I love when I have the opportunity to cover a brand new artist here on City of Wind. As a writer, it's a breath of fresh air to be hit with something different, and it is always a true honor to use my platform to promote a brand new artist. Making their City of Wind debut on this frigid January evening is Curt Summers, with his heartfelt love jam "Celebrity."
The instrumental here is soulful and grief-stricken. The female vocals are layered nicely, and add a ton of depth throughout. There are some twinkly pianos that pluck away underneath, and the guitar chords add a nice melodic touch as well. There's a smokey saxophone solo towards the end of the track that ties everything up nicely.
Curt Summers gets busy on here. His bars walk a tightrope between poetic and emotive, weaving together the best of both worlds. He wears his heart on his sleeve, putting on full display his deep infatuation with a love interest. There isn't a ton of wordplay on here; only bar after bar of Summers peeling back layer after layer of his feelings, and it feels like he will never run out.
I must admit that Curt Summers is an artist I have been sleeping on for awhile. However, "Celebrity" should serve as a wake up call for not only myself, but Chicago's music scene at-large. With an instrumental that is deeply-layered and rich with musical elements, and an MC as passionate and eloquent as Curt Summers, "Celebrity" makes for an astounding listen.
"Celebrity" is now available on all platforms.

Bio
Meet Curt Summers - the passionate poet with a penchant for poignancy. Hailing from Egg Harbor City, NJ, this wordsmith was raised on Gospel, Soul, R&B and Classic Hip-Hop. Citing Tupac and early Kanye West as his biggest inspirations, yet being similarly influenced by the work of Langston Hughes, Walter Dean Myers, and Dr. Seuss, he realized early on that he possessed a rare gift for storytelling, innovative writing, and inspiration. His experience growing up in a single parent, lower-income household in an environment where many of his best friends succumbed to drug-dealing, gun violence, and the prison system, forced him to employ tunnel vision and work tirelessly to build a legacy that was bigger than his circumstances.
Through rap and poetry, he effortlessly narrates the desperation, paranoia, and despondence that urban life breeds; he offers the unique perspective of someone who equally obsesses over holding his people accountable to change, and battling with realities that certain uncontrollable factors create the mentalities that make change attempts futile.
After dedicating most of his time to athletics from middle school through his third year of college football, he fell back in love with music creation when he took a songwriting class with Professor Deanna Walker at Vanderbilt University. He has been actively recording since January 2017 and released his debut project titled “Here We Are” On October 5th, 2018. He recently released his heartfelt “Amour” EP and is gearing up to release a full LP “Chamomile” in the coming months. Ever inquisitive, cautiously optimistic, and courageously triumphant, this is Curt Summers.
