A period at its most basic level ends sentences. A period can also be used for emphasis, to bring a point to greater attention. When left alone, a period can seem like a lazy mistake or worse, a deafening silence. Luckily for Columbus, Ohio’s David Robert, his debut EP may carry . as a stylized way to denote an untitled release, but the three-track effort carries with it a purposeful heft.
Self-described as an “American folk” artist, Robert’s style is neither lodged in Americana storytelling or the lofty sermons of the genre’s more confident souls. “A Hundred Repetitions” possesses a welcome middle ground, with cyclical guitar picking answered with Robert’s unique, groggy vocal tone. While the Dylanesque mumble might be a shock in this century’s take on folk’s base design, the lo-fi, raw approach to a beloved genre is a callback to a gentler sound, with the character sketches to match. “Two Spoons” offers a louder, quicker pace, and when set at odds against the chord-coasting opener “Swanno Mtn.,” it offers a taste of Robert’s next move, whatever the title may be. - Modern Vinyl
