Brooklyn singer-songwriter Danielle Parente is getting set to release her new album Dark Eyes on 18 September, and on the heels of the smouldering R&B of “Very Last Breath (5 Minute Stares)” she now grabs your attention with an audacious and inspired electronic cover of Chris Isaak’s classic tune “Wicked Game”. With its slow build that combines electropop and straight-up dance, it has “club hit” written all over it.

“I wanted to record the cover ‘Wicked Game’ because it is one of the most iconic and beautifully executed songs for me of the ‘90s,” Parente tells PopMatters. “Also, I think the lyrics are brilliant and universal, the idea of not wanting to fall in love because you know it will tear you apart, but diving in regardless knowing full well you will drown. It’s an incredibly romantic and quite torturous notion.

“From Chris Isaak’s mellow tone, to the sexy slide guitar, to maybe one of the most classically beautiful and provocative music videos of all time, it’s pretty much engrained in me as an influence. I thought it would be an interesting take from a female perspective and to sing it with a lot of rich textures and harmonies. I recorded the vocal as an acapella. The ambient remix production was an afterthought, but I think it gives it a form of its own rather then trying to recreate the original which I feel would be impossible. This version, produced by Blaq Smurph, can exist in a night club or maybe even during the daytime on the beach but still maintain that ethereal sexiness that the original possessed.” - Pop Matters

Haunted vocals that surround you like smoke, with a soulful yet simple soundscape, “Make It Rain” showcases her gorgeous voice, poignant lyrics, and her audio engineering and production skills honed while attending New York City’s Institute of Audio Research. Of the song, Parente has said:

“I obviously wrote this song about balling out in the strip club. Just kidding. Although that’s always a good time. LOL”

“No actually this song is about harnessing energy. It’s about having a certain kind of confidence or awareness of your ability to have a sort of power or influence over your surroundings. Whether it be over another person or the weather or even having premonitions about the future. It’s about coming on strong and almost blindsiding someone. It’s about being underestimated.”

“And throwing dollar bills.”

Parente’s sense of humor is as polished as her pipes. While the track may not be about strip clubs, however, it will surely make a huge splash in the dance club scene. Check it out for yourself and see what you think!

Brooklyn-based artist Danielle Parente has just released her sophomore album, Dark Eyes, on Mytrell Records / Red Republic Ent. The 12-track project features collaborations with a variety of producers such as Prince Fox, Choppa Dunks, Boris Muzechuk, Charlie Wan, Sage Atwood, Chris Beats, J-Rob, Blaq Smurph, and Bos Billions.

The album is a journey through a romantic relationship. It starts with lust and seduction. Then, diving in and falling deeply, riding the ups and downs. And in the end, letting go but still having only love for that person. It's about realizing it's far better to have loved and lost then not to have loved at all. That's how you know you are really alive.

"With my new album, Dark Eyes, I wanted to make something that reflected the changes I was feeling emotionally and the things that interest me now musically," explains Danielle. "It's a story of love and loss but with a sense of strength and knowledge of self and ones self-worth. As producers, Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee, a.k.a. Break Science, have worked with the likes of The Fugees, Wu Tang Clan, Talib Kweli, Matisyahu and Ledisi. This experience is evident on their first full-length album, the infectious Seven Bridges. Standout opening track, “Brain Reaction” provides just that, blending Break Science’s electronic artistry with the lyrics of veteran rapper Redman and the funk of Deitch’s other band, Lettuce, for a soul-thumping groove. Hip-hop up-and-comers Citizen Chance and CX add fresh rhymes and raw-edged energy to multiple tracks. Last month we took a trip to Los Angeles, California and whilst having lunch poolside at the Mondrian hotel in West Hollywood (Asia De Cuba FTW by the way), we were introduced to the music of this beautiful new talent by the name of Danielle Parente and HAD to share it with you guys.
Currently doing her rounds on the New York City live circuit, the fresh faced talent who studied Fine Arts in Upstate New York, before changing lanes and studying audio engineering and production at the Institute of Audio Research in Manhattan, is capturing the attention of not only a smitten growing fanbase but some of the most influential industry movers and shakers.
The Brooklyn based singer songwriter, who cites the likes of Sade, Sia, Lauryn Hill, Bjork, Radiohead, Fiona Apple and Imogen Heap as some of her influences, not only caught our attention with the stunning visuals (directed by Tommaso Cardile) for her Nina Simone “Feeling Good” channeling single and LP title track “The Way That I Feel”, but blew us away with her soulful yet sultry vocals and hypnotic melodies accentuated by the powerful musical soundbed.

Another highlight from her independently released album, which is an excellent blend of electronic, soul, blues, soft rock and jazz influences, is the chimerical “Cellophane Dreams” with it’s perfectly building soundbed accented by Ms Parente’s soothing vocals topped off with a stunning accompanying video.

Today, Brooklyn-based artist Danielle Parente gives us the premiere of her new video, "Make It Rain," from her latest album, Dark Eyes.
The album, Dark Eyes, is a journey through a romantic relationship, starting with lust and seduction then the falling in love stage. Eventually, we come to the end, letting go but still having only love for that person.
Such as the case of “Make It Rain”-- the Sage Atwood-produced song is about having an awareness of your ability to have power or influence over your surroundings. In the black and white clip, Danielle ventures around her Brooklyn hometown.
“Don’t hold on so tight sometimes you have to let it go / It will be alright just so long as you always know, I can make it rain, make it rain, make it rain all day,” she sings on the bridge.

Singer-songwriter Danielle Parente may have just released her sophomore full-length album, but the Brooklyn native is still very much getting her name out there. With Dark Eyes, however, it’s apparent that she’s going places.

The album opens with the title track, and while “Dark Eyes” isn’t among the record’s highlights, it’s certainly a solid song, and the trap-like beat is a great way to set the pace for the album. From there, however, the dancey “Wicked Game” really takes Parente’s sound to the next level. The momentum holds steady with “Very Last Breath (5 Minute Stares),” thanks in part to a hypnotizing hand-clapping backbeat. The brightness of “Make It Rain” complements the atomic drum cadence beneath it quite well. “Whirlwind,” “We Spin Round,” and “Over and Over” all seem to parallel one another, but nothing really stands out about any of them.

“Paint Me Black” starts out slow, before eventually gaining momentum, all the while maintaining the chilling atmosphere. The song’s dynamics and gradual build help solidify it as the highlight from the record. “Make Me Weak” adds guitars into the mix, helping give it a more rocking vibe, while an ethereal layering under “Walk Alone” holds it together. In some ways “Set Myself Free” is similar to the latter, but it lacks much of the oomph from its immediate predecessor. “Everest” is the relatively calm album closer that does a nice job of tying up the loose ends.

Dark Eyes is a solid effort from an intriguing up and coming artist. Danielle Parente blends the ambient with the soulful and the trippy with the sensuous, all rather effortlessly. The record definitely has its fair share of weaknesses, but as a whole it’s an enjoyable listen. Thanks to her latest, there’s no doubt in my mind that this New York-based singer-songwriter will continue to find her way into the speakers and headphones of eager listeners. - Tuned Up
