Out of the seething pool of cultural fusion that is Los Angeles, Bravesoul roots itself in the journey of two young men striking out, much like Robert Frost's protagonist in his famous poem, on a "road less traveled by".
Raised out of low income neighborhoods and a broken public school system, the pair managed to overcome all odds and eventually attend the hallowed chambers of Yale University. It was there that they first met, and it was in that unique flux of pomp and privilege that they honed their skills as writers and artists. Only a few years later, they would leave in pursuit of a dream to form a band with two old friends, in the place they would always call home -- the City of Angels.
Marty Rod, lead songwriter and guitarist for the band and a cutting-edge electronic producer, grew up in a home of actors and singers, so it comes as no surprise that he was singing, acting, and dancing since birth. In college, he split time between taking classes by day and working late nights at the recording studio. His hook-rich songwriting and inventive electronic production style would go on to be heard on numerous TV shows (Jersey Shore, X Games) and tracks by fellow pop/hiphop artists (Mike Stud, Kill Paris). Marty started jamming and writing with Eric Noble, bass player for Bravesoul, producer/groove artist, and creator of mad tales, while they were sophomores in college. Their shared penchant for blending musical genres and breaking rules as songwriters anchors a creative partnership that has produced multiple signed and unsigned projects, ultimately leading to the creation of Bravesoul in 2011. The name would come from a song that Marty wrote in 2009 about a young woman who lost her life and became a martyr in the student uprisings in Iran. As he recalled, "That song was a groundbreaking moment for me as an artist, because it was the first song I ever wrote that came from a place of absolute pure honesty and meaning. I hope it can serve as a reminder for us as a band to always strive for that in everything we do."
Bravesoul became complete with the addition of childhood friends Maxwell Breaux (Andy Grammar, Devon Gundry) on drums, and Jeff Kolhede (Balance And The Traveling Sounds, Allen Stone, Jacob Luttrell), a unique multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer. Together they forge an innovative sound using altered guitars, bass, percussion, and Jeff’s revolutionary manipulation of the EWI and Moog synthesizers. 2012 was a breakthrough year for the group: they independently released their first EP, The “Sideways Guide to Love”, with the help of famed producer Mikal Blue (Colbie Callat, OneRepublic), and a subsequent music video, “Keyhole”, which amassed more than 300,000 views in a 3 month period. They also headed a showcase at the annual ASCAP music showcase, won recognition for “Keyhole” at both the New Media Film Festival and Malibu Rock Awards, and continued to build a reputation as a hypnotic live act with sold-out shows in their hometown, including a residency at the Hotel Café in Hollywood. To support the recording of their first full-length album, Bravesoul was able to independently raise $10,000 through a successful Indiegogo campaign. With a new album, a massive live sound, and a growing audience, Bravesoul is poised for great things in 2013.
