It is so nice hearing a rich, raw and vibrant recording like this. Thank God they still make artists like Doc. Great songs, honest delivery and a textured voice makes this recording a most welcome friend. Head down I-25 to the Colorado/New Mexico line with this CD playing and you will know what I mean. These songs are at the heart of America. Integrity in the music industry will be saved as long as there are albums like these. Well done Doc, you got a fan for life here.

Jeremy "Doc" Hodges's old school country/campfire vibe is refreshing amongst the cookie cutter acts of CMT and the like. From the opening track and beyond, Doc's voice mixes the best of Waylon and Johnny Cash into stories that matter. The sweetest acoustic tracks are "By and By" and then prepare for the five-hanky "Tired of Being Lonely". Doc Hodges was born an old soul into a General Motors family in Flint, Michigan. In many ways, the ups and downs that Flint has experienced are paralleled in his own life. As a young man in the late 1980s, Doc moved to Tennessee as the well of jobs in Flint began to dry up. Discovering the literature of Plato, Poe, and Whitman, Doc began writing poetry and amassed over 200 poems before starting into music.
As chance would have it, at 19 he lost his girlfriend and job in the same night. With nothing left to do, he befriended an outlaw who taught him to play guitar. Writing his first song just four days later, it seemed the poet was destined to embark on the journey of songwriting. Writing in the neighborhood of 50 original songs to date, the lyrics reflect the hardships of life.
After drifting for a few years, he enlisted in the Air Force, eventually earning a commission as an officer. Concurrently completing his Ph.D., Doc now is also an assistant professor of aeronautics, seemingly dedicated to improving the community and lives of those he calls countrymen. During his years of service, Doc developed his style and stage presence by playing in a variety of praise and worship bands all over the world.
Docs debut, self-released CD, Autumn in July was released on May 11th, 201114 years to that fateful day when he first picked up the guitar. Its funny how things work out, says Doc. I totally agree. People often look for answers on why things work out the way they do. The answers are there, but we dont always find them. I HAD to make this record, states Doc. It was the only thing I could do that made me feel like I wasnt living in an episode of the Twilight Zone.
Doc is highlighting the single Highway of Life from the new album, which is about a man whos always done the right thing, put everyone else first, and his own desires aside. Finding himself at the end of that commitment, divorced and alone, he decides to start living life on his termsdriving a new sports car down that highway of life. As he starts out on the new journey, hes feeling a bit shaky and unsure of himself, but he knows its something he must do. You can hear the Johnny Cash-like country sound, with resonant vocal delivery and that hard signature rhythm that holds the heart beat of the song. He has quite a story to tell. You just need to stop and listen, and absorb that metaphoric message.
Autumn in July is a book of trials and tribulations, contemplation and reflection, being delivered to you through beautifully arranged music for your pleasures, for your soul. The influence of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan are evidenced in Docs lyrical phrasing and playing style. His methodic cry of Its a thousand miles to Omaha, but your memry is right here with me opens the album and reaches the depths of melancholy that only an experienced sufferer can endure and overcome. Doc genuinely covers the traditional Gods Gonna Cut You Down, Neil Diamonds Captain of a Shipwreck, Bob Dylans Tell Ol Bill, and The Cold Hard Facts of Life (made famous by Porter Wagoner), as well as adding 10 deeply personal originals that detail the conflicting conditions of the human spirit. If youve ever wondered what life is like When I Aint Drinkin, or how to embrace a Nebraska River, or when to turn against a cold wind bringing the title track Autumn in July, this album gives answers to those who yearn for something, anything to make sense of this crazy world.
The track Tell Ol Bill was previously released on a regional Bob Dylan tribute called Positively Pikes Peak The Pikes Peak Region Sings Bob Dylan, released in 2010. This CD featured tracks of Colorado Springs area artists covering various Dylan songs with the westward open sky influence.
Doc plays locally in and around Alexandria, Virginia and hopes to develop dates for an east coast tour in the near future.
