New Hampshire native and Boston-based rapper Aziz released his most recent project, Tinderboxx, earlier today is the shit is tighter than dolphin vagina.

Packed with 10 carefully-crafted tracks with production from 2Astronauts, Hop Hobson, Decap, Sketcho, Eyesawu and features by Tayyib Ali, Ground Up and Mike Irving, the mixtape is pretty far-out from anything circulating now – no sub-par beats or empty hooks on this joint.

On the intro track to TwentyOne, Aziz unveils his latest work of art as “a journey through sounds and the growth of a genre, from the boom-bap rap roots, to the sound we have today in 2012. See what we doin’ here is, I’m givin’ ya’ll a verse over an industry record from every year that I’ve been alive.”

That’s the concept behind the 21-year-old rapper’s brand new mixtape released earlier today. Aziz, from New Hampshire but currently attending Brandeis University, dropped TwentyOne at noon after months of tireless work and preparation leading up to the release, and after a few listens through, I can honestly say that the execution lived up to, and maybe even exceeded, the incredible vision behind the project.

Anyone that’s been following Aziz already knew what TwentyOne was all about before today. I saw him open for J. Cole in Worcester back in October, and since that night that I heard him explain the concept live on stage, I’ve been highly anticipating what I’ve just known all along was going to end up an outstanding project.

Even those that didn’t have the pleasure of hearing Aziz explain the concept live probably caught wind of it through the catchy visuals released in the weeks leading up to today – both “The 1990s” and “The 2000s” teaser videos (see below).

TwentyOne is so simple, yet so creative. It can be summed up in just the one catchy tagline Aziz and his team has been using for the past month or so – “21 Beats. 21 Producers. 21 Years. 1 Journey Through Hip-Hop.” Aziz wanted to paint a picture of not just the history of hip-hop, not just the 21 years he’s been alive, but rather a combination of the two, weaving together music and meaning, art and life.

The result is a true time capsule of rap, one that I can relate to particularly well because like Aziz, I was born in 1990. Listening through TwentyOne, I really feel like I’m taking a journey through time. This mixtape has such a variety of sounds and tones, and Aziz went in on each track so tastefully and effectively that nothing ever feels overdone or over-the-top. While some people may have liked to hear a little more from Aziz on each track (in terms of number of bars/verses), I couldn’t be happier that he chose to keep each track short and sweet. The whole tape flows effortlessly from start to finish, and never once do I find myself reaching for the “next” button to skip a track.

As if the concept wasn’t creative enough, Aziz sprinkles clips from a 12-year-old him throughout the project to show just how long he’s been at this rap shit (like at the end of “1993 – Hip Hop Hooray”). TwentyOne isn’t just about bars, hell, it isn’t even just about music. This is intelligence, art, creativity, and history all bundled into a 22-track mixtape, and Aziz’s skills as a lyricist only add to the project’s appeal.

A few of my favorite tracks on here are “How High (1995),” “Full Clip (1999),” “Worst Comes To Worst (2001),” and “The Red (2003),” but really, there are no low points on TwentyOne. This is a mixtape that will be in steady rotation for a long time to come, and I don’t think I’m the only person that’s saying that.

Hats off to Aziz and his team for this production. This is a prime example of hard work and a clear vision paying off. Everyone that’s ever heard the 21-year-old rapper knows he can rhyme with the best of them, but TwentyOne is simply next level.

Well after a couple weeks of various leaks for this project, the day has finally come for Aziz to release his break-through mixtape – TwentyOne. This project sets Aziz apart from the crowd by showing what makes him unique, the music that has affected him over the last 21 years. He goes in on a various beat from 1990 to 2011, including one track for every year inbetween (you can only preview 18 of the 21 on the soundcloud though, so make sure to download the project).
