Nikki Black: Just when you think you’ve got them figured out, they change it up. That’s what I love about them.” - WRAT 95.9 Jersey Rock
New Brunswick quartet Experiment 34 characterize themselves as something spacey, stoneresque, and psychedelic. Three-song EP Charismanic makes the case for something a little more, well, manic than those words would imply as the band mix hard rock, prog, and funk into something reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers or a maybe less confrontational Rage Against The Machine.
Vocalist Matthew Makin reveals those influences, recalling Anthony Kiedis on opener "Check Up" or throwing in a little Zach de la Rocha fire on the closing jam to "144 Evergreen Place." The rest of the band -- Kevin Nenchka (guitar), Johnny Zabe (bass), Jack LaMonica (drums) -- have the chops to jam with anyone.
Experiment 34 come to Brighton Bar next Friday, April 15th, and Charismanic is available via their Bandcamp. - Cool Dad Music
You may have missed it, but a little over a year ago mad chemists from another planet dropped four test subjects into Central Jersey. Their purpose? Bringing righteous rock to the masses, of course.
With their powers combined, Vocalist Matthew Makin (test subject No. 5), guitarist Kevin Nenichka (test subject. No. 7), bassist Johnny Zabe (test subject No. 9), and drummer Jack LaMonica (test subject No. 13) form Experiment 34. Since forming in NJ, the band has been steadily rising and cutting their teeth in the local live scene while working on their debut EP.
The initial three song sampler from Experiment 34, Charismanic, is almost upon us as the group will celebrate its release tomorrow with a show at The Court Tavern tonight. Speak Into My Good Eye is happy to host the exclusive premiere of single “Check Up” below.
On “Check Up,” Experiment 34 conjures a wild, fiery funk-rock storm evocative of the best garage days of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Each test subject turns in an individual performance that coheres beautifully and is worthy of repeat listens just to track everything that’s going.
“It started with a bass-line and ended with a party,” shares Makin. “Check it out as Experiment 34 reminds to you get a check up from the neck up.”
Stream Experiment 34’s “Check Up” below and be sure to head to the Court Tavern tonight for their EP release show where they’ll be joined by Gravity Well, Nameless Victims, Stereo Jo and Murdock & Leeroy Green. Charismanic is out March 18th via self-release. - Speak into My Good Eye
“I really like it. It’s hard and funky. And it’s got a little bit of Hendrix in there.” -
Tim Louie, Stan Levinstone Presents/Aquarian Weekly: “They were pretty awesome on every level. Their musicianship was spot on and tight. The vocals even fit the music they were playing … “Experiment” might be the best way to describe their music because they seem to dabble in many styles in their songwriting.” - The Aquarian Weekly
"Experiment 34’s sound combines psychedelic rhythms, funky grooves, intense rap hooks and fiery guitar solos that have the power to expel negative energies from listeners." - Pop*Break
It’s always refreshing to hear about new bands from New Jersey and Experiment 34 is one of them. Although they were previously known as The Strangers., their new name is allowing for a new beginning, but with the same punch they had before and more. Their psychedelic type of alternative rock music is something we don’t hear much anymore, so listening to this foursome is a rejuvenating experience in itself. Experiment 34 will be performing at their EP release party at Court Tavern in New Brunswick on March 17. They’ll also be playing at the Rock’N Derby in New York on May 21 at 2 p.m. - The Aquarian Weekly

“I'm digging this! Really cool sound they have, almost a mix of jam, blues, '70s rock, a little funky. Retro and modern at the same time. Very cool.” -
This young New Brunswick quartet mixing a sci-fi backstory with a sound rooted in classic rock. This 3-song sampler teases the band's forthcoming debut full-length. "Check Up" starts this off by channeling the early Red Hot Chili Peppers, with funky bass and nimbly rapped lyrics. "Three Days In The Chamber" channels the Doors, with a slinky Morrison-esque vocal, groovy harmonies, and psychedelic guitars. The EP closes with "144 Evergreen Place," which continues the late 60's vibe with a nod to the Stooges. Experiment 34 brings a healthy sense of humor and fun to the band (you can read about their secret origin here) and like so many NJ bands, they clearly prioritize musicianship over image or style. You can catch Experiment 34 as part of Hub City Fest on Thursday, April 21 at Pino's in Highland Park. - Jersey Beat
Start At The End is back again this month at NYC’s oldest rock club The Bitter End in New York City on May 25. The bands chosen to play are local ones that deserve a chance at creating more buzz and getting their names out there. This month’s lineup is made up of Wyland, Experiment 34, Rob Jennings, Above The Moon, and Jared Dylan. - The Aquarian Weekly
