Dopecausewesaid is back again with another exclusive interview. This time we connect with two twin emcees out of LA who now call St. Louis home by the name of DV (Johnathan & Jarred Lindsay). They just dropped a very energetic visual entitled "Just Came", so it's only right that we touch base with Johnathan and Jarred.

After reading our Q&A with the brothers, be sure to follow them on social media, watch "Just Came" about ten times and share it with some friends.

How did you guys start making music?

We've been into a lot of different genre's of music since around 7. Jazz was actually our first love. Around 22 was when we decided to make music professionally. That also happen to be the exact time our mother died, which was also a major motivator for us (Johnathan).

Was one brother more interested in writing than the other initially?

Nah, i'd say we both were equally.

Describe your creative process for us. Do you seek out instrumentals before writing or vice versa?

We do a little bit of both. We try to keep the creative process pretty open and balanced. We make it happen however it needs to happen. (Jarred)

For most of the United States, St. Louis is still known for Nelly and his movement back in the early-mid 200s. Tell us about the music scene in St. Louis, specifically for rap music currently.

We're originally from L.A., but we've been living in st. Louis for almost 7 years now and we've been familiar with the city even longer. From what we've noticed the rap scene is mainly split between gangsta and conscious rap. Then you've got a few artists like DV, Tef Poe, Black Spade, The Knuckles, Spark1duh? and Jia Davis who kinda stand out on their own. St. Louis definitely has a huge music scene in general. (Jarred)

We really dig you guys' new video for "Just Came"; congrats on putting together a very energetic visual and positive song overall. Tell us about the video shoot and how you guys connected with Black Spade for his feature.

Spade has been doing his thing for a minute now on at least a national scale. I'd say he's an OG for sure. We connected with him first through Jia Davis. He introduced us to him at The Gramaphone on Manchester. To us, Spade has one of the best voices in music so it was just a perfect fit. We also brought in our homegirl Brittany Henley to harmonize with spade on the hook...she's the other voice you hear in that. The video was shot at Blank Space, a major staple on Cherokee Street. Cherokee Street is like our version of Abbot Kinney in Venice California, which is why we call it our second home. The major focus of the video was to highlight Cherokee Street and the overall feel good vibe we bring as a group.

Who produced "Just Came"?

The song was produced by Black Spade as well. (Johnathan)

What's next for you guys musically? Will "Just Came" appear on an upcoming release?

Not too sure about that yet...normally we'd say yeah for sure but we're doing things differently this time around. Trying a different approach on releasing music now. Just wanna take our time and give this song more time and attention..sit back and see the potential of it. (Johnathan)

Judging from the "Just Came" video, you guys have a very lively stage show. What do you enjoy most about performing live and and do you have a favorite song to perform?

Double Vision(DV) is a hip-hop duo consisting of two emcees, Jarred and Johnathan - better known as “Twiin” and “2win”. I want to mention right off that the passion these two have for music clearly shines thru in their music. Both emcees bring a diverse flow to the table and honestly, have some really organic delivery while keeping it chill. Mad prop's to both Twiin and 2win for making some good tracks.

This duo has been putting in work for the last few years and just came (ironically) out with the visuals on their new song, 'Just Came' featuring Black Spade - which is a pretty funky, yet groovy ass track. They showcase with good delivery and power bars. This 'healthy breakfast' is an ode to the fans old school soul-hop where an emcee spoke to his crowd with wit and vibe worthy lyricism. Give it a listen and show your support to these very dedicated and talented artists.

To those who meet them, Hip Hop artists Jarred and Johnathan Lindsay, better known as Mackamillion and Mr. Mackmore, present a Double Vision, and not just because they are twins. Their group is DV, short for Double Vision, and their music captures a bold vision of both simplicity and intellectual intensity. The vision is unmistakable in their latest EP, “(Ra)w Form.” Mackamillion explains that “Raw form is about finding the God in you or the Creator within yourself.” Even the title’s spelling, (Ra)w, has deeper meaning: that the process of creating anything, be it music, money, or even another being, starts from the same source; the raw energy that permeates the whole universe, known by some as God, or love, or universe, or Amen Ra, aka the Egyptian Sun God.

The duo hail from Venice, CA and have spent most of their years shuffling back and forth between the Midwest and west coast. And they’ve been making rhymes before they were out of their Underoos and shaking up Hip Hop stereotypes ever since. Their “ahead-of-our-time style” has been magnetizing audiences by addressing issues of the common folks, a far cry from the typical “iced out jewels and drug dealers stories of the notorious past.”



It was in ’08 that they released the independent full-length “No Explanation!” Two years later they dropped their label debut “Bifocal,” an EP released on No Sleep Records. Now, with the release of “(Ra)w Form,” they have simplified their name (DV) as well as their music. Simplified or not, DV consistently holds ultimately to just one vision: to make music that is, as Mackamillion describes it, “innovative and creative, and made for those who actually have a brain.” - RBLmag.com

Sometimes in life, there are powerful forces beyond our control. Technology, for example, is a force that creates eight-year-olds with cell phones and drives budget-conscious Americans to lay down hundreds of dollars for an iPad in a recession. Daytime television is another prime example—its queen, Oprah, is a force unlike any other. All she has to do is mention the name of a random book, and in hours, it will be flying off the shelves. A more recent force has entered the fashion world for Hip-Hop, and while we may not all like it (myself included), it’s real and it’s happening: skinny jeans. You can accept that, or you can get out of the way.

With that said, some decent music has been inspired by this trend. Cali put itself back on the map with “jerkin” in skinny jeans a lá the New Boyz and “You’re a Jerk.” But look twice, because they’re not the only ones producing bangers about tight-fitting denim. Young duo Double Vision is also on the map with their single “Skinny Jeans.” “Check, check the way we rock, check, check the way we rock, skinny jeans—fat pockets, so fresh so cool…”

Out of Los Angeles, Double Vision is made up of twin brothers Jonathan and Jarred Lindsay, also known as Mackamillion and Mr. Mackmore, respectively. They released their debut album, Bifocals, in July, and while it’s only a total of eight tracks, the sound is pretty varied throughout. You have the “Skinny Jeans” anthem, with its straightforward beat, contagious hook, and clever use of the chopped and screwed sound, then you have “On & On,” a Rock-inspired track with heavy guitar and melodic verses. By the way, these guys not only look alike, they sound very similar, too! I think this plays to their advantage; it’s a little like having a schizophrenic rapper. Each artist on today’s list brings something different and new to music- for that they deserve recognition. Today, Bizzom brings you a batch of rising talent that have potential to make an impact in the new year.



1.) Canadian beauty Melanie Fiona stepped on the music scene with the sultry and bluesy “Give it To Me Right” . The singer’s vocal prowess is a force to be reckoned with. Melanie’s solid first studio album tackled the never-ending lessons of love and heartbreak. 3.) Double Vision is what Hip-Hop needs at the moment. The duo from St. Louis has a sound that embodies both old and new school rap. Whatever experiences life brings them, Double Vision unleashes it in their hard-hitting material. The group consist of twin brothers Johnathan and Jarred. 4.) It’s a rarity to come across someone like Rocco Deluca-one you hear his sound you’ll be hooked. Deluca’s soul stirring voice flows so incredibly well Rock & Rock and Contemporary music. The Long Beach native allowed fans into his world with his debut “I Trust You to Kill Me”. Momentarily, Rocco Delucca is hitting the road gaining fans as he goes. His second album “Mercy” in stores now.



5.) Ohio based band The Black Keys consist of members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney. Together the two combine the gritty funk of Rock & Rock and the heart of Rhythm & Blues. Without a doubt, The Black Keys are the future of music. The band’s great usage of instruments bring out an sound that’s aggressive and downright ear pleasing.



6.) Atlanta Georgia native Elise 5000 is emerging into one of music’s hottest news acts. An eclectic artist, Elise 5000 love for her music has no boundaries. Elise mixes with genres of Pop, Hip Hop and R&B. “Star” is the epitome of Pop perfection. With its lively instruments, infectious beat and catchy hook-”Star” forever stays in your head.



7.) Inside that tiny little frame lies a big voice. Priscilla Renea, a cutesy and free-spirited 21-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia made a name for herself with”Dollhouse” an Electronica/Pop pleaser. Renea’s storybook-like album Jukebox, packs a punch with charming material, sweet melodies and creative lyrics.



8.) The emotions of both pain and sorrow lie in the voice of Jessica Lea Mayfield. The feelings that she conveys in her songs-you instantly feel the connection with her. To no surprise, the world is already beginning take notice of Jessica’s talents. The 20-year-old songs have been included hit TV series such as Gossip Girl and CSI.



9.) Is the world ready for Theophilus London? Yes. The smooth, easy listening sounds from this Brooklyn rapper couldn’t have come at a better time. With everyone from MTV to Rolling Stone taking notice of talented young musician-the sky is the limit. Mr. Theophilus current disc Humdrum London is available for FREE via Green Label Sounds.



10.) He’s a Electronic/Techno kid at heart. Let the rhythm take its control and vibe to the refreshing Jimmy Edgar. It was at the Electronic scene where Edgar was first discovered. You’ll get so lost in Jimmy’s music, that you forget he’s even singing half the time. And with insanely addictive and trancelike beats this good, that’s not a bad thing at all.

The hip-hop world has two new musical genius' - Johnathan and Jarred - better known individually as Mackamillion and Mr. Mackmore and together as Double Vision.

Double Vision are twin brothers that have been compared to duos such as Kriss Kross, Camp Lo, Little Brother, Outkast and the recent chicago based duo The Cool Kids, for their impeccable style of dress code. "We like to set trends for what should and shouldn't be. We're not gangsters, we're more like a funky twist of backpackers and macks," states Mackamillion

Being born in Venice, CA, they are used to being around artistic energy and cultural diversity, combine that with their time spent living between cities across the mid-west and south the duo are wise beyond their years and offer real insight in their music.

When asked about their genre of music they so proudly claim as their own, Mr.Mackmore explains, "we speak for the men and women who seem to naturally attract the opposite sex without what some people call game or the use of pick up lines. As for the backpacker part, we're talking about those independent artist, Hip Hop purist and entrepreneurs who's got their own hustle, no matter what genre of music or business their involved in"

With that said the duo are ready to showcase this style when they release their debut album "Bifocal" on August 24th. The album, available on No Sleep Records, is an EP that consists of eight tracks that is said to be "reminiscent of Pharcyde and Outkast mixed with Gym Class Heroes" - from what we've heard we couldn't agree more, the project musically fuses Hip-Hop, Rock and Ska and with the duos lyrically ability you are in for something truly distinctive.

The EP's single "Skinny Jeans" showcases Double Vision's playful side while the introspective "Walk On By" sees the twins trade verses about individuality and acceptance. Both the tracks, along with "DIY Or Die," can be heard within the full tracklist below.

Jarred and Johnathan are rapping twin brothers from St. Louis. As Mr. Mackmore and Mackamillion, respectively, they form a rap collective. Today, they are as active as ever with their own unique brand of Hip Hop – Backpack/Mackrap. Their motto: do it yourself or die. Their name: Double Vision.

“We just want people to ‘do you’. We want to bring back the artistry to music in general, but especially with Hip Hop. It’s about time to distinguish the difference betweeen Rap and Hip Hop. Let ‘em know what a rapper is and what a real MC does. We definitely want to up the ante on what a real hip hop show feels like – not just a bunch of fools running around holding their dicks and screaming on the mic!” said Johnathan.

The ambitious brothers have clear goals and are planning on using their own form of Hip Hop to reach them. Johnathan: “Our music is a constant representation of our past and day-to-day experiences, which we call Backpack/Mackrap. The backpacker part describes our independent, entrepreneurial spirit. It’s music spoken from our perspective as young males, who live a bachelor’s life: Mackrap. There’s a fine line between a Mack and a pimp, which has been cofused throughout the Hip Hop world.”

Originality
Because of their overall fresh vibe, Double Vision gets often compared to groups such as The Pharcyde, Camp Lo and Little Brother. What do the brothers have to say about that? “We’ve been influenced by all of them in some way or another. Especially with groups like Camp Lo and The Pharcyde. Back in the ‘90s, The Pharcyde showed us that we didn’t have to be a product of our environment. Although gangbanging was a large part of where we lived, it didn’t exactly have to directly influence us; at least not in a negative way. Camp Lo showed us how to be comfortable with ourselves as actual artists. They also showed us how important aesthetic and style are in entertainment. They taught us originality.”

Right now a new EP is in the making. “You can expect to be inspired! Expect to be enlightend and entertained. We’re trying to touch on all five senses. Expect a classic. Oh, and expect it to go gold!! Hopefully you all go download it when it drops!”, Johnathan says. Since there’s no official title for the EP just yet, Johnathan and Jarred are giving people the opportunity to send in a potential name through their MySpace page. In the end, they will pick their favorite title for the EP.

Art for ears
If you’re interested in hearing material from Double Vision, you should listen to their self-released debut “No Explanation!” After that release, the duo dropped a mixtape called “Art For Ears.” Johnathan: “With that mixtape we purposely tried to stress the art factor in the music. We had a lot of fun with it, but we didn’t want to sound too over-produced, which is another issue with a lot of music nowadays! We kept it kind of natural.”

Independent
Another interesting fact about Double Vision is that they prefer to stay independent instead of signing to a major label if they had the opportunity. “We chose this route because we wanted longevity and creative control, which is what we’ve got through signing with the independent label No Sleep Records,” said Jarred. “We realized, at this point, anything a major label can do, we can basically do ourselves. It just depends on our grind. Besides, major labels are pretty much dead now anyway as far as we can tell! Indie is the new major.”

What makes Double Vision unique compared to all the other independent artists out there? “We’re not gangsters, or thugs, or even rich. We speak from the perspective of the average man, but at the same time not that average. In our music, we constantly focus on promoting positivity, originality, and creativity. We stress to the listeners: be comfortable and proud of who you are, as oposed to the same monotonous music you hear on the radio with not much substance. We always try to leave you with a message or something to think about. Most importantly, we wanna make Hip Hop fun again! ”

On the opening track of their EP, Bifocal, Double Vision, twin brothers Mackamillion (Jonathan Lindsay) and Mr. Mackmore (Jarred Lindsay), waste no time declaring their modus operandi: “D-I-Y or D-I-E/D-I-Y or we don’t eat!” And that indie aesthetic – alternative rap themes and some inconsistent sound mixing – spans most of the eight-song project. However, the real distraction is the uneven execution of the brothers’ ideas on each track, which belies their MC skills and microphone chemistry. Even with its widely varied topics, Bifocal may not be overly ambitious, but it’s clear the SoCal alt-rap duo is still searching for their comfort zone.

Nevertheless, DV knows how to make effective songs, and they don’t try to impress you with the number of syllables they can squeeze into one bar, a common pitfall of plenty indie rap records. The two practically turn “Skinny Jeans” into a lesson in how to ride a beat: “Check, check the way we rock it/plenty green, skinny jeans, fat pockets.” Throwing on their hipster caps, the Lindsay brothers’ playful personalities shine, and the throwback 808 drum kicks and clapping snares only bolster their bravado. The track is definitely an album highlight but perhaps a few years too late, given that fellow Cali-based groups The Pack and The Cool Kids covered that type of fad better with “Vans” and “Black Mags,” respectively. “Father’s Day,” featured right after “Skinny Jeans,” is an ode and thanks to responsible fathers but shows some mixed results. Mackamillion and Mackmore bring lyrics of moral and substantive value to the table, but the song just doesn’t come together. Maybe it’s because of the amateurishly sung hook or the noticeable echo captured in the mixing, but it’s a contradiction that is indicative of the EP as a whole.

Aside from “Skinny Jeans,” DV display the most promise on the boom-bap soul of bonus track “It’s You.” Part Slum Village, part Black Moon, it shows them at their most confident and reveals they’re not quite the amateurs that other parts of the EP seem to imply. When they incorporate rock (“For My”) and more live elements to the mix, the chemistry is completely off, however, and they lose their verbal fluidity. The brothers appear to perform better with more traditional, drum-programmed beats, and perhaps this may be the key to how Double Vision should define their sound on future endeavors.

How did you get your band name?

Naturally, with us being twins, people kept walking up to us and taking notice to the fact that we’re twins and would say stuff like “Am I seeing double?” So it just kinda stuck. Along with the fact that it’s 2 people who share the same goal from 2 perspectives.

How did you get started as a band?

Pretty much formed at birth, but started actually rhyming at age 7.

What is your most memorable Tour Experience?

The day we rocked Day old Basement in Macomb, IL. t was the most hyped, but unexpected show till this day!

What bands are you influenced by?

so many. The Knux, Camp Lo, Pharcyde, Slum Village, Outkast, Gym Class Heroes, Red Hot Chillie Peppers, to name a few.

Who would be an ultimate artist for you to collaborate with musically?

Camp Lo.

Who is your favorite unsigned band?

Texas Funerals.

Double Vision - No Explanation!

St. Louis’ Double Vision are two of a kind, literally. Twin brothers Jarred (Mr. Mackamore) and Johnathan (Mackamillion) have been rapping since they were seven years old. The Venice, CA born duo have moved around a lot over the years and have consequently picked up quite the range of musical influences. Their debut album, No Explanation! is now available.

No Explanation! makes use of fairly standard rap conventions -- high levels of profanity and misogyny, all while Double Vision claims or implies their mackhood. No Explanation! is interesting lyrically. Aside from the overuse of meaningless words to convey thoughts, as noted above, the twins are fairly adept poets. Both are also quite accomplished on the mic. I did find this album hard to listen to though as I had a hard time with the musical choices that made the bed for their poetry.

I Don't Stop and Back Packer were both quite impressive, as were Devine Attraction, In It To Win It and A Mack's Poem. The musical aspect was unoriginal at best, and downright abrasive at worst (So Cool). I would love to hear these two poet/rappers with a producer who might provide them with a wider horizon of sounds to play against. I think the results would be fantastic. Nevertheless, lyrically there may not be many better.

No Explanation! is a strong accomplishment with some obvious flaws, but on the whole a worthwhile experience. Double Vision are highly talented pair who should be throwing down rhymes of interest for years to come.

We won't be revoking your hipster card any time soon, Double Vision. Not after that lovely ode to skinny jeans and fat pockets. "Skinny Jeans" is the centerpiece of this Los Angeles hip-hop duo's new, impressive debut — and a worthy centerpiece it is. Built around a chunky two-step beat, the song emanates cool. Bass on blast/Just let the beat bang/Pants saggin' off my ass/I just let them bitches hang, raps Mackamillion (a.k.a. Jonathan Lindsay). His intonation is slow and deliberate. He relishes each consonant and slurs each vowel. In the course of the song, Mackamillion and twin brother Mr. Mackmore (a.k.a. Jarred Lindsay) name-check JanSport backpacks, slashed bandanas, and a popular dance called the Jerk. Each verse ends in a catchy refrain: So fresh, so cool...lookin' clean in my skinny jeans.

Double Vision works the twin angle beyond the point of ostentation, and clearly it's what defines it. The MC's voices are so similar that if you didn't see two heads on the album jacket, you might think it was one guy rapping. Bifocal succeeds on the merits of its slangy raps and groove-driven beats. Producers Jeff "Stress" Davis, Jansport J, Marcus D, and The Padhitters sure make some interesting music. Many of the tracks sound like riff-based instrumentals, rather than looped samples. "Walk on By" uses a doo-woppy vocal chorus. "Other Side" has a drawn out horn solo. Bonus track "It's You" is just plain funky. Bifocal isn't perfect, but it augurs well for a fledgling hip-hop group. Surely, these twins will be rapping long after skinny jeans go out of style. (No Sleep)
