"Album Review: Dévah Quartet"

DEVAH QUARTET's Self titled EP starts out with [We, The] Dark Angels with a flurry of screeches that sounds like it could be from a Mastadon album. - LiveMusicTO

"NXNE Live Review"

"Strings never sounded so punk, so danceable, like these ladies made it sound. With a fantastic rock drummer backing them up they thrashed on their amplified instruments"

- livemusicTO

"deVah quartet at Horseshoe Tavern"

deVah Quartet were last this night but certainly not least. When we saw four lovely ladies getting on stage and setting up bizarre looking instruments we were left wondering. Their website tells us "deVah is comprised of an electric violin, two electric 5-string hybrids, an electric cello capable of multi bass octaves, and guest drums. deVah invents a rich texture of sound utilizing various non-acoustic modifying tools creating a different tone and dimension to their music. Set apart from any stereotypical mold, deVah is continuously evolving and recreating itself, innovating the quartet world in electric string artistry." When they kicked into action we felt the same emotion as the first time we saw The Blue Man Group or Cirque du Soleil. This was something new, something exciting, and something that will explode. As much as I hate reality shows, I can almost picture deVah Quartet on America's Got Talent - and winning it. Spectacular stage presence and charisma, the band played a mix of original compositions and well know covers. When they finished their set the crowd wouldn't let them go so the ladies obliged and played an unplanned cover of The Killers. - T-MAK world

Bio

To call Toronto's Dévah Quartet a 'string quartet' would be a boldface lie. Yamaha Artists since 2011 and D'Addario Artists since 2013, Dévah is comprised of Emily on electric violin, Sharon and Moira on electric 5-string violin/viola hybrids, and Liza on electric cello. Dévah works and records with drummers Mike Vanderhule of Y&T, Mackenzie Longpre, and Kris Maddigan.

Dévah invents a rich texture of sound utilizing effect pedals typically used by electric bass, keys, and guitar, which creates different tones and dimensions to their music. Void of any stereotypical mold, Dévah is continuously evolving and recreating itself, striving to innovate the string quartet musical genre through their eclectic taste and style in music, and hopefully reach out to new audiences in the process.

In June 2013, Dévah released their much anticipated eponymous debut album. Produced by prog rock heavyweight Robert Berry, their genre has also been labeled everything from indie rock to alt pop. Whatever the style, the music is high-energy artistry performed with virtuosic ability.

The band has performed live for thousands on main stages in Toronto for such events as Canada Day in Dundas Square 2014, been featured in the UK Magazine 'PROG', performed for Toronto's 2015 Pan Am Games Countdown Launch, Vancouver's Alternative Fashion Week, TIFF, and aired on radio across North America.
