"Change Underground Interview"

How would you describe your style?

In short I would say it’s dark, melodic, and deep. It is built around a foundation of house and techno but melody and harmony are the most important things for me. I love incorporating acoustic instruments like pianos, organs, acoustic drums, and guitars. It is a blend a lot of influences, everything from classic rock to minimal techno.

How did you get into producing and how long did it take for you to get to the standard you are at now?

I first started producing rock based music about 7-8 years ago but I wasn’t really even aware that’s what I was doing. I wanted to record some songs that I had written so I bought a pretty basic set up. I would record guitars and vocals in my bedroom and then chop up drum loops to fit the track and use virtual instruments to fill it out. When I listen back to those early songs it makes me cringe a little because the mixing isn’t great, but it was a great learning experience.

After getting into electronic music, it still took a while to develop my own sound even though I already knew a lot about the technical aspects of producing. It has kind of come full circle in the sense that I’m back to focusing on the creative aspect of music creation like I was in the early days, but now the technical stuff is second nature and I don’t have to think about it.

Tell us about your DJ setup when you’re performing

I use a Reloop Mixon 4 with an iPad Pro running Algoriddm djay Pro. It’s a pretty unique setup but I really like it a lot, especially having the large touch screen. I’m comfortable on the standard CDJ/DJM set up as well.

You recorded a mix for our C-U Presents series. Is this a typical example of how you play?

Stylistically, yes for the most part. In a longer set I like to cover more space both in terms of style and energy. Of course it depends on the crowd, venue, time of day, etc.

What are you goals for the future and do you have any other things planned that you want to share?

Near term I have several tracks that I plan to release this year, two of which are in this mix. I’d like to play more shows and reach a bigger audience. Long term I’d like to grow my label by releasing tracks from other like-minded artists and to develop a hybrid live set up to allow for more improvisation and live jamming.

Finally what’s the one thing you love about this industry that keeps you hooked?

I’m not sure it’s the industry that keeps me hooked, but the music itself. I’ve been creating music in some form or another for over 10 years now and I love doing it as much today as I did the first time I picked up a guitar. Being able to create something with vibe, energy, and emotion out of nothing and then seeing other people react to it is the ultimate high for me. - Change Underground

When it comes to DJing I like to explore a lot of different styles especially in a longer set. Techno, House, Lofi, Disco, and Electro.
