Deem Spencer – “fucked up flowers”

It never fails to amaze how many talented people go under the radar while the standard outlets of music consumption are overloaded with subpar music. This phenomenon is extremely prevalent in hip hop and it leaves this author in a deep dejection. Deem Spencer, another Queens MC, has received the unfortunate end of this trend for sometime now. A little over two weeks ago, Deem dropped what my mind and ears have unanimously decided is one of the most underrated sonic contributions of 2016 with his sunflower ep. “Fucked up flowers” is one of the best tracks from the album. It’s an honest account of one man’s thoughts on the world around him. Like his Queen’s comrade before him on this list, Deem is also extremely transparent and reminds us that woes do not discriminate. Highlighting his apparent detachment from a lot of thing going as a method of coping. Deem, is a simple man who appreciates the little things and it shows in his song’s structure. From soothing vocals to profound flows and prodigious lyricism, he crafts his songs like a veteran. Deem Spencer is someone you need to pay attention to. Give him his flowers before he’s ascended too high to smell them. The fifth leaf was next to a meadow. - Cypher League

"Deem Spencer releases new EP 'Sunflower,' to perform at Don Pedro on 10/25"

The blurring of the lines between the hip-hop and RnB genres has been an exciting development in recent years. Headliners like Frank Ocean, and Isaiah Rashad have highlighted a generation of emcees that like to sing, or crooners that spit bars on ocassion. deem spencer is an emerging Queens based artist that belongs to this category. Over the past year, the he has maintained a steady stream of output, culiminating in the release of his Sunflowers EP a month ago. Spencer's appeal as an artist lies in striking, abstract lyrics and tense, atmospheric production. His backing instrumentals, while lush, are also stripped down, allowing for his poetic lyrics and soft vocals, whether they be sung or rapped, to take center stage. If his music puts you in the mood, you can check him out live on 10/16 at Don Pedro. - Henry Solotaroff-Webber - The Deli Magazine

"Queens Rapper Deem Spencer Brings Subdued Soul on "soap""

Deem Spencer is a 21-year-old artist from Jamaica, Queens. His latest video is for a song called "soap," produced by Hannibal King and featuring cello by Sylvie Grace. It was recorded in 2016, but he wrote the song back in January of 2015, when he was still 19 years old.

"It was a year and a half after I'd graduated high school and I realized that after graduation I hadn't kept in touch with anybody that I thought I would have," Deem tells us. "A lot of my tastes, choice of activities, actions, and attitudes were influenced or altered by these people. As a kid some of the shit you get into changes your path and may stay with you your whole life. There's a lot of dumb ass things I did to impress people or to fit in and in the video I'm beating myself up over it. The title comes from the metaphor at the end: "The greatest soap does nothing for a popped bubble."

Deem is currently producing his next project with his friend Spenser, and he's headlining a show at Muchmore's in Brooklyn on January 20th. Check out "soap" below. - Pigeons & Planes

2016 - sunflower

Deem Spencer, from Queens NY, likes to write songs about unhealthy relationships through immature perceptions of love. On his latest EP 'sunflower', the young artist repaints overheard stories of lust, break-ups and the imperfect demonstrations of love that have been in his peripheral throughout his life.
