“She is a trendsetter, but she’s always marched to the beat of her own drum...she can work anything, from a designer you might find at a flea market, to a runway,” said Sulmers, who called Badu an icon. “I think that is what can be attributed to her collaborating with brands because a lot of these brands that might have been under the radar or off the radar, now they’re like, ‘Whoa, there’s this beautiful woman who is an amazing artist, who also has an amazing style, and we want to work with her.’” - Gary Gerard Hamilton

Bio
Erykah Badu was born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971, in Dallas Texas. Erykah chose her performance name by incorporating what she loves. "Kah" comes from the Eqyptian term for one's" inner self" and "Badu" is her favorite jazz riff scat sound. Erykah was raised by her mother Kolleen Maria Gipson who was also an actress. Needless to say Erykah was introduced to the arts early. Erykah would perform for her mom at an early age by dancing and singing until she began to perform at the local Dallas Theatre Center.
Ms. Badu went to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. After graduating high school, Erykah attended Gambling State University where she majored in theatre and minored in quantum physics. Around this same time Erykah was active in her community and began to DJ under the name DJ Apples. However, Erykah left college in 1993 to pursue her music career.
