Over the past few months when an R&B artist would come in to Studio 1A, I would write something like “so-and-so is a great addition to Austin’s small but dedicated R&B scene.” At this point, however, the scene not that small and way more than dedicated, thanks in part to incredibly talented musicians like Alesia Lani. It’s been about 4 years since she decided to start focusing on music full time, and we’re all thrilled that she did. Her voice is kind of hard to pin down; it’s smooth and crystal clear, but at the same time it’s a little fuzzy around the edges, like your favorite vinyl that you’ve been playing every day since you were a kid. She released an Album in 2015, First Impression, and ever since has been stuck in our heads. Alesia Lani stopped by studio 1A to show us some of her self-written tunes, check them out below!

They had me at the soundcheck. It was super funky in a Solange-Janelle Monae like pop-rock — emphasis on the rock — kind of way. You could hear the professional quality of each member’s musicianship. They opened with a Lenny Kravitz cover that, honestly, the legend himself would have approved. It was a cold, crisp night at Red Eyed Fly about two years ago when was first introduced to an unknown, sensational voice by Street Alumni Entertainment’s Reno Dudley. The natural beauty of Alesia Lani’s presence had me instantly tangled in her performance. Who is this? Why have I never met R&B’s next superstar? I’m sure Reno knew exactly the conversation I was playing out in my head given he leaned in and told me to introduce myself to her. Nervous I was about to approach R&B’s next diva, Alesia’s touch was soothing with a genuine smile that has the ability to melt any heart. “You remind me of an early Alicia Keys!” was the first thing to leave my mouth, I didn’t know what else to say. Alesia’s reaction made me feel like that was the first time she ever received such a compliment, although she stated she gets that all the time, but somehow she made my first impression special. Though our relationship from there remained humble, I still had no clue who was the woman behind such a mountain-like poise.

Fast forward to dinner at Baby A’s some time January 2015; my chance finally arrived. I couldn’t help but to feel excitement when I saw Mama Lani walk up to our table with Baby Lani right beside her. Their aura was warm, perfect for the cold night coming our way. Before we got to the juicy questions I had lined up for our interview, Alesia Lani anxiously reached out her ear buds to her iPhone. Unaware I’d have the opportunity to listen to a select few songs from First Impression on the spot, I quickly reached for her offer. For the next 20 minutes, I was lost in a trance full of love, heartbreak and butterflies; all emotions of which I am too familiar. One song in particular stood out, Lost Endeavor, a song Alesia told me she wrote and recorded years ago. There was nothing else in that moment that could rip me away from my connection with her passion. This instantly became a favorite in my book. I was struck by the restaurant’s bright beams once I finally raised the curtains from my eyes; I wasn’t ready to leave. Although very thankful for freedom to have a sneak peek, I was ready to get started. But for the rest of our Baby A’s experience, I forgot about my notes and simply enjoyed the company of both ambitious ladies. We agreed to reschedule our interview, for the night began to progress. Honored to be so trusted, I accepted Alesia Lani’s invitation to continue our long session the next evening at her engineer’s private studio, the last night of her recording of First Impression.

I was unaware of the recording process for singers, so I kept my mind open and sat comfortably on the oversized suede-covered couch. About halfway through Alesia’s vigorous vocal exercises, I realized this was no time for questioning; I was there to experience Alesia Lani. And experience, I did.

Her emotions tossed me around in her waves as she pulled the strength to place the final touches on First Impression. Alesia expressed her urge to complete her first project so she may finally share her story with the world. She was ready to move forward with her music. Curious as to how she decided on the title for her debut album, Alesia had no straight direction as to how she wanted to formulate a concept, “Over the year’s I’ve just written so much music and been through hell and back. First Impression is all of me for everyone to see.” I love this young artist’s fierce approach to life because it really does reflect in her choice of music. Her confidence on stage, in the studio and away from the rest of the world is admirable across the board. Her voice is raw, her demeanor so real, I now new listeners will have the same first impression as I did two years ago in front of that red-lit stage. The roller coaster ride Alesia Lani encounters is no different from the one you and I take, but she has a way of assuring us we are not alone, and is in my opinion what will truly touch her fans for years to come.

Bringing soulful sounds, Alesia Lani takes us back to the heart of music. Classified under the Neo-Soul, R&B and Hip-Hop, Lani definitely gives us an earful. Her single "Sunshine" highlights her soulful appeal, while her other songs like "Getaway" and "The Way" capture her R&B/Hip-hop attitude.


Born a Midwesterner and raised Texan, Lani's unique voice could fill and silence a room. She worked on multiple singles such as "Ghost", "Problem Child" and many other artists. When Lani turned 18, she broadened her artistic experience by modeling in music videos including “Walk with a Dip” by Baby Bash and Charlie boy's “On My Momma.” She's also been featured in PeaCe's "Contradictions."

Now, Lani is a solo artist who is only gaining momentum with recent release of album “First Impressions”. Her solo career start is reminding us of sounds like Billie Holiday, Chrisette Michele and John Legend (not a bad beginning). Noble Enterprise Records released this lovely song featuring Austin’s soul singer Alesia Lani. I had the pleasure of witnessing Lani’s raw talent at a house showcase during SXSW and she has such a pretty voice. Alesia Bolden, better known in the entertainment industry as Alesia Lani (Lah-nee) is not your average 20 year old. Each chorus more sultry than the last. Following every earth-shattering vibrato, Alesia Lani managed to crack a smile peering thought the fluorescent stage lights, entertaining a packed house at Stay Gold. Each song possessed a soul of its own. Smooth and jazzy, funky and bluesy, Alesia Lani’s KeyzStreet Band maneuvered through changes and tempos like molten rock propelling through the earth, and soothing the rigid mountain edges with its fiery magma. It was hot, and it was smooth.

Her performance was nothing short of breath-taking. Her set was a throwback to my time in Chicago attending some great jazz and blues shows at the legendary Green Mill, and Kingston Mines. She finished her set with one of her newest, and unreleased songs, “Celebration.”

After the finale, a rousing ovation ensued, and rightfully so. Did we just witness a star in the making? Reno Dudley, the co-founder of KeyzStreet Music, stunned me with an enthusiastic slap on my back as if what we just witnessed was a genie spilling out of a bottle. A great place to catch her sizzling performance will be July 9th at Empire Control Room. I suggest you bring a chinstrap before your jaw hits the floor.

Controversy erupted on Austin music scene Facebook pages over the weekend when a band full of white dudes with an inflammatory name that references black women’s genitalia had their show at Hotel Vegas cancelled following a social media backlash related to the band’s name. This post is not about that. Instead, we’re dedicating the brain space we could use analyzing whether it’s ironic or sexist for male artists to use mis-gendered band names and whether it’s really worth fighting for the right to upset black women to celebrate some of the fine black female talent rising through the ranks of the Austin music scene.
