After making their HNHH debut last week, Black COAL release their new mixtape THR-O-NE.

A couple of weeks ago, we introduced you to DMV trio Black COAL and their "Gold Gated Villa" banger. You guys seemed to enjoy it, so we wanted to bring you some more Black COAL with their brand new mixtape THR-O-NE (pronounced THREE OH ONE). "Gold Gated Villa" is on there, as well as a ton of other heat including the opening "Tha Introduction", which is really dope. The trio are making moves and building their fanbase, which shouldn't take too long with quality releases like this. After hitting us with the track “DMNDS” last month, Black Coal decides to keep it moving and return to the scene today with another freebie for the fans tonight titled “Unwind,” featuring crooner Lia Eliza.

Over the Jai Snipes-production, the group showcase their impressive wordplay and various flows/delivery, while rapping about their women and all that they’ll do to them. No word yet as for where this will end up yet, but it’s definitely got us eagerly anticipating the new project from the group, which we hope to hear soon. Black Coal is a rising hip-hop trio from Maryland that have a real grassroots following. They've only been putting out music for a little under a year now and without any sort of press have already accumulated 3.9 million plays on SoundCloud. Black COAL hit us with their impressive THR-O-NE tape last year, and since then, they've sporadically dropped a few gems. Today, we get yet another keeper with "DMNDS," a propulsive record that finds the three MCs racing against each other as the industrial drums clank along at a high BPM. That is, until it all falls apart and rebuilds in the final third, slowing down into a minimal stomp before a buzzing bassline slides in underneath.

DMV trio Black Coal make their HotNewHipHop debut today with "Gold Gated Villa." The catchy track features frequent Logic collaborator C Dot Castro and production from xXx. The song is a maze of wordplay and metaphors, as each emcee takes turns showing off their lyrical prowess. It's not hard to see why the DMV is producing some of the hottest up-and-coming artists in the game these days when we get dope songs like this.

HNHH premieres Black Coal's new mixtape: "Ski Masks & Diplomas."
DMV trio Black Coal are back with a new mixtape: Ski Masks & Diplomas, their first full release since last November's THR-O-NE. The trio is comprised of Yung Heat, C.T., and Jayy Tu-Wize. They each have their unique rapping styles, but the whole tape rides along with a cohesive feel, and it's easy to see these guys have been rapping together for a long time.

Ski Masks & Diplomas shows us a nuanced view of the DMV, exploring the conflicting dichotomies that Black Coal have had to live with. The 11-track release is full of deep wordplay, conceptual experiments, and, most importantly, bars filled with raw emotion. The eclectic beats come from a range of producers including Penacho, Tone Jonez, and Kid Flash.
