Empty Atlas are personifying the ancient philosophy that ‘the only constant is change’ with their new album Kairos. Taking a refreshed approach to their songwriting, the band note the differences between their debut and sophomore records; where Hestia centred on settling down, Kairos is all about shaking things up and seeking change. “Maximal” is the lead singe of their most recent release, taking a heartfelt approach to the subject of chasing one’s dreams.
“Maximal” is mighty in its sound, mixed by Tyler Spratt (Imagine Dragons, Arkells, Moby) who also worked on Empty Atlas’ previous single “Short Fiction”. Gritty guitars lead the way alongside Micah Smith’s angelic vocal (a tone not dissimilar to that of Bastille’s Dan Smith), and the lyrics tell a story of a longing to escape the mundanity of everyday life – to instead make sacrifices in the pursuit of a passion. Explaining further, Smith says “We all know people who put goals over everything else – that idea of, ‘If I sacrifice enough, I’ll get to X, and then, it’ll be worth it. Not bashing anyone for that, but me and the guys had these really honest conversations about what success looks like for us and just finding the balance between the work and joy in playing music together”.
The four musicians inject a disarming vulnerability into their songwriting approach, and it pays off in “Maximal” with its heart-on-sleeve subject matter and catchy hooks. Be sure to follow Empty Atlas on social media to keep up with their future releases… - Turtle Tempo
The first single from Empty Atlas’ latest album, ‘Maximal’ is a captivating fusion of energetic, raw and vulnerable. Mixed by Tyler Spratt and recorded at Dipping Vat Studio in Monticello, Mississippi, the track explores the subject of forfeiting everything to pursue old and new passions, and the immense pressure that comes along with the pursuit of dreams. It’s about how far you are willing to go to to get what you want, and just how black and white “making it” can be. This incredible track is both emotional, and inspiring. It urges you to live in the moment, and chase after your dreams whilst you still can. - Right Chord Music
