Evelyn DuVall is THE up and coming female rapper, singer and songwriter. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, by way of Dallas, Texas, Evelyn is the artist to watch and is currently finding her place in the Arizona scene, managing to further push her pen with each release. Her signatures include a heavy-hitting sound, experimental beats, and bold lyrics demonstrating unique and polished artistry. Only having begun rapping exactly one year ago, her growing discography boasts the freshman release of her 7-track mixtape entitled "Billion Dollar Baby".
Fresh off last summer's release of "Billion Dollar Baby", she is now focused on forthcoming singles and features- with an EP slated for release mid-2019. The latest single “Groupies” kicks off further sonic development for Evelyn DuVall. This track, with an energetic melody, self-assured point-of-view, and emphasis on lyrical integrity reflects her ongoing evolution as both a songwriter and producer. Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn DuVall.
Evelyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and lived out the majority of my childhood residing in the city. I grew up an only child which has its perks at times, even though it may seem lonely to most people. I didn’t have any siblings that could occupy my time, so the only thing I could truly do was create. I would say growing up I always had this huge fascination with the art of making music, the sound, the visuals, and the creativity just everything about it drew me into becoming an artist myself. When I was around the age of 10, I moved out to Atlanta and started writing and producing songs myself. I spent so much time laying low and perfecting my craft for years until I felt I was ready to officially drop something. 2017 was the year I started releasing music and it had a great response that pushed me to keep working for want I wanted.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve dealt with plenty of obstacles throughout my journey as an artist. In the beginning, I struggled with being confident in my craft, I eventually got past it once I stopped caring what other people thought of me. I will say that everything I have been through has shaped how I carry myself when it comes to business. My best advice to any young woman pursuing a career is to do whatever you want! It’s important to not care about making mistakes or being perfect, just experiment until you find what works best for you.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I like to describe myself as a rapper, writer, and producer. One of the latest things I’ve been working on is a visual set to be released in October for my new song “Bands Up,”. My latest mixtape “Serpent’s Tongue” outlines situations related to events in my life showcased in a series of songs. Dropping my second project has been one of my proudest moments that’s brought me so many opportunities. I think the things that set me apart from other people is my ability to put out music that displays my individuality. The other contributing factors would have to be my strong personality along with not having a filter when I speak which always makes me stand out.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Well, given the fact that I am still a very young woman myself, I still have a lot to learn on my own. However, I will say this, always maintain focus on any goals you may have. The key is not letting any distractions get in your way, but I feel like that’s a quality we could all use a little brushing up on if I do say so myself. - Voyage Phoenix
