sip’ and ‘Daughters Of Venus’. Old school chugging guitars, galloping drums, machine gun bass, a hint of Dio here, a touch of Disturbed there… ‘epic’ in every sense of the word. The vocal harmonies are what help make Flight Of Fire stand out from the pack though, and the crisp production gives them an edge, as they soar around the listeners head. Lead vocalist Maverick (how come no-one ever wants to be Goose, eh?) possesses an almighty vocal range, equally at ease with the higher notes as she is with the more earthy lower end of the scale, as proven on ‘Rockstar Life’, which features some rather nifty vocals during the intro. Thankfully, Maverick doesn’t suffer from the same over-singing that blights so much music today. She carefully reigns in the vocal gymnastics (the kind that makes me want to stick sharpened pencils up my nose before slamming my face onto something hard every time Jessie J, for example, opens her mouth to sing). ‘Rockstar Life’ is much softer. It’s fun, catchy, and instantly gets the feet tapping. Job done.
Not just content with keeping the loud pedal floored, Flight Of Fire slow things down with ‘My Last Gamble’ and the spine-tingling ‘In Spite Of You’, two acoustically driven, but very different, moments. The former has a fantastic hand-clapping, foot-stomping vibe that gets better with each listen, while the latter is a stunning, personal moment which has Maverick raising her middle finger to everyone that put her down, similar in ethos to ‘Dear Daughter’ from Halestorm. Another name to throw into the hat would be that of Rush, early Rush especially. Some of the vocals towards the end of ‘One More Sip’ echo his lordship Geddy Lee (Lee fronting Iron Maiden though), as does parts of ‘Better Off Without You’. Some of the songs have complex changes in structure that come out of the left field. For instance, the aforementioned ‘Better Off Without You’ has a short drum solo that you would never have seen coming. It works though! Oodles and oodles of bass noodling from Tia Mayhem, combined with copious amounts of guitar fireworks from her identical twin Tanya Venom, help give the album an air of the unexpected. More than one occasion, I found myself going back to the start of a song to make sure that I heard a particular part correctly. Yep, that is a drum solo right there!
Eclectic, and hugely impressive, this is an album and a band defying pigeonholing.
‘Path Of The Phoenix’ is available now on Spotify, but you don’t want to do that. Head over to the official Flight Of Fire website, and get it direct from the band. Cut out the middle man, and deal with the organ grinder, not the monkey.

My Last Gamble – Winning track at Hollywood Music in Media Awards for Americana/Folk/Acoustic
Interview with Flight of Fire
Flight of Fire Promo w Text“We all strongly believe that the transfer of energy between audience and musicians is an intensely powerful thing.” – Flight of Fire
What were a couple runner-up names for the band before you settled on Flight of Fire?
What a cool question! We came up with our band name in a very geeky way, so we actually did have two clear runner-ups. The first was Drop of Flame and the second was Force of Flame. Personally, I think we made the right choice!
What is your creative process when writing?
We usually write songs individually. When they are mostly finished, we bring them to the band and everyone adds their own flare. Maverick will get picky about lyrics and improve melodies and Tanya will add solos. The twins write riffs together, and Tia and Maddie solidify the groove.
How has the LA music scene been different from the Boston music scene?
We haven’t spent enough time in the LA scene just yet to really be able to compare it to Boston, though in the few times we have come out, we have absolutely loved our experiences. One of the things we did notice is that there seems to be a lot more competition in LA as so many talented people flock to the city, however, there is also a plethora of experienced industry professionals providing an endless source of networking opportunities as well as offering more chances for encountering career-growing experiences. So it all seems to balance out.
“We don’t like our performances to be contrived at all, and we love to ride the waves when unexpected things happen!”
Youbloom, for example, has been so welcoming and supportive of us – we had such a great experience at the conference and met so many incredible people in the industry! It’s definitely very different, and each scene offers different things to artists and bands. We can’t wait to explore more about what it’s like to be a band in LA.
Flight of Fire is known for its high energy performances. What do you think it is that gives a band its charisma?

To us, it’s all about the live shows. We all strongly believe that the transfer of energy between audience and musicians is an intensely powerful thing. Live shows are our opportunity to show our fans how much we appreciate them, and it’s their opportunity to enjoy us in our element! It’s truly magical.
Would you say you have live shows down to a science, or is each one its own mystery going in?
We like to keep as much of our performances as spontaneous as possible driven by pure in-the-moment inspiration. We do plan our setlists, but we like to take the energy of the crowd into account and play off the emotions of the people watching us. Sometimes you have to diverge from the set list when the audience’s energy is calling for something specific.
We also like to include some memorable stage antics, like when we switch instruments and pull off wild stunts. But our philosophy is that what we do on stage should reflect how we are really feeling at the time. We don’t like our performances to be contrived at all. We love to ride the waves when unexpected things happen!
What’s the most memorable show you’ve ever played? Why?
Some of the most memorable shows we’ve played have been when we opened for big acts. When we opened for Bon Jovi at Ford Field, and that is an experience we will never forget. We also opened for Lita Ford at a smaller venue. It was a sold out show and her fans were so incredibly supportive of us making us feel like true rock stars that night. At those kind of shows, you hope that you’re seeing a glimpse of your future. Those are the moments that stick in our minds and inspire us to keep pushing on through any of the difficulties we might face.

Flight of Fire performing at youbloomLA Music Festival & Summit 2017
What good memory or experience did you have at the youbloom 2017 music festival?
So much of it was amazing! We are still so grateful that we got to come out and be a part of youbloom. We met so many incredible people. All the panelists we got to talk to were so encouraging, and the discussions really helped us solidify some of our strategies for the upcoming year.
“My Last Gamble won, and we never would have had that opportunity if it hadn’t been for youbloom and Shele Sondheim!”
Can you describe the events at the youbloom festival that led you to getting a Hollywood Music in Media nomination?
Shele Sondheim was one of the acclaimed panelists that we met at the festival. Shele was so kind and supportive to us and he connected us with Brent Harvey, the producer of the HMMAs. The two of them encouraged us to submit our song. Apparently it was a fantastic idea considering we actually took home a trophy that night. My Last Gamble won, and we never would’ve had that opportunity if it hadn’t been for YouBloom and Shele Sondheim!
What project do you currently have in the works?
We just finished recording a new single in the studio that features Cherie Currie from the Runaways. Cherie and Maverick share lead vocals on our song, She’s a Badass. It’s a testament to all of the female rockers who came before us and paved the way for musicians like us. The song will be released in early 2018.
What is the band’s vision going forward?
We have so much that we want to accomplish. Our most recent album, Path of the Phoenix, was released a year ago, and we already have so much new material for the next album we are hoping to record by the end of the summer, if possible. We are also looking at a tour in Europe and new music videos. Our biggest goal right now is to get a supporting slot on a tour with a band like Halestorm. That would be a dream come true.
“One of the most important things we’ve learned is that when you have somebody who believes in you, never take that for granted.”
What are your biggest challenges in reaching your vision?
As always, the biggest challenge is financial! It’s very difficult to make money with what we do. We are always doing our best to be savvy and find ways to make it happen! We will be launching a Patreon in January. That will give our fans the opportunity for a more intimate relationship with the band where they can directly support the music they love. We’re very excited about cultivating it, and that kind of support will make everything we are trying to do that much more possible!
What’s the best way fans-to-be can gain access to your music?
Our official website is the best way to get access to our music, videos and updates! From flightoffire.com, you can link to all of our social media as well, so whatever platform you prefer for following bands, you can find us there.
What advice would you have for upcoming bands/artists that are trying to get noticed?

FoF at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards Night 2017
One of the most important things we’ve learned is that when you have somebody who believes in you, never take that for granted. When you have a DJ play your music, an aspiring journalist who writes a review for you, a booker who hears you at a show and loves you, or any fan that tells you that your music has moved them or buys your merch, your job is to respond to them. Express your gratitude, let them know how much it means to you that they believe in what you are doing. If someone is going out of their way for you, make sure you go out of your way for them just as much. Especially in this ever-changing industry, we all have to stick together and support each other. It’s all about relationships – make sure you always pay it forward.
To stay up to date on what Flight of Fire is up to, you can check out their website, flightoffire.com and follow them on Twitter and Facebook. Their newest album, Path of the Phoenix, can be purchased on Bandcamp.

Deli Premiere: Flight of Fire Release New Video for "One More Sip"
Fresh off of their win at The New England Music Awards (Best in State-Massachusetts), Boston rockers, Flight of Fire continue to take the NE music scene by force. They have arrived, armed to the teeth with their album Path of the Phoenix, a 7-song concept album that spins a tale about "the treacherous journey of doing whatever it takes to follow your own truth". Their latest single and video for "One More Sip" (filmed at Hard Rock Boston), showcases one of the more blistering cuts on the album, while giving the viewer a taste of their high energy live set. Screaming guitars, grueling riffs, and powerhouse vocals abound as the all-female quartet take on Boston and beyond. Check them out at House of Blues Foundation Room on 5/12 with blindspot, Katey and the Illicit, and Wonder City. You can also catch them at the Mill City Ballroom on 5/18 as part of The Break Into Action Tour. -Brian Varneke - Deli Magazine
In an age where metal bands, for the most part, are writing hard music just for the sake of being hard, it's nice to find a band whos hard work is paying off. A band that adds a unique twist to the Heavy Metal/ Alternative music scene. That band is the Boston based all-female band Flight Of Fire.
8 years ago, identical twins Tia (Mayhem) and Tanya (Venom) Dmuchowski moved from their hometown in Detroit to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music with a mission to create an all-female rock band that could take on the world. When they arrived, they witnessed an unrestrained girl showing off on the train, singing "Long Time" by Boston at the top of her lungs on the crowded train. Inspired and hopeful, one of the twins approached this powerhouse and asked her, "Hey, you wanna join a rock band?" And the rest is Flight of Fire history...
Flight Of Fire spawned from their meeting and since then they have struggled, cried, laughed and fought to make their dreams come true. That dream is starting to now become a realization to the band, now backed with the talented drumming of Maddie May Scott.
Recently the ladies of "Flight" were nominated for their song "My Last Gamble" for Best New Music Video by the 2017 Worcester Music Awards. But the big nomination was from the Hollywood Music In Media Awards in the category of "Best In Americana/Folk/Acoustic. The honor of just being nominated alone was more than thrilling for the girls, who ended up winning the award:
Patrick@Crean.org 603-321-6019
The song is a stand out as Maverick described the message behind it:
My Last Gamble was written during a time in our career where we were at a crossroads, being offered promises by people whose intentions we couldn't be sure of, and we were considering taking big risks in search of big rewards. The song tries to capture what it's like to decide to put everything on the line for a dream you have no guarantee of achieving. It's about being courageous (and perhaps a little bit foolish), and doing what it takes to live a life with no assurances, no stability because your dedication to your art is more important than anything else. It's about the musician's way of life.
Flight Of Fire recently released a concept album titled "Path Of The Pheonix" which features "My Last Gamble," which can be purchased on their website.
I honestly and whole-heartedly enjoy their music. I think they bring originality to the music scene and I can't wait for them to come to Michigan again so we can bring them to you in person so you can experience the band do what they do best: melt faces.

Last week we met the bands. Now we meet the battles.
Yes, Boston, Rock And Roll Rumble season is in full swing.
Last night on 100.7 WZLX's Boston Emissions, host and Rumble curator Anngelle Wood selected the six preliminary week lineups for next month's "World Series of Boston Rock," which kicks off Sunday, April 2 at ONCE Ballroom in Somerville. Twenty-four bands will do battle over six preliminary nights, with a winner from each group moving on to one of two semi-finals. Two wild card bands -- one from Nights 1 to 3 and a second from Nights 4 to 6 -- will round out the prelim lineups. But that's getting ahead of ourselves.
We've long said the best part of the Rumble, a Boston institution since 1979, are these first preliminary nights, where four bands from across the music scene spectrum throw down in the name of friendly competition. It brings together bands that have likely never performed on the same bill as one another, and fans and friends who may never have partied in the same room. The lineups -- drawn at random by Wood live on Boston Emissions -- represent a cross-section of the music scene, and usually break down any sort of genre barrier.
It's a good time for all. So, how does the 2017 Rumble's preliminary week shake out? Scroll through the full list below, and get all ticket information, including Six Pack passes, through the official Rumble page at ONCE. Monday, April 3: Doors at 8 p.m., music at 9 p.m. [event page]
9:00 p.m.: You People
Location: Boston, MA. Bio: Boston’s You People have been quietly amassing crudely-drawn noise/pop songs. Fuzzed out rhythms circle around slashing feedback-soaked guitars. Poignant half-confessional/half-accusatory confessionals are sung in 3 part harmonies that seem on the verge of collapse. You People have been compared to the tripped-out dark twang of The Birthday Party, the casual pop infectiousness of Elastica, and the manic boozy energy of early Mudhoney. Their name, a common phrase meant to marginalize, is repurposed as a badge of honor. Their songs are about broken relationships, political paranoia, and the inner workings of playing music.
9:45 p.m.: Pulitzer Prize Fighter
Location: Weymouth, MA. Bio: Armed with a sound that they consider to be the perfect blend of Emo and R&B, Pulitzer Prize Fighter are equal parts emotional, cathartic, soulful and smooth. Pulitzer pairs elements of anxiety and self-destruction with an underlying groove that pushes to find the greatest possible Saturday night amidst a sea of disappointing ones. Their latest release, ‘Everything That Makes You Feel Tired’ comes rumbling up the stairs from the basement at your favorite house party. Pulitzer’s goal has and always will be to bridge the boundaries of heavier half-time singalongs with soulful introspective melodies.
10:30 p.m.: Flight Of Fire
Location: Boston, MA. Bio: Flight of Fire are a dynamic and passionate band exploring the musical textures of energetic hard rock, progressive heavy metal, and emotional folk rock. With varied inspiration contributing to their sound, these four accomplished women create the unique, intense sound that is highly-influenced by both classic and modern artists the likes of Led Zeppelin, Journey, Rush, Heart, The Who, Halestorm, Paramore, and Foo Fighters. Flight of Fire are a force to be reckoned with. Their latest release, a concept album about fighting oppression called Path of the Phoenix, was released in October of 2016. - Vanyaland

Flight Of Fire - 'My Last Gamble'
May 15, 2017
|
Bryon William
Flight Of Fire is a stand-out rock group from Massachusetts who blend elements of raw rock, progressive metal and emo-folk-rock to create a unique musical experience. “My Last Gamble,” a single off their album 'Path of the Phoenix' is a great way to introduce yourself to the intensity and vitality that is Flight of Fire. The song features Dorian Maverick (lead vocals), Tanya Venom (acoustic guitar, backing vocals, drums), Tia Mayhem (bass, backing vocals) and Maddie May Scott (drums, backing vocals).
"My Last Gamble" kicks off with the chorus sung a'Capella; vocal harmonies captivate from the get go. After the brief intro, an acoustic guitar commences with a grooving riff as Maverick's vocals take center stage. Maverick's voice is powerful and controlled with a shimmer of vibrato - she knows how to dig in and dish out just the right amount of grit and passion. With each passing verse and hook the instrumentals build, adding bar-chord progressions, bass and percussion, keeping listeners engaged and ready for more. By the third verse, the percussion creates a foot stomping vibe. There's a tinge of Southern rock here that can't be denied. By the end of the song the band is in an all-out jam that subsides as the vocals bring the song to an emotional end. “My Last Gamble” will keep listeners on their toes with memorable melodies and a kick-ass instrumental build, but don't take my word for it.
Check out their mesmerizing video. Watch for the moment when both Tanya Venom and Tia Mayhem (who happen to be twins) get on the same drum kit, each playing with one hand. The band's tight performance is impressive.
"My Last Gamble" is about risk and reward, rolling the dice and paying the price. “I know with great success comes great sacrifice / I took a leap of faith and I'm prepared to pay the price.” The verses each tell a story as the hook ties them together with the universal theme “Going all in, gotta roll the dice / One last chance to take it all tonight / This is my last gamble, my last gamble, my last gamble.” This song is the third track out of seven off their concept album 'Path of the Phoenix' which tells a story of a heroine that goes through war, abuse, and coercion, fighting through it all for her dream.
With "My Last Gamble" it's clear that the band is going all in. There is no gamble here. Flight of Fire is a sure bet. There is a fire in the soul of this band that comes from deep within, an energy that can't be contained - you can feel it. “My Last Gamble” is just one of many captivating songs that will instantly make you a fan. Their music is available for purchase via Bandcamp. The group has some major shows coming up including headlining at festivals. QWIMB sent Flight of Fire some questions about Boston and Queerness and here’s what they had to say:
What brought you to Boston?
Our lead singer, Maverick, and our guitarist and bassist, Tanya and Tia respectively, moved to Boston in 2009 to attend Berklee College of Music. Our drummer, Kat, is from Dracut, MA
Have you experienced a strong scene for Queer women in the city in terms of music/performers etc?
We’ve been inspired by so many of the amazing queer organizations in Boston! We’ve been involved with the Dyke March, both in their fundraisers and at the Dyke March itself, and our good friends Unstraight and Mad Femme Pride put on the badass Big Queer Show, which is always a great community of people!
Do you have any sense of a history of a Queer scene in the city?
We’re relatively new to the scene, so we can’t speak to Boston’s queer history as well as others could, but as newbies, we definitely feel that there’s been a strong queer musical community here for a while. We love volunteering for the Ladies Rock Camp Boston (& Girls Rock Campaign Boston), which, while not an exclusively queer movement, is certainly a feminist, empowering org that has been inspiring women to break barriers and make noise!
Flight of Fire
Flight of Fire
What made you decide to join a band?
We’ve been committed to music since we were little, writing songs, studying and performing as much as we could, which brought us eventually to Berklee! Once we were there, we shared a dream of forming an all-female rock band, and Flight of Fire was born.
Are there any artists that you look up to or who have inspired your own music?
We have been greatly inspired by bands such as Led Zeppelin, Rush and Heart in terms of their instrumental/musical prowess and variety. Lzzy Hale from Halestorm inspires us with her leadership skills as a woman in the modern rock industry.
flight-of-fire-pride
Do think things are getting better for Queer performers or are there still barriers to overcome?
Both are true! Boston is one of the best places in the country to be a provocative person, and female queer musicians are breaking barriers just by being themselves! That being said, as an all-female band, we’ve received our share of persecution, from casual condescension and pigeonholing to outward harassment. There’s still hard work to be done.
What has been your proudest moment as a member of a band or as a musician in general?
A couple years back, we won a contest to open for Bon Jovi at Ford Field Stadium in Detroit, and that experience was one of the proudest and most motivating opportunities we’ve had!
What advice would you give to a woman thinking about starting a band or learning an instrument?
Do it! Don’t worry about being great, or even good. Just follow your inspiration. Don’t filter yourself too much – as women, especially queer women, we’re socialized to hold ourselves back every second of every day! Music and performance is about throwing off the status quo and disregarding anything that gets in the way of expressing your most powerful self.
Are there any other current or former bands or solo artists you would like to see featured by QWIMB?

Saturday, May 14, 2016 is one date to mark on the calendar. 'Flight of Fire' the award winning local Boston band is about to take the stage for Radio 92.9 FM Battle of the Bands hosted at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston.
Flight of Fire has been making the news with brilliant original Rock/Folk & Symphonic Rock tracks. Winning coveted awards sought after by local bands since the very beginning of their collaboration. Recently voted Limelight Magazines Band of the Year 2016, Hard Rock Rising Boston City Wide Champions 2015 and opening for Bon Jovi after beating fierce competition in 2013 during the "Fox Rocks Bon Jovi" contest.
Band members include: Dorian Maverick - Lead Vocals/Acoustic Guitar/Keyboards, Tanya (Venom) Dmuchowski - Guitar/vocals, Tia (Mayhem) Dmuchowski - Bass/vocals and Kat Dukeshire - Drums. Making 'Flight of Fire' an all female ensemble. Power vocals combined with thought provoking lyrics set many bands apart, add the intensity of live stage performance by 'the twins' guitars, the fun loving exchange of instruments during live performance and Kat Devonshire's passion on the drum kit cements Flight of Fire as utterly unique. "They are a band that thrives with live shows, putting on an over-the-top set the turns any smaller venue into an arena show."- National Rock Review, 2014 - AXS
1] Introduce us to the band. Endearing nicknames, embarrassing stories, and alternative facts are welcome.
Hi, we’re Flight of Fire. We are ridiculously happy (and a little terrified) to be in the Rumble. We like to call our singer, Maverick “Words McGee” because she’s the reigning champion of all the words. We call Tia Mayhem “One Take Tia” because she makes us all feel bad with her recording prowess. Tanya Venom is simply “The Sex of the Band”, and if you don’t know why, you’ll soon find out. Our drummer came complete with nickname attached: “Badass Cass”. Stories? Let’s see… one time we were in LA preparing to play for the Sunset Strip Half Marathon and we had to get up before the sun, which is not in our nature, and we left without Tanya’s Les Paul. Now we make checklists.
2] What makes for a compelling live performance?
It’s all about connection; the feedback loop of energy between the musicians and the audience. The show should take the listener through hell and back. We know we’re doing our job when we feel that intensity reflected back at us, and it’s the best feeling in the world.
3] What is the band’s pre-show ritual?
Maverick warms up and tries her best to avoid using up her voice on pre-show yelling over the PA. We stretch, check hair and makeup, do what has to be done to avoid having to pee onstage, and right before we go on, we do the Flight of Fire secret group handshake-like-ritual that defies description.
4] Who is your favorite past Rumble band(s)? Hint: there have been 37 Rumbles before you.
Okay, there’s too many amazing rumble bands to list them all, but here are a few of our favorites – Analog Heart, 21st Century Fugitives, The Knock Ups, The Devil’s Twins, The Static Dynamic, Petty Morals, Ruby Rose Fox…
5] Spread the good word about some of your favorite bands from New England.
We have a crush on Carissa Johnson, and our fraternal twin band, Fifth Freedom, is an amazing rock band from Maine and we have way too many freakish similarities with them. Check them out! Also, here’s some other amazing bands that will improve your quality of life: Blindspot, No Hugs, Unstraight, and all the bands we listed in #4.
6] What would you put in the Boston Rock Time Capsule?
If only we’d gotten our hands on this time capsule a little sooner, we could have shoved all of TT’s in there. Then we could have gigs in the capsule. Sweet.
7] Who would you cast to play you in the epic movie version of your band?
Kristen Stewart would play Tanya AND Tia. Cass would be played by Lea Michelle, and Maverick would be played by a total Hollywood nobody, and the groundbreaking rockumentary “Phoenix Rising: A Portrait of The Band That Changed Rock Forever” would be her big break.
8] Who is your spirit animal?
Phoebe the Phoenix, featured in our logos and album art, is our spirit animal/mascot. She’s been through a lot, but she never stops kicking ass. It’s her nature.
9] What do you want to say to the 23 other bands?
Let’s do this. Let’s all go up there, have the time of our lives and make some rock and roll history.
10] Lemmy, Prince, and Bowie walk into a bar. Then what happens?
They pull Keith Moon off of the bathroom floor, and then carpool to rehearsal. Their band is called “Rock Ain’t Dead” or RAD for short. - WZLX / CBS Boston

Influences: Highly influenced by classic rock artists such as Led Zeppelin, Journey, Rush, Heart and The Who, as well as modern rockers like Halestorm, Paramore, The Foo Fighters and Evanescence. Flight of Fire has varied inspiration contributing to their unique sound, rooted in time-tested rock with a fresh, modern flavor.
TrunkSpace: How would you describe your music?
Flight of Fire: When we’re asked what kind of music we play, we usually say that our primary sound is hard rock, and that we also experiment with elements of heavy metal and folk music. On each of our releases, along with the driving hard rock songs that are our core, we include a couple more acoustic songs and some heavier songs that are reminiscent of 80s metal with a modern writing style.
TrunkSpace: How would you respond to someone who said that “rock is dead?”
Flight of Fire: We agree that rock is struggling in many countries, and the US isn’t the easiest place to build a career on rock music, but rock will never die. It’s too much founded in the pure energy, soul and expression that goes into the best music, and although it’ll continue to look different throughout the ages, the spirit of rock is forever.
TrunkSpace: As far as the “mainstream” is concerned, the genre definitely seems like it has been on the decline, and yet, there seems to be more rock bands touring and pounding the pavement than ever before. Will rock ever have its day in the sun on a major, mass market scale again?
Flight of Fire: Agreed. Especially in America, it’s hard to garner the kind of mass interest in rock music that other genres enjoy right now. But we think that music serves the world and it usually moves in cycles. Hopefully we’ll be around for the next cycle of heavy mainstream music.
TrunkSpace: If the band blew up tomorrow and found yourselves spearheading a rock resurgence, would you be comfortable with that amount of exposure and attention?
Flight of Fire: Absolutely. We are nothing if not ambitious!
TrunkSpace: It seems like bands comprised of women, regardless of their genre, more often than not get labeled as “girl bands” as opposed to just “bands.” How does Flight of Fire want to be viewed?
Flight of Fire: You’re so right. We love being an all-female band because it’s a totally unique chemistry on stage and during the writing process, but we want to be judged for our music and our character, not for what some people might think of as a gimmick. We’re all best friends, that’s why we play together, not because we’re trying to put on a freak show. But if, along the way, we show the world that girls can shred with the best of them, that would be progress to be proud of.
TrunkSpace: Another thing we noticed about bands comprised of women is that club owners often try to book them on bills with other female fronted bands, even when the music itself doesn’t mix. Is this something that Flight of Fire has experienced?
Flight of Fire: Definitely. And that practice has been both a hindrance and a boost. Sometimes it puts us in a position to open for other prominent female fronted bands and gain more fans, and sometimes it’s just so contrived that it feels a little ridiculous.
TrunkSpace: Boston has a rich history of birthing musical greatness, but it has never had that “scene” exposure like cities like Seattle or Los Angeles or Detroit. How would you describe the Boston music scene in 2017?
Flight of Fire: The great thing about Boston is that there are so many opportunities for new bands starting out. It’s very easy to get gigs and there are so many bands to play with. On the other hand, those first few years of a band’s development are usually filled with shows playing to pretty small audiences, and it can be difficult to break into the larger shows because there aren’t as many mid size venues who are willing to book local support acts unless your following is substantial. On the other hand, although pay-to-play certainly exists here, you can avoid it much more easily than in a city like LA. The road might be longer if you start in Boston, but it seems like a more honest scene than the major music cities in the US.
TrunkSpace: Can you talk to us about your songwriting process? How do Flight of Fire songs come together?
Flight of Fire: We’re very lucky in Flight of Fire that we have three songwriters. Maverick, Tia and Tanya all write songs and have different songwriting styles. The three of us usually write individually and then, when the song is mostly complete, we bring it to the other three so that we can all add in our individual skills to flesh out the song and give it the Flight of Fire sound. Maverick may extend melodies and edit lyrics, Tanya and Tia work together on riffs, and solos and Tia might develop the song’s grooves.
TrunkSpace: Do you ever feel exposed or vulnerable releasing new music to the world, and if so, how do you prepare yourself for that in a world of instant social media feedback?
Flight of Fire: It’s always vulnerable to share new music with your listeners, but for us, that experience usually happens on stage… we tend to play songs out at shows and get a feel for the audience reaction and develop the song as much as we can before we record it, so by the time the song is available to the whole world, we usually have something we feel really confident about.
TrunkSpace: One of the great things about music is that it can often affect people in a way that those who wrote it never intended. Have you been approached by a fan who shared a story about how a Flight of Fire song got them through a difficult moment or time in their life?
Fight of Fire: Those moments are by far the most rewarding memories we have. Our latest release, “Path of the Phoenix,” has a lot of themes of trauma recovery and healing from abuse, and we’ve had fans share their stories about how some of the songs on the album have helped them feel less alone and more understood. Touching people’s lives and validating those who’ve experienced rough times is a very fulfilling experience for us, and since so many of our songs have these themes, we hope that we can continue to inspire our listeners! We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for the guidance and help we’d received from our own musical heroes, and the thought that we could come close to helping others as our heroes have done is quite humbling and very motivating.
TrunkSpace: Just as listening to music can be a powerful thing for people, creating it can also be therapeutic. What does writing and creating music mean to you?
Flight of Fire: For Maverick, writing music was her way to cope with an abusive childhood, so it was nothing less than life saving. But all of us at Flight of Fire feel passionately about their need to express themselves musically, in a form of honesty that they might not be able to do any other way! This is one of the many reasons why we have no plan B as a band… writing and performing our music is really the only path in life that can fulfill us and keep us sane!
TrunkSpace: What can fans expect from Flight of Fire in the second half of 2017 and beyond?
Flight of Fire: We are so excited for everything that’s coming up for Flight of Fire! We’re touring to promote our new album, “Path of the Phoenix,” and we’ll be putting out a lot more music videos over the coming months. We also have a couple brand new singles planned, and then, next summer, we have our hearts set on touring internationally in Europe and Japan as well as the US, before we get back into the studio to make a little sister for “Path of the Phoenix.” - TrunkSpace

FLIGHT OF FIRE
Path Of The Phoenix
Self-Released - 2016
http://www.flightoffire.com
When you have an all female rock band, it is both cliche and inevitable that you'd look to see if they meet the standard to be described as "badass rocker chicks". Well, it might be cliche, but the women of FLIGHT OF FIRE effortlessly live up to that standard. Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, the four piece have released an album that grabs you from the start and won't let go to the final notes.
Having caught FLIGHT OF FIRE live with no prior knowledge of their material, the fact that I enjoyed the songs so much in their live setting made me want to hear what the studio album sounded like.
Funded by a Kickstarter fundraiser, the self-released Path Of The Phoenix finds the band and their material fully fleshed out and the individual members musically tight. They do a great job of living up the description on their website that they "explore the musical textures of upbeat hard rock, emotional folk rock, and complex symphonic rock."The seven song concept album's storyline follows a woman named Arcana who seeks out the Daughters of Venus, a coven of women who have all survived their own traumas and worship the Phoenix. "It's the story of her journey and finding her own strength", according to the group's singer Maverick.
The album's booklet lays out each song as a chapter and the interior artwork features a tarot card motif with the accompanying lyrics for each track.
Tanya Venom on guitars helps fuel the band's fiery rocker persona (I really love her playing here), but her work on the acoustic guitar also greatly informs the "My Last Gamble" track as well. Sister Tia Mayhem's bass work gives the songs the thunderous foundation for the music to build upon as the songs come to life. They both provide the drums for "My Last Gamble" as well. Speaking of drums, five of the seven songs feature drum work from 2016 Hit Like A Girl champion Helen De La Rosa (though Kat Dukeshire is the group's new drummer and I can attest to just how fantastic she is concert).
The variety of the song styles make for a sublime blending of the individual tracks. There are some solid mid groove rockers, balls out uptempo rockers and one insanely beautiful ballad like track that really won me over.
"Ten Thousand Voices" blows out of the speakers almost unexpectedly, catching you by surprise. There's a pure rock sound that explodes into a musical cacophony deeper into the track. While the band is compared to HEART, EVANSECENCE and HALESTORM I found that on this particular track, vocalist Maverick is almost eerily similar in vocal tone and phrasing to CHASTAIN's Leather Leone, at least in certain parts of the performance. The lyric "Ten thousand voices but none of them my own" was a winner to me as well.
The acapella vocal opening to "Rockstar Life" gives way to an energetic rocking and anthemic vibe. "My Last Gamble" opens acoustically, but as the song progresses, things take a turn towards a big footstomping romp that reminds me of a swamp rocker type of tune. All four of the members are involved vocally in the song. Just a big earworm track to dig in to, you can check out the official video on KNAC.COM right HERE.
FLIGHT OF FIRE proceeds to put the hammer down on "One More Sip" and "Better Off Without You", with each song blindingly fast and intense with a bit of venom running through each track's veins. The former is one of the best tracks on the disc, while the latter shows the the fiery intensity of Maverick's vocal performance to a supreme degree. These two songs meld both the vocal and instrumental together seamlessly with all four members of the band attacking their performances in a rip-roaring take no prisoners style. Tanya Venom's guitar is furious here!
There's some powerful guitar work on the closing number "Daughters Of Venus" and the song becomes a huge event-like piece of music as the album and story come to a close. The use of a huge backing choir adds to the epic feel and nature of the song.
As for the ballad...well...anyone who has ever read anything I've written has probably figured out that I generally hate any kind of song that would fall under the heading of "ballad". Regardless of the lyrical subject matter, I've heard so many that are the "love" song of the album that it has become redundant and a little repugnant. But on the acoustic based "In Spite Of You", the rug itself was pulled out from under this long held opinion of mine as the lyrics alternate between a cataloguing of heartbreak and the eventual empowerment and comeback from said heartbreak. The vocals from Maverick are more restrained here. She is vocally smooth and sleek and the emotion she conveys with each successive lyrical line makes this song pure magic. It is a killer tune, period.
Yes, this is a debut album from an unsigned band, but FLIGHT OF FIRE amply demonstrates on Path Of The Phoenix that they've got what it takes to churn out high quality rock and roll with depth and feeling. Yes, these girls (women) can rock like nobody's business!
I really enjoyed the band in a live concert setting, but I'm very happy that the studio album served to confirm why I pretty much instantly liked what I was hearing. This is an album that I really connected with and I can only hope for more to come in the future as FLIGHT OF FIRE takes off.

Fight of Fire won Limelight Magazine and the Narrows Center for the Arts “Opening Act Contest” on Sept. 8th. (Submitted Photo)
Consisting of Dorian Maverick, Tanya Venom, Tia Mayhem, and Kat Dukeshire, Flight of Fire brought 110 percent to their performance at the “Opening Act Contest” which was hosted at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River Mass., on Sept. 8th. Every crazy thing they could think of doing on a stage, they did — and they did it extremely well.
Although there were many other talented acts, they were the clear winners of the contest before it was even announced. As a result, they will get to open for Limelight Magazine’s 10th Anniversary Bash with Lita Ford at the Narrows Center on Nov. 1, 2016. This show is almost sold out. Remaining tickets can be purchased HERE.
In typical rock ‘n roll clothes, Flight of Fire entered the stage. The lights were dim, but the four women on stage had twinkles in their eyes. Only they knew what’s in store and it was truly something to be excited about.
Without any warning, lead singer Maverick spontaneously combusted into an acapella/screamo intro to their first song, “Rockstar Life.” Within seconds, Venom (lead guitar), Mayhem (bass) and Dukeshire (drums) joined into the chaos. During their nearly fifteen minutes on stage, the band unleashed every last drop of angst and emotion boiling within them — resulting in the pure eruption of everything the audience expected them to be and more.
Flight of Fire took the audience through hell and back. There wasn’t one moment where I was bored, since they put their all into every note they played. The band played as one organism — feeling each beat from their feet to their fingertips. With ear to ear smiles, each band member showed their true passion and love for what they were doing.
With bright red hair and empowering confidence, Maverick rocked the stage with charisma and attitude. She showed both strength and vulnerability. After rocking out during their first song, the band surprised the audience by toning it down. They played one acoustic song where all four girls laid out their emotions and love for folk music.
Venom and Mayhem also rocked the stage with an undeniable connection to both the music and each other. This was the result of being identical twins. Rocking different instruments and hair colors, their special bond was still evident, especially when they suddenly dropped their instruments and jumped onto the drum set together. Holding hands, and each holding one drum stick, the twins played the last half of “My Last Gamble” playing twin drums. During this, Dukeshire left the kit and casually picked up the bass and Maverick picked up the guitar, as it’s totally normal for rock bands to completely switch instruments during a song.
Flight of Fire left The Narrows stage a pile of ashes, frankly, making it difficult for the band’s playing after them.
As a judge for the contest and also a newfound Flight of Fire fan myself, I was given the opportunity to sit down with Maverick and Mayhem to talk about the contest, their thoughts about their careers, and their plans for the future.
“That was amazing,” said Maverick about winning the contest. “There were some really good musicians there that night and it was an honor to be a part of it at all. Then winning was just totally amazing.”
Flight of Fire shocked their audience at The Narrows with their performance and are also known for many other excellent shows. Maverick talked about the twin drumming they performed.
“The twin drumming was actually my idea,” she said. “The twins do so many amazing things together all the time. They seem to read each other’s minds basically and in practices they do this crazy stuff and I’m like ‘wow, that could be something really cool on stage’.”
“So we thought of doing the twin drumming and it was so easy for them. It was just ridiculous,” she continued. “We decided to work it into ‘My Last Gamble’ and have Kat take the bass there and do the whole switch off which is really fun for people to watch. We always get a good response.”
Mayhem talked about playing with her twin Tanya and the special bond they have.
“I love it honestly, playing with my sister,” she said. “We have such a unique bond. Like, not everyone is close to their siblings, but Tanya and I have always been close. We grew up together, we did almost everything together. Pretty much everything we could do together, we did.”
Mayhem goes on to explain that while their bond is exceptional in their day-to-day lives, they have also managed to use this connection to their advantage on stage.
“We don’t have that intense competition, we just have like, we build each other up and we work together,” she said. “I play bass, she plays guitar, and so we’re assisting each other in that way and playing off each other. It’s really fun. And yeah, we have this kind of connection. I just feel like we always know what each other’s kind of thinking. You know, you can sense what they’re feeling and kind of assume if you feel one way, she feels that way too. We kind of use that vibe while making music.”
Although Flight of Fire is purely a rock band, they have been inspired by folk and many other types of music.
“Our variety’s really important to us. When I met the twins at Berklee, they came from a pure classic rock background, and, at the time, I was actually coming from a singer/songwriter kind of background. So when we started collaborating together, we got a lot of different sub-genres in there,” Maverick said.
Maverick talked about one genre that has especially inspired the band.
“As far as folk artists that inspire Flight of Fire and me, I’m hugely inspired by Paul Simon and Simon & Garfunkel,” she said. “Also, Zeppelin has been a huge inspiration because they have so many acoustic and folk songs and I think that is where ‘My Last Gamble’ came out of. [It] was the combination of those two things. It’s got some of the southern, foot stompin’ thing going on.”
With Flight of Fire excelling at a rock and rock, what’s next? Surprisingly enough, all members of the band, except for Dukeshire, went to Berklee College of Music. They studied classical music and enjoyed their studies due to their natural love for gaining knowledge.
“Me and the twins are all classically trained,” said Maverick. “I played violin, Tia played bass clarinet, and Tanya played flute.”
While those instruments and classical sounds were incorporated into some of their earlier songs, Flight of Fire is now purely rock.
Maverick also talked about their majors at Berklee.
“The twins both majored in film scoring, writing music for movies and songs, and digital media,” she said. “Then, I double majored in songwriting and composition, composition being classical composition. I think that’s what definitely influenced us.”
Although Maverick makes it clear that they use the knowledge they gained from Berklee, she doesn’t believe that you need to go to Berklee to become a successful rock musician. She explained how she and the twins decided to go to Berklee not necessarily because they wanted to be rock stars, but because they wanted to learn as much as they could about their number one passion in life: music.
“We all honestly love school. I don’t think many people who see us live would assume that we’re geeks, but we’re pretty much geeks,” Maverick admitted. “For us, it made sense because we’re all fascinated by every aspect of music on a technical scale, so we wanted to learn everything we could. But you certainly do not need to do that to play rock. We like to have a marriage of both worlds – the technical side and the pure passion side.”
Mayhem explained the band’s main message.
“The main message we want to send with our music is that no matter who you are, where you come from, or what you do, you can achieve whatever you want if you set your mind to it and you never give up,” she said.
Mayhem continued to say that they want to inspire people to, “do what they want to do in life, because that’s a good life.”
“If you’re doing what you want and you’re being who you what to be, then you’re not wasting time, you’re not wasting life. Even if you might not ever get there, just striving for that makes you feel more like yourself,” she said.
Flight of Fire’s favorite and so far biggest show they have every played was when they opened up for Bon Jovi at Ford Field Stadium in Detroit. Since then, they have become addicted to big stages. The band feels more comfortable the bigger the stage is because they can do so much more with their performances.
Maverick reminisced about the Bon Jovi football stadium stage.
“To hear our voices and instruments echoing off the back of the stadium…We love to run around and be crazy and do the exciting stuff that we do,” she said.
Flight of Fire plans to release their newest album titled Path of the Phoenix next weekend.
Flight of Fire will release "Path to the Phoenix" on Oct. 1, 2016.
Flight of Fire will release “Path to the Phoenix” on Oct. 1, 2016, with a CD release party at Zobra Music Hall in Lowell, Mass.
“It’s going to be released on October 1st and the release party is at Olympia’s Zorba Music Hall (located at 439 Market St.) in Lowell, Mass. We are having a reunion show of the amazing ‘80’s, all female band Lizzie Borden and the Axes are playing with us that night. Very, very cool.”
To purchase tickets to this show, click HERE.
“The album itself is a concept album. It tells the story of a woman who goes through tons of trials and horrible things, finds her own inner strength, and is re-born through the strength of that fire. It’s pretty cool,” said Maverick about Path of the Phoenix. “We have tons of concept art that we’re going to be releasing along with the album. Each song has a tarot card that was created by our amazing artist Lucas Seven.”
Produced by Liz Borden, the album will have seven tracks, two which have already been released: “Better Off Without You” and their newest single “My Last Gamble”.

Last up for the night was Flight of Fire, who wasted no time getting the crowd’s undivided attention. This vivacious foursome, coming out of Detroit and Boston, consists of Maverick (vocals and guitar), Tanya Dmuchowski (guitar), Tia Dmuchowski (bass), and Victoria Seagriff (drums). They became the Hard Rock Rising 2015 Boston City-Wide Champions this year.
The Flight of Fire performance this night was mind-blowing. Maverick flaunted her impressive vocal skill, belting beautiful and sultry melodies. Seagriff is a whirlwind of unapologetic energy behind the drum kit. The Dmuchowski Twins are a force to be reckoned with, Tanya’s vicious electrifying guitar leads and Tia’s blaring riffs on bass cementing the foursome’s sound. Their songs are finely crafted to be crowd pleasers, getting people who may not even know them up to the stage. - National Rock Review
Imagine being alone on a dark, deserted street in the middle of the night, when suddenly, you hear a rustle in the bushes. A stranger pounces upon you, overpowering you and forcing you to the ground.
This is how many people imagine sexual assault. However, the reality of sexual assault is far more subtle and manipulative. That is what Berklee band Flight of Fire is addressing with their Stolen Voices Project.
“When I was fifteen, I had my first experience of being massively pressured by my then-boyfriend to be sexual,” said the band’s frontwoman Dorian Maverick, who is the main creative force behind the project.
Stolen Voices is a multimedia project that gathered together 56 performers, both male and female, from five different Boston schools. Its objective is to spread awareness about acquaintance rape; a sexual assault that legally fits the definition of rape, yet does not fit the typical cliché that society has constructed (see the above scenario). This causes it to fall into a grey area, and thus be dismissed by the perpetrator, the victim, and society.
Maverick was inspired to bring this issue to light after her experiences with acquaintance rape, and the experiences of people close to her as well.
“Like a lot of my more social change oriented songs, it first came out as something I just needed to write for myself. I had just found out that a friend of mine had been raped, and I was so broken hearted by hearing this from her, and really pissed off, too.”
But, writing the song was not without its challenges.
“…this was really difficult to put together because of the subject matter. How do I talk about something like this that is so charged and so sensitive and so upsetting in a way that you can tolerate listening to, and possibly get something out of?”
After spending six months drafting the song and struggling to get it just right, Maverick began to realize that it could be something more than just another track on the album. After getting the concept together, she began gathering collaborators through word of mouth.
“I just had to gather up the courage and go straight up to friends, acquaintances, and classmates and try to explain the concept and ask if they wanted to be involved,” she said. “I had to approach them very carefully and make sure they understood the project before getting them to contribute, because I didn’t want people to come in who didn’t fully support the cause.”
Another six months was spent coordinating and putting the project itself together. After having to take a break for touring, Maverick and the Flight of Fire girls managed to complete the project at the very end of winter break, and released it on February 22nd. Though progress has been going well, it has yet to achieved what Maverick had hoped it would.
“It’s got about 800 views right now, which is pretty good, but it’s slowing down massively and honestly I was expecting there to be a lot more sharing and viral-ness. I have really big dreams for this project so I’m really trying to get it out there where everyone can see it.”
Maverick and the band’s next goals are to try and get the project shared on Upworthy, and to attract the attention of Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records label, who has signed other primarily female rock acts in the past. She says that her ultimate goal with the project is to promote awareness, and possibly even prevent rape.
On the subject of another social awareness project in future, Maverick already had something in the works.
“The song is called ‘I’m Lost Without You,’ and I wrote it half for my girlfriend and half about this gay couple that I read about in a book. We’ve been talking about making a music video for it, and I thought it could be cool to hire a couple of actors to be a gay couple for it,” she said. “We’re in a huge time of change for marriage equality, and it’s a great time to be contributing to the movement.”

A few weeks back, I wrote a piece about the Stolen Voices Project, an important new campaign to raise awareness about sexual assault started by the Berklee rock band Flight of Fire. Not only do they write great, socially conscious music, but they rock pretty hard as well. When I heard that they were playing at the Music Industry Showcase at Brighton Music Hall on April 26th, I knew I had to make it out. I have seen only a small handful of good rock shows since I arrived in Boston, and these ladies don’t disappoint.
The medium sized, almost dingy club was the perfect setting for the band. Their stage show is loud, boisterous, and fun, and the energy they put out on stage has no problem filling a larger venue. Stage presence aside, Flight of Fire also demonstrates the kind of high level of musicianship you would expect from a Berklee trained band. They made a point to showcase every member of the group multiple times throughout their set, and they topped their tight stage chemistry with killer harmonies (a factor which can take a rock band from “good” to “great,” in my opinion). They showed their roots with no shame, with a super heavy, ’70s style cover of Stepenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild,” as well as some Jimmy Page-esk violin bow action of the guitar. They’re obviously a band that lives for the live shows, and one of few local rock bands I’ve seen that still subscribes to the kind of over-the-top stage show that only works when done with absolute confidence.
Of course, being that this was supposed to be an industry showcase, there were a few other stand-out acts that night. Brooklyn based singer-songwriter Meghann Wright brought a great band (affectionately dubbed “The Wrongs) to accompany her acoustic folk tunes. It was the rhythm section that really sold the set for me; they played off each other constantly and added a lot of flair to what might otherwise be fairly bland arrangements. They looked like they were having more fun than anybody else up there on stage, which really added a lot to the group’s energy.
I also enjoyed seeing House Guest, a band made up of Boston University students. They played a set of original, upbeat indie rock tunes. Their music is well constructed and interesting, though I found the sound to be a little out of place amongst the heavier bands playing before and after them. I enjoyed the shared lead vocals between their guitarist and bassist, though intonation was a major issue almost every time they sang a passage together. I wouldn’t mind catching them again, but perhaps in a different setting and with other indie rock bands.
The bands Leaving Eden, 3 Parts Dead, and Tallboys also played that night. Though they were all obviously well rehearsed and competent musicians, I can’t say I enjoyed any of their music. East of Eden is a pretty stereotypical sounding heavy metal group, and while the co-ed lead vocals could be cool, neither of the singers really sounded great live. 3 Parts Dead are a fast paced hard rock group who sounded straight out of the 80’s, and looked like they could have been active around that time as well. Frontman Mike Patton was probably a pretty good rock singer back in the day, but really struggled to hit a lot of the notes he was shooting for throughout their set, and it was a overall a little tough to watch. Tallboys are a fairly sterile and bland sounding rock group, though their set was tight. They are all good players, and they really take advantage of their multi-instrumentalist members, leading to a pretty interesting stage show. Overall, their music just didn’t really do anything special for me, and I felt that the instrument swapping was more of a gimmick than something that really contributed a lot to the sound of the group.
Though it was a long night with a lot of fairly run-of-the-mill rock bands, the few stand out artists really made the whole showcase worth it to me. My preference for the music aside, all of these bands were tight and well rehearsed, and certainly played great sets as far as their fans would be concerned.

Examiner: How did you girls come together?
Maverick: "We all attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, and we met during our adventures there. Tia and Tanya met Maverick at a mutual friend’s birthday party in their first semester at Berklee, when Maverick was belting a Boston song on the T and drawing a lot of attention to herself, as usual! Tanya asked her if she wanted to put a band together, and Maverick was elated! The twins and Maverick met Shaina at a concert lead by another mutual friend, and once we saw Shaina kicking the shit out of those drums and belting backing vocals with such raw power, we knew we had to have her in Flight of Fire. We had our first tour together last summer, and the rest is history!"
Examiner: What or who inspired you to get into the music business?
Maverick: "It’s safe to say that none of us can imagine a life without music. We all started our musical journeys in school band/orchestra, and, as we grew older, we adapted our classical training into playing our rock instruments, so that we could be a part of the styles and the music we loved. Shaina has known that she was meant to be a drummer since she was a little kid, banging on tables with her silverware. The twins have been writing songs and making music together all their lives (their home videos are adorable). Maverick began songwriting as a way to help her through a difficult childhood, and singing has always been an invaluable form of self-expression. For each of us, there was really no other option than to devote our lives to music."
Examiner: Who are your greatest influences?
Maverick: "Shaina’s been hugely influenced by Keith Moon and Ringo Starr. Tia and Tanya are also largely inspired by classic rock greats; Tanya takes a lot from Jimmy Page and Neal Schon, and Tia’s muses include Geddy Lee and John Entwistle. The songs of Paul Simon have always been paramount to Maverick, and vocally, Maverick aspires to channel the power of Ann Wilson, Freddie Mercury and Brad Delp.
As a band, we are attempting to stand on the shoulders of women who have made rock and roll history, and hopefully build on the paths they have forged. The Quatro sisters, Janis Joplin, The Wilson sisters and Joan Jett have all made their mark on the world and on us, and our dream is to continue to work they started, furthering women in music and in society.
Examiner: You write your own music? Do you write the lyrics first or do you play it on your instruments first?
Maverick: "All four of us are songwriters, and the usual process is for each of us to work on our own songs, and if we feel that we’ve written something that would be a good fit for Flight of Fire, we present it to the other three. At that point, we all get the opportunity to help with the editing and arrangement process, making lyrical and musical suggestions (although the original creator of the song always gets the final say on any changes), and then we play it together. That’s when the magic starts happening – we all get to know the song, and get inspiration for how we can help the song become the best and the most powerful that it can be. Sometimes we even make changes in the studio while we’re recording – there’s something inspiring about recording that can make the energy of a song really come to life."
Examiner:
Upcoming dates?
MAVERICK: "We’re really excited about being a featured artist in the North-East Music Festival, coming up August 21st – 24th, on Staten Island. We’re playing on the 22nd at 7pm, and the line up for the festival is thrilling! The festival is benefiting children with special needs, and we’re honored to be a part of it. Then, in October, we will be playing at the Sirens of Metal Festival at the Detroit Pub in Michigan. The festival is October 3rd and 4th, and we’re performing on Friday, the 3rd, along with some amazing national bands – all female-fronted. We have a couple other tours in the works that are currently being booked – keep updated on our website for more details as they come in!" - Examiner.com
popVLTR: You've been making moves in Boston, how'd you get into music? Flight of Fire: Well, It started pretty young for all of us – we’ve all had classical training – the twins, Tia and Tanya, started on bass clarinet and flute, respectively. In the symphonic and orchestral setting, Shaina played percussion and Maverick played violin as well as being a chorister – yeah, we’re all band geeks at heart. Then, as we developed more, we discovered our passion for rock; so we learned the instruments we needed to play the music we loved, and forced our friends to make garage bands with us - you know how it is. We all met up at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the rest is history.
popVLTR: Congrats on releasing 'Shatter the Sky', who are some of your influences? FOF: We love classic rock. That’s such an important musical foundation for Flight of Fire – we all wish we could have lived in the days of Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Beatles, and have witnessed Rush, Journey, Heart and Joan Jett back when their music was on the top of the charts. On top of that foundation, there’s a wide range of music we love, from 60s folk music to modern symphonic metal, and our studies at Berklee have focused on film music and orchestral composition, so we like to think that that brings unique sounds to the music we create.
popVLTR: What are some of your proudest moments in music? FOF: Hands down, the first thing we all just thought of was the day we were lucky enough to open for Bon Jovi last summer! Fox Detroit held a contest, and once we made it into the finals, our fans, friends and families really made that dream come true – we owe them so much. Performing at Ford Field in front of thousands of people was the most incredible experience – and it solidified our determination to share our music with the world. It’s also been awesome being an all-female band - once we found Shaina, Flight of Fire finally felt complete. All of us can attest to the fact that there’s something very powerful about rocking with three other passionate, determined women, and we’ve been told it’s quite an experience to witness that chemistry from the outside, as well.
popVLTR: What cool stuff is on the horizon for Flight of Fire? FOF: We have a whole lot in the works right now – we’re currently booking a kick ass tour for next summer, and it’s looking fabulous. We are also about to release a new music video - it’s dirty, heavy and smokin’ hot - and we’re really excited about it. We’re always writing and learning new songs for our next album, and we’re also involved in a social change project directed by our lead vocalist, Maverick. It’s called the Stolen Voices project, and it’s an awareness and healing project about acquaintance rape, involving over 50 performers from Boston schools. Our greatest goal is to make a positive change in the world through the power of our music, so hopefully this is the start of that journey. - PopVulture

English Lyrics
The band, Flight of Fire, following their first album, Ascended from Ashes (2011), released their sophomore album, Shatter the Sky, in August 2013. The album is interesting in that it takes the listener on a journey that is both interesting and pleasant. With a mixture of soft rock, blues, some Irish influence, ballads, and a little classic rock, this band invites one to go on that journey with them. The musicianship of the group is well established and the fact that they are trained musicians comes out in the album. Even though there are only two years between the release of the two albums, Shatter the Sky, shows the band maturing. The vocals, besides showing great expression and emotion, give the listener a feel at times of being at a poetry reading. The instruments show more variety and expression that comes from maturity. Make no mistake, at times, the sound is raw, but the rough edges have been smoothed.
The beginning of Flight of Fire is quite interesting. This is information is also available on the band’s website with more detail for those interested. I will give a shorter overview. The band started with two young ladies from Detroit, twins actually, Tia and Tanya Dmuchowski, who traveled east to Berklee School of Music in Boston in 2009. They had been playing the guitar and bass guitar from age 13 and studied the techniques of various classical rock great guitarists. Shortly thereafter, in the subway, they would meet the future vocalist, Dorian Maverick, known as Maverick, who added her strong voice and songwriting skills. Another friend of “the twins,” Sheik, added his talents on the drums. After playing gigs around Boston and Detroit, the group recorded Ascended from Ashes at Sheik’s home studio on Martha’s Vineyard. After releasing their first music video, playing additional gigs, the next step became their second album, Shatter the Sky. Shortly thereafter, Shaina Mikee Keiths, a drummer co-sponsored by Zildjian, joined, making it an all-female band. They have completed a tour promoting the album.
To quote the band in their promo material, “The members of Flight of Fire feel passionate about influencing the music industry away from music that demeans women and other persecuted groups and towards honest, inspiring music that encourages integrity and acceptance.” I can appreciate this view because music should be inspiring on some level. I believe that this album will play well for women, especially younger women, as it addresses a serious issue that is quite prevalent today. That issue is the deprecation of women in relationships, or the idea of how one can realize that a relationship is not good, but at the same time, feeling powerless to change it. The group strongly supports the empowerment of women and that issue does need addressed considering the climate on some college campuses today.
In addition the band shows a lot of energy in their music, especially in the twelve tracks on this album. This is also apparent in their live performances and YouTube videos. It does not hurt that they are all multi-instrumentalist. Tia, in addition to the bass, also plays the bass clarinet and sings backup vocals. Tanya, besides being talented on the guitar, plays a mean flute and also backup vocals. Maverick, lead vocals, plays keys, fiddle, and backup guitar. Shaina brings experience on the drums and backup vocals. As seen, this group is multi-talented in addition to their music education at Berklee School of Music.
“Out of Silence,” a song with clear multiple parts to it, is the first track. After a nice, short drum intro, we have a traditional rock guitar opening. In comes a short spoken part and then the singing begins. It is obvious that this song is about a man’s hold over a woman, and her expressing her helplessness. Maverick shows a range of emotions in her voice. This includes anger, disgust, and questioning. Underneath the voice expressing the anger and the disgust we have the driving rock drums, bass and power chords. Midway through there is a nice guitar solo that is not overpowering but complements the expression of the vocal part. The song ends with a spoken, “gone.” The chorus says it all concerning this song:
Fire! Fire! Fueling rage
Sadness, heartbreak from those days
It took so long for me to see
That you were tainting me
Criticism never ceased
Terrorism haunting me
It took so long for me to see
That you were ruining me
A nice bluesy song, “Diary of a Broken Heart,” gives us another side of Maverick’s vocal skills, and in addition, a unique orchestration. Starting with a mournful blues riff on the guitar, a walking bass plays under Maverick’s emotional voice. Intermixed with this is a countermelody played by the bass clarinet and keeping it all together is the steady drum beat. Midway through, Maverick vocals lead the band through a myriad of chord changes with her soulful voice, which then leads to a bluish rock guitar solo. This progresses to an arpeggiated guitar chord pattern under the vocal part. The song ends with a melody-countermelody between Maverick and Tanya. The chorus gives us the sense of the song’s emotional content:
No, I’m not okay; I’m begging you to stay
Why did you go? You walked out the door
How can we move on when this feels so wrong?
All I want is you to hold me like you used to do
But for now I’ll bleed my thoughts into this diary of a broken heart
“Always” is a folk ballad and the instrumental parts treat this song as such, with acoustic guitar opening the song. Even when the drums and other instruments enter, they are very subdued allowing the vocal part to be prominent. The guitar plays a rock like rhythm, it is still soft. Midway through the song, there is a very lovely duet. Then song lets loose, with a guitar solo and bass accompaniment, before settling back in to the acoustic setting. The unique feature of this song is the chorus that consists of “Ah” being sung in several different lyrical manners.
An Irish influence is very strong, with the addition of the fiddle part, which is prominent at the beginning of “I’m Lost Without You.” This song is best described as an Irish Ballad with the sorrowful melody played on the fiddle. While the voice is singing the melody, we are treated to a pizzicato countermelody played on the fiddle, all over the strumming guitar and light rhythm section. Most of the song becomes a melody, countermelody between the voice and fiddle. It continues to build to a climatic pause, and then the instruments and voice let the music flow and shine. The opening verse and chorus are worth mentioning and they are:
Do you remember the night my hand stole into yours?
It sticks in my memory like clay when the music won’t come to me.
The chorus:
I’m lost without you
I’m lost without my,
Lost without my
Lost without you
There are three other songs worth noting before I mention my favorite song. They are “Noah,” “Treating You Like He Deserved,” and “The Tapestry Suite.” I wanted to mention “Noah” because there is a very lovely countermelody played throughout the song on the flute by Tanya. It doesn’t overpower but complements Maverick’s voice. The piano is also a key instrument in this song. “Treating You Like He Deserved,” is song of both sorrow and hope. The vocalist tells a person about how they mistreated them because of how they were treated. The hope is that they realized it, and how they want to change. This comes out in the chorus:
Treating you like he deserved
Saying things to you that he should have heard
And a thousand times in a thousand slurs
I have punished you for his cruel words
But you are the light of a better life,
So I promise to be the girl that you deserve
While the song is a ballad, there is a very nice, almost lyrical duet, between the voice and the bass. In this song, the bass is treated as another voice, and it doesn’t disappoint. It is like a dance between them until the end when the guitar takes over. Overall, it is nice song with a message. What makes “The Tapestry Suite” interesting is that it completely instrumental. Here they create a tapestry of all the songs, weaving the melodies in and out while using many instruments, especially the ones that they don’t normally play. This allows the listener to re-live the songs from the album in a nicely, crafted way. The style also changes throughout the tapestry and it makes for a pleasant listening experience.
My favorite song on the album is “Against All Odds,” sort of a rock anthem. What causes me to like this song, among all the others, is that this song is a story of the band. When this song and album were made, Sheik was the drummer and so the first verse pertains to him. The next verse describes Maverick and the third verse deals with “the twins.” The final verse includes the whole band and the whole message is that they went “against all odds.” Starting out with heavy power guitar chords, the bass plays a high countermelody, with the drum underneath. At the end of each verse, there is a vocal chorus of “ahs.” The verse pertaining to Maverick has a distorted guitar part. After the chorus we are treated to a drum solo, a bass solo, and a guitar lead in and solo before the next verse. For “the twin’s” verse, we have the traditional rock beat under the vocals. At the end there is a countermelody played by the guitar. For the final verse, the rock beat continues but in spots, it becomes very choppy, almost staccato, before the melody is layered in the guitar and bass and slowly fading out. The verse pertaining to the group is:
We can’t change our past, but we can make history
We don’t know what’s next, but we can forge the future
Leave what once was, Live what is now,
If there is a dream worth fighting for,
Take the risk and fight
Against all odds
Shatter the Sky is a pretty good rock album and for those looking to add to their library, this album is a good choice. This second album, by Flight of Fire, has a diversity of music genres and displays the maturity of band members, both songwriting and performance. Not only is there the typical rock sound, but it includes some Blues, Folk, and ballads. The music promotes the band’s beliefs concerning the empowerment of women over the degradation of women that is so prevalent in the music industry. This is good in that hopefully it will help and inspire the younger generation. The fact that they all are graduates of the Berklee School of Music in Boston is apparent and they are very proficient playing their instruments and music. They completed a successful tour promoting this album and it will be interesting to see what their future will entail. I am looking forward to seeing their future as they go “Against all Odds.” - Sonic Cathedral
The Sirens of Metal is a two-day music festival featuring all female fronted bands.
A last minute addition to the show, Reign, kicked off the Sirens of Metal music festival. They are a progressive rock band from Clarkston, MI, influenced by Dream Theater, Rush, Journey, Queensryche, and Circus Maximus. These guys captured the audience’s attention with heavy riffs mixed with soaring vocals and harmonies, their chemistry emanating into the crowd. Reign has opened for bands such as Queensryche and Stryper, and has toured with bands like King James. They were in the studio in late June 2014 to record their second album, which is expected to be a big change from their debut album, The Greatest Story Ever Told, released through TMG Records in 2012.
A punk-metal band from Pittsburg, PA, The Motorpsychos, had the crowd up and amped by sound check. The Motorpsychos blend aggressive punk, metal riffs, and screaming choruses into a supersonic, heavy hitting, powerful set. They have played with Disturbed, Kittie, Nashville Pussy, Ten Years, Ill Nino, Harlow, the Shocker, Broadzilla, Jucifer, Bottom, and other heavy bands. They have released four albums and have won several regional and national band competitions, including Best Metal Band and Best Metal Album from The Pittsburgh Rock Music Awards, in both 2012 and 2013. The Motorpsychos have appeared on Vans Warped Tour, X-Fest, and the Zippo Hot Tour.
One of the most anticipated bands of the night was Maxine, a metal band from Detroit, founded by Maxine Petrucci. No stranger to the metal scene, Petrucci has a long musical history dating back to 1984 with the band Madam X, which she formed with her sister, Roxy Petrucci (who went on to play drums for Vixen). Former Skid Row frontman, Sebastian Bach, would later join the group.
Petrucci has commonly been compared to Yngwie Malmsteen. Many guitarists, both male and female are inspired by her skills. But Petrucci isn’t the only living legend in this band. With Maxine’s current lineup of Petrucci, Rachel May (of Broadzilla) on guitar, Pat DeLeon and Bryan Paxton (both of Imminent Sonic Destruction) on drum and bass, this band has become a juggernaut in the metal scene. Rachel May did a lot of the vocal work for the night. Her tribute to Dio had everyone raising their metal horns.
Their third heavy, melodic metal album, Back to the Garden was released in 2013 and is available on Amazon.
The last band of the night was Flight of Fire. The all-female rock band from Detroit, was founded by “The Twins,” Tanya and Tia Dmuchowski, in 2009. Their stage show is loud, wild, and exciting. They are a band that thrives with live shows, putting on an over the top set that turns any smaller venue into an arena show. As a high-octane band full of energy, this band gave 100% the entire night, creating a great atmosphere for the crowd.
The band has a contest going on, Flight of Fire’s Rock In Vegas Sweepstakes. The Sweepstakes Grand Prize includes: international airfare for two to Las Vegas, lasting two nights at the MGM Grand, $1,000 of spending money, VIP Tickets to see the band play in Vegas, and an appearance in their new music video. You can enter the sweepstakes by ordering an exclusive, limited edition EP + Shirt Package on their website. You may order as many packages as you want to increase your chances of winning!
They hope to follow in the footsteps of their idols – Joan Jett, Janis Joplin, Ann and Nancy Wilson, and Stevie Nicks, making their own impact, inspiring girls not only to take up instruments and rock, but to live more inspired and fearless.
With a strong lead vocalist belting powerful melodies, a drummer with fantastic energy, the rhythm being the driving force, and twin sisters providing thrilling guitar leads and heavy bass jams, Flight of Fire is a force to be reckoned with.
There are rumors that there will be another Sirens festival happening in mid winter. Nothing is for sure yet but a rock fan can only hope. - National Rock Review

LITA FORD In Fall River, MA
By Jay Roberts, Massachusetts Contributor

At The Narrows Center For The Arts, November 1st, 2016
- advertisement -
The question is: Can an "intimate" club show approach the electricity and excitement level of a big arena show? For those in attendance at the sold out 280 seat Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River, MA LITA FORD show, the answer is an unquestionable "YES!"
It's always nice when a local band gets to open for an established "name" performer but that doesn't always translate into said opening band really striking a chord with the audience. However this was not the case on this night. After winning Limelight Magazine's (the publisher, JKB Entertainment Group was the show's promoter) Opening Act contest, the Boston-based band FLIGHT OF FIRE opened up the show with a powerfully dynamic set that showcased the all-female band to a vastly appreciative audience.
Taking the stage in support of their month old album Path Of The Phoenix, the band boldly started out with leather-lunged vocalist Maverick singing the opening intro to "Rockstar Life" acapella before the rest of the band joined in with a lively and enlivening set of straight forward hard rock dosed with, as their website states, "emotional folk rock and complex symphonic rock".
There's that old stand by phrase that talks about "these girls can rock" that definitely fits FLIGHT OF FIRE. Tanya Venom lit up the crowd with her work on the six string while Tia Mayhem spent the show providing thundering bass runs. Drummer Kat Dukeshire is a powerhouse sparkplug behind the kit. As for Maverick, her voice soared and cajoled the crowd throughout the band's 30 minute set. At one point, she was displaying so much unrestrained power, I feared for the PA system. The band, it seems, also values versatility as evidenced when they switched things up on the song "My Last Gamble". They all had some time on the mic, while both Tia and Tanya ended up playing the drums together, Maverick handled some of the guitar work and Kat found herself on the bass. For my money (so to speak), the best track on the night had to be the oustanding "Ten Thousand Voices", the lead track on their album. You can check out that performance HERE!
The band covered the LED ZEPPELIN song "The Ocean" and with the exception of one musical run where I thought there was a bit too much heaviness for the actual song, they did a fabulous job.
A few shoutouts to LITA FORD culminated with a dedication of the song "She's A Badass" to Lita and all the other women rockers who paved the way. FLIGHT OF FIRE closed out their set with "Better Off Without You" and received a rousing and well deserved standing ovation from the crowd.
After their set, I purchased their album and spent a quick minute speaking to the band and getting a photo with them which you can see on the KNAC.COM Twitter Page.
I am far from being plugged into the local rock scene so my unfamiliarity with the band prior to witnessing their winning set is a bit shameful to me. But FLIGHT OF FIRE spent their time on stage providing hard edged and high quality rock and roll and it was an immense pleasure for me "discover" them at long last.

As for LITA FORD's show, all I can say is WOW! She had what I thought was a perfect song to lead into her hitting the stage with ACCEPT's "Balls To The Wall", but instead she let the "Intro" performance piece from her latest CD, Time Capsule, be the last thing you hear before she and her band kicked off the set. This is my only comment of negativity because I rather unfortunately hated that piece when I heard it on the album. But other than that, Lita's show was simply superb.
Hitting the stage decked out in studded denim and leather with her trademark B.C. Rich Warlock guitar, Ford opened with a smoking rendition of "Gotta Let Go" and proceeded to touch upon almost every aspect of her career (surprisingly, the actual songs from the Time Capsule album didn't make the set list) with both THE RUNAWAYS and her solo albums.
Fueled by her band, Lita was magic all night long. She worked not only every musical option in her repertoire but was effortlessly engaging in her words from the stage. She mentioned how "kick ass" she found FLIGHT OF FIRE to be. Meanwhile, in a chuckling but complementary fashion, she commented that the intimate space of the Narrows made her feel like she was in someone's living room.
I was kind of blown away with how great the band sounded live. The acoustics in the venue were excellent and Ford's band took full advantage of that fact. Guitarist Patrick Kennison played like an 80's guitar hero and provided stellar backing vocals. With Lita just on vocals for "What Do You Know About Love", he handled all the guitar work and fiery is just one term that could be applied.
How good is her band? Besides Kennison, bassist Marty O'Brien is rock solid in his performance. As for drummer Bobby Rock, he did something that I didn't think was possible anymore. He had a drum solo (in the middle of "Can't Catch Me") that I found quite entertaining. That's something big for me because I normally loathe drum solos.
But unsurprisingly, everything comes back to LITA FORD. This was the first time I had gotten to see her live in concert and I was not disappointed in the least. Her stand out vocal performance was evidenced by the fact she sounded as good as anything I've heard on her records. The guitar playing was slick and immense. The trading of solos with Kennison on "Back To The Cave" was a particularly noteworthy example.
Given how much I loved her Living Like A Runaway CD, I was glad to see that album represented by three songs in the set list including her cover of Elton John's "The Bitch Is Back". It is a song that continues to sound as if it was tailor-made for her to perform.
And in case you have found yourself forgetting just how many great songs Ford has had in her career, other stand out performances were "Falling In And Out Love" and an amazingly perfect "Playin' With Fire", which you can check out HERE!
After playing two RUNAWAYS tracks ("Cherry Bomb" and "Black Leather"), Ford brought the show to an end with her two biggest hits. There was a edgy rawness to the performance of "Close My Eyes Forever" that gave a new life to the song and an even greater appreciation of the song from me. Patrick Kennison had the task of filling in for Ozzy Osbourne's vocals on the song and call me crazy, but I liked the energy and rough edge he brought to the performance. As for "Kiss Me Deadly", it pretty much brought the house down as Lita and company bid the audience good night. SEE IT HERE!
I don't know what I might've been expecting when finally getting the chance to see LITA FORD live, but whatever expectations I had, she not only met them but exceeded them. She captured my attention in the 80's because let's face it, I was a teenager enthralled with her. But as an ever more appreciative adult music fan, on this night at the Narrows Center, she captured my attention by remaining a gifted performer who connects with her audience by providing great molten hot songs and a effervescent live stage performance that leaves you "Hungry" for more!

Flight of Fire and Cherie Currie ignite their own ‘Cherry Bomb’
It was 'girls to the front' Saturday night at ONCE Ballroom in Somerville
By Victoria Wasylakon December 3, 2018
Sponsored by Studio 52. A community artist space located in the heart of Allston, and is proud to support the Boston music scene and local artist community.
If you’re gonna release a song called “She’s A Badass”, then bringing a female rock veteran like Cherie Currie on board seems essential. This past Saturday (December 1), Flight of Fire did one better — at their single release show at ONCE Somerville, they not only brought the former Runaway onstage, but they called for “girls to the front” and got backup from Boston bands The Knock Ups, blindspot, and Lizzie Borden and The Axes for a rendition of “Cherry Bomb.”
“You guys, please scream ‘Cherry Bomb’ when it’s time,” Currie said to the crowd before turning to the ladies onstage and adding, “Let’s give it to ‘em.”
Flight of Fire and Currie also filmed a video for their new single at the ONCE show, so while we wait for that finished product to arrive eventually, enjoy fan-filmed video shot by Colin St. John of the ladies’ “Cherry Bomb” blast below. - Vanyaland
This interview was conducted by Joe Bennett of TalentRaters and the members of Flight of Fire.
Flight of Fire is a cutting edge all female rock band based out of Boston that was originally formed at the Berklee College of Music in 2009 and have been playing together for 7 years. The names and roles of these sexy rocker femes are as follows:
Maverick – Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar
Tanya Venom – Lead Guitar and Backup Vocals
Tia Mayhem – Bass and Backup Vocals
Kat – Drums and backup vocals
Flight of Fire has three albums now, two of which were self-recorded and self-produced in their basement called Ascended from Ashes and Shatter the Sky. Their third album, Path of the Phoenix, in complete contrast to their first two, was professionally recorded, mixed, mastered, and produced by the legendary Liz Borden.
When asked, “What is your favorite album?” Flight of Fire replied “Path of the Phoenix is undoubtedly our favorite!” The girls feel that in this album they have honed their skills the most and developed their sound into something they can all be proud of; something that represents what they stand for and gives their listeners and idea of the fierce energy they all display on stage. They also mentioned that a large part of the success of the Path of The Phoenix recording was due to having a very talented production team.
Maverick, Tanya and Tia (identical twins), are the original members of the band and have played with several drummers now including their most recent, Kat, who’s timing and playing ability are impeccable. When asked, “What is your favorite concert venue and location to play at?” Flight of Fire replied as follows:
Maverick –DSR Hatch Shell, Boston, MA
Tanya – Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, MA
Tia – Hard Rock Café, Boston, MA
Kat – Thunder Road, Somerville MA
Maverick and the twins found each other at the Berklee College of Music in 2009 and found Kat through a mutual friend in the music scene and in late 2015 she became a permanent member of the band.
Each of the girls was asked, “What inspires you to make music?” Their response was:
Maverick – “For me, it’s a form of self-expression that I need to keep myself sane! If I didn’t get my music our, it would burn me to embers. You could call performing a survival technique for me.
Tanya – “This crazy dream we are chasing comes along with so many internal and external struggles that require a serious amount of courage, willpower, and strength to overcome. It’s those trials and what it takes to conquer them that most often inspire me to write.”
Tia – “The idea that when I write music for myself, to express and help myself through life, I am also helping others who have been where I have who feel how I feel, is something truly amazing.”
Kat – “Being a musician can be such a beautiful thing, you have the ability to not only make others happy, but yourself as well, obviously. That is exactly what I aim for, it just feels like the only natural way to release tension, and satisfy and express myself.”
Flight of Fire voiced that the number one thing they like most about being professional musicians is that their number one goal is spending their lives making music. Making music for the band is freeing and empowering allowing them to turn their focus on the one thing that makes them feel most genuine and there is nothing else they can imagine doing than following their musical dreams.
As far as the songwriting goes, Maverick and the twins each write songs individually and then bring them to the band for collaboration. Over the years, these girls have developed harmonious techniques of contributing their own specialties to everyone’s songs, and that’s the equation or formula that creates the Flight of Fire sound.
After nearly seven years in the Boston music scene, Flight of Fire has really come to love the certain flavor of New England’s music culture. The girls love playing in New York and enjoy all of their domestic tours, but there is nothing quite as special as playing in their hometown of Boston.
Now that their new first professional album has been released, Flight of Fire has great ambitions to make sure that as many ears and hearts get to hear it. Their next goal will be to take their new music on tour domestically and internationally, and hopefully will get the opportunity to tour with some of their favorite rock bands!
When asked “What do you like most about making music?” the girls replied as follows:
Maverick – My favorite experience is when a fan is so moved by a song that I have written and performed that they come up to me after the show or write me a letter telling me that I have impacted their life for the better. There’s no better reward for a musician then to know that they’ve really made a difference. That’s what art is all about!
Tanya – My favorite thing about making music is having the ability to fully express my innermost emotions through the voice of my guitar. I love being able to transfer that energy to the fans through my performance.
Tia – I love the connection I make with my amazing bandmates and with the crowd. Creating that mystical connection is what I live for!
Kat – My favorite part about making music is when we are in the middle of a live set and I look up and see the rest of my bandmates having the time of their lives genuinely enjoying what they’re doing as much as I do. I like to think that our positive energy is contagious, and that the crowd gets to enjoy the experience as much as we do!
The advice that Flight of Fire would give to aspiring musicians would be to just keep making music! Don’t worry about it being perfect or even good right away; just keep making it and expressing yourself. Imitation is a great place to start, but eventually try to move towards making something that you have never heard before, making something that is uniquely you, and don’t stop!
Flight of Fire would also like to take this opportunity to give special thanks to Joe Bennett of TalentRaters for conducting this exclusive interview. To all our fans, friends, and supporters throughout the world, we truly thank you!
TalentRaters would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gerg Anidem with IndieSceneRadio (ISR) for connecting us with this excellent band. Find Gerg at IndieSceneRadio.com and be sure to catch his show and live chat with the artists on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 PM to 9 PM EST.

The members of Flight of Fire grew up in the ’90s and early aughts when the Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls ruled radio. But simple, silly pop acts didn’t do it for Flight of Fire. The band’s founders — frontwoman Dorian Maverick, guitarist Tanya Venom and bass player Tia Mayhem — fell in love with classic rock ’n’ roll.

inRead invented by Teads
“Tanya’s favorite band is Led Zeppelin, Tia’s is Rush and mine is Queen,” Maverick said. “Rock was what mattered to us. Of course, we eventually discovered the women that blazed the trail for us and fell in love with them, especially the Runaways, Cherie Currie, Joan Jett and Lita Ford.”
The trio, now rounded out by drummer Maddie May Scott, met as students at Berklee College of Music a decade ago — Tanya and Tia, twin sisters whose real last name is Dmuchowski, heard Maverick singing on the T and immediately asked her to jam. Since then, Flight of Fire’s sound has evolved to include the bombast of ’70s rock, the sleeze of ’80s glam metal and the raw energy of the Runaways.
Tomorrow, the band will pull it all together at Once Ballroom to celebrate the release of “She’s a Badass,” a new single recorded with hero Currie, who will be a special guest at the show.
“She’s a legend, a great singer whose work with the Runaways in the ’70s paved the way for us to get up on stage and not have people throw tomatoes at us,” Maverick said. “Getting to record this new single with her in L.A. was a dream come true. We were nervous before we got in the studio with her, but once we did she was amazing, super nice and supportive. Once we actually started recording, it all felt pretty normal.”
While Flight of Fire will do songs from its own catalog tomorrow, they will also back up Currie for a few tunes.
“We’ll basically get to act as a Runaways tribute band,” Maverick said. “Which means I get to do my best Joan Jett impression, which I love.”
Because Flight of Fire insists on turning every show into a spectacular onetime event, the night will include a video shoot for “She’s a Badass” and the final reunion of Boston punk champs Lizzy Borden and the Axes.
“We want to do something new at every show,” Maverick said. “We can’t always do it, but we always try.”
While next year will feature Flight of Fire doing a lot of the same — writing, recording, touring — the band will break new ground.
“We want to get back to Europe to tour and go to places we haven’t been,” Maverick said. “Also, we have been booked to play on the Melissa Etheridge Cruise. We’re really excited because (concert promoter) Sixthman is putting this on and they also put on the KISS Kruise and other Festivals at Sea. It would be super fun to do a few more of those. Or really anything that comes our way.”
Flight of Fire with Cherie Currie, Lizzie Borden and the Axes, Blindspot and The Knock Ups, at Once Ballroom, 156 Highland Ave., Somerville, tomorrow. Tickets: $25 – $30; oncesomerville.com. - Boston Herald
