Parabolabola by Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s three piece Filter Free Rodeo is an energetic noise pop approach to what some might remember as ’90s fuzz rock.
What the hell does that sound like!?, you say?
This is Nirvana coming back to kick the doors down on a recording session between The Strokes and Cage the Elephant to remind them who used to change the diapers in this house.
The first four tracks open up with that slap to the face you sometimes need to get going in the morning.
Something interesting happens on Jashin’ (track 5) as the vocals take an atmospheric twist into a climax of silence followed by… well I’m not going to spoil it for you.
Parabolabola closes out with three more well crafted jams to complete this adventure through noise.
I’m about to listen through again. This is a great one to crank up and rock out.
Sometimes that is all you need to say. You can stream the album below.

This Indie college radio sounding band is on their way to creating quite a following. This three piece basement/ garage band group calls Milwaukee home. Traditionally, Milwaukee has been known for their love of beer, brats, cheese, and the Green Bay Packers. My gut tells me they are about to add another love to that list and it is Filter Free Rodeo. Filter Free Rodeo’s latest video release on youtube has already reached 17,000 hits. Since I was wondering what the buzz is about, I had to check it out. They did not disappoint and are worth a look and a listen.
The latest search for the next best thing on shows like America’s Got Talent, The Voice, and American Idol have a common theme of looking for someone who sounds different. Guess what, these guys fit the bill. With a unique sound of electric noise infused into their indie style but yet has undertones of alternative pop, they can be classified as different.
The band is planning on touring the Midwest and West Coast promoting their EP this summer. Their video shows the guys driving around in a typical winter day just jamming and having fun showcasing their playful side. One guarantee from me is that I will NEVER convert to a Green Bay Packer fan but I will have a brat and a beer while listening to Filter Free Rodeo. If you too are looking for a new sound, go check these guys out! - Midwest Music Madness

*What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?
Filter Free Rodeo. When we first started out, we were called Filter Free Rodeo, but we felt that it was to ametueristic. Like, oh why don’t we just make our name sound musical by putting the word radio at the end. So then we changed it to Filter Free Rodeo and now it sounds like a party.
*Please list the name, age, school, and respective instrument of each band member.
Phil Hoge (19)- guitar, vocals
Evan Kotlowski (20) – bass
Jash Campbell (19) – drums
*What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
noise-pop is what we like to call it. some people prefer stoner-pop, but it is basically a variation off of 90's grunge
Influences:
Nirvana, Death From Above 1979, Metz, The Strokes, Cage the Elephant, Queens of the Stone Age
*How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
Phil and Evan have known each other since kindergarten and have been playing music together for five years. However, they have both bonded over music since and a comical obsession (or lack there of) over Nickelback. They met Jash one day as he walked past them on Brady St. in Milwaukee and was shouting “HarvardYale” or that’s at least how it was remembered. When they saw him another time, they were like you’re that HarvardYale guy and an instant bond was formed, as dumb as that sounds. You have to keep in mind that Jash is the goofiest and most mysterious kid you will ever meet.
*When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
Filter Free Rodeo was formed after various jam sessions with various members, finally settling into the current line-up.
*Do you have a record label? Are you a member of any music organizations?
Although we have had record labels pursue us, but have decided to remain unsigned.
*What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever’s available? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/color preference?
Phil prefers semi-hollow guitars, for there warm sound, and sustain through distortion pedals. Evans bass tone its comparable to Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine. He likes to expirement with guitar efect pedals, through a huge bass cab. Jash plays whatever, he just likes to hit things.
*Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
We have performed all across the Midwest. Some of our favorite venues are the Mirarmar in Milwaukee, WI, the Warehouse in Lacrosse, WI, and the Elbo Room in Madison. A fun place that is not a serious show for us, is Six Flags in Gurnee, IL. We have played they numerous times and have a blast sneaking off and riding the rides in between the sets, and uh lets say messin around in the “graveyard” behind the scenes of six flags. We are planning a summer tour that will go through the Midwest as well as a few California shows. We leave on May 23rd. The first show is at the Rave in Milwaukee, WI.
*Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list?
We only have two releases, so we play the best off of each, as well as some covers. We like to do a cover of Nirvana’s Breed and Death From Above 1979's Pull Out. Normally we plan out our sets, or we would totally forget what we were doing.
*Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
We write the songs off of jam sessions in Phil’s basement, then he adds the vocals later. Phil likes using the topics of self-worth, change, and of course love. Over time, his lyrics will probably become less sarcastic, and more “mature”, if you will.
*Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
Phil’s basement. It just kind of happens.
*What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?
We honestly don’t rehearse that much. We try, but we always end up just jamming out to new ideas.
*How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
Our latest release “Parabolabola” took a much darker turn than our first. It’s still surfy and happy, but the core of each song defiantly has some demonistic traits.
*What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Staying together. We are all so young and our lives are taking different routes. Its hard to remain on the same page and committed, even though we know we have something special to offer.
*What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
We just want to play huge shows. We don’t care about money or a legacy. Playing for an enormous group of people - Infamous Empire

The music video directors of Milwaukee have spoken, and black and white is in.
By sheer coincidence, shaggy pop rockers Filter Free Radio and Oedipus Tex and the Motherf***ers have released new music videos within a couple weeks of each other, and they're both in black and white.
Filter Free Radio's video for "Bleach!," from its EP "Parabolabola," released last month on its Bandcamp page, features the trio rocking out in the car and enjoying some soft serve.
Tex's new single "Kill Your Cell Phone" is a comical cautionary tale likening smartphone addicts to zombies, and the video tosses in footage of fire, cell phone destruction and Shops of Grand Avenue's holiday favorite the Leonard Bearstein Orchestra for good measure. Hats off to Matt Wild at A.V. Club Milwaukee for the tip-off on that one. - Milwaukee Journal Sentinal
Block Says: The only thing I like Bleached is clean clothes and porn stars buttholes.
Just kidding…They seem like nice/fun dudes and all and it's subtly weird enough that it held my attention…But what can I say, I'd rather go listen to Trina Album tracks.
Tim Says: I adore weird shit that is pretty much like a gumbo of my favorite genres, throw in the fact that the video reminds me of the movie Clerks and you have a low hanging curve I am going to knock out of the box....yes that is code for being gay for this. - SYFFAL
For years, garage bands have been around to entertain millions with their unique sound and capture fans with their hard work and dedication to making it big in the music industry. When you think there could be a dimmer in the world of garage bands, here comes Filter Free Radio. This artistic band from Milwaukee, WI describes themselves as “a modern twist to 90’s alternative music.” Let’s face it. We all miss the 90’s with their grunge music and worn-in clothing. So here they come ladies and gentleman, Filter Free Radio!
They started out just like your average high school band, jamming out in a basement with a few friends. Influenced by bands like Pearl Jam, Mud Honey and of course Nirvana, they started creating their own music and realized that what they were writing could be something fantastic! Fantastic would be an understatement for these three young men at the age of 18. Writing your own music and forming a band with this much conjunction in sound is an accomplishment in itself.
Filter Free Radio is one of those high energy bands that make people feel pumped and excited while listening to their music. With Phil Hoge on guitar and vocals, Evan Kotlowski on bass and Josh Campbell on drums, you can’t go wrong! You can imagine being at one of their shows, seeing their liveliness up on stage and bringing that back down into the crowd. This says that Filter Free Radio makes for an astounding experience.
Taking a dive into their song “Mind My Way,” is one of the most fascinating experiences you might come across in their music. “It’s about a really weird dream our lead singer had one night,” says the band. Listening to the lyrics, you can tell how disturbed he was. The lyrics in particular “Is this dream a reality? Do I believe in sanity?” gives you a glimpse into the song as a whole. You can tell that this dream has wrapped itself in his head and will not leave. Its darkness and questioning definitely makes you think about what is reality and what is not.
Surely, we all have come across a point in time where we are trying to find ourselves. Not knowing who you are sometimes is a part of life. “Time For A Change,” is the poster song for people in the process of discovering themselves. But, not knowing who you are means that you can never be the same nor change, which is the object of the song. It’s certainly on the top of the list of their songs to listen to.
“We hope that when people listen to our music, they can appreciate the fact that we are only 18 and are trying to make it in the music industry…Overall, Filter Free Radio is a creative outlet for all three of us. Playing shows and recording is just pure fun and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.” So needless to say their hard work is paying off and we will all be looking forward to seeing them succeed. For you music lovers out there, you would not want to miss out on such a gifted band, Filter Free Radio can be found on Facebook, MySpace, Soundcloud, and Reverbnation. So go check them out, you will not be disappointed! - Indie Music Reviewer
