"Alek Fin - 'Án Mynda' (EP stream) (premiere)"

The brainchild of Los Angeles artist Adam Finkel, Alek Fin specializes in electronic music that straddles gentle pop, adult contemporary, with just enough experimentation to give it enough edginess. The twitchiness of Thom Yorke, the smoothness of James Blake, and the crooning of Patrick Watson, if you will.

Three years after the debut EP Mull, we finally have some new Alek Fin music to tout, and you can listen to his new EP Án Mynda below.

“‘Án Mynda’ is the Icelandic translation of ‘without form’ or ‘without generation’,” Finkel explains. “It’s a concept inspired by my step-father Charlie who passed away just after Mull was released. I wanted to explore the idea of transitioning between this life and the next. Although there is a melancholy nature to these tracks I wanted each of them to be equally as hopeful.” - Pop Matters

"PREMIERE: Alek Fin Shares Dark, Grooving New Track “Golden, Blinding” (feat. Galun)"

LA’s Alek Fin (aka Adam Finkel) may be an electronic musician, but his newest track “Golden, Blinding” was made almost entirely with the human voice.

It started when the Moscow-based producer Galun sent him a beat made solely from vocal percussion, and from there, Fin took the idea and ran with it. “[Galun’s beat] inspired me to use vocals as the primary textures and make things as organic as possible,” Fin said in a press release.

The result is a brooding, slow-burning groove that channels the subdued production and vocal stylings of James Blake. “Golden, Blinding” comes ahead of Finkel’s second EP, Án Mynda, which is due out later this year. "Premiere: ALEK FIN - Án Mynda"

It has been a long time between drinks for Californian electronic producer Adam Finkel (ALEK FIN), with his debut Mull EP being released all the way back in 2012. Since that time, we have seen Finkel put out a couple of remixes and feature on collaborations with German producer Robot Koch for Berlin label Project Mooncircle, and it seems that their time together has given ALEK the inspiration to begin work on a follow-up release, the first taste of which we are featuring for you today with the title track from his upcoming sophomore EP, Án Mynda.

Each understated element, from the spectral vocals, to the layered skittering of percussion, eschew extravagance, and they add a poignant texture to the overall composition. What that means, in layman’s terms, is that that piece is one that’s truly exceptional.

Apart from his aforementioned collaborative work, ALEK FIN has also been busy working on his live gig, so if you’re enjoying the sounds he’s offering here, be sure to keep an eye out for the premiere of his live show after the release of his Án Mynda EP later in the year. - HillyDilly

"Introducing: Alek Fin"

Alek Fin has been making impressions on the electronic scene since 2010, winning Radiohead’s Philip Selway’s Indaba Remix Contest with his minimalist twist on ‘Beyond Reason’. With a fervent belief that ‘less is more’, Alek is back with impressive new EP Mull, self-released last month. Mull acts as an ethereal journey through stunningly developed soundscapes, captivating and beautiful in its ultimate simplicity. Deceivingly developed layering weaves its way amongst soothingly sparse interludes with a sophistication hailing to the likes of Thom Yorke and James Blake, indicating great things to come for the blossoming producer. After listening to the EP a few times, Mull seems to work best as a body of ideas. It’s hard to break one song from another; Mull marks Alek finally making a confident stride amongst his musical peers. - Music Broke My Bones

"Alek Fin - Mull EP"

Finding the balance between an ambient, intrinsic sound and one of those ‘Sound of The Sea’ CDs you get in the post every now and again can be a difficult task to master. Not many perfect the technique, I’ve shed tears of pure boredom while half way through an album meant to create a ‘chilled’ atmosphere with its ‘minimalistic’ production.

This is where Los Angeles’ electronic artist Alek Fin comes in. With the ‘Mull EP’ Fin perfects the balance between a relaxed and ambient sound without losing any richness or texture sonically. His voice compliments the tranquil sounds perfectly, letting the production of the tracks take the front seat in a way slightly reminiscent of Thom Yorke‘s solo work. The result is a really quite stunning four track EP that captivates your mind, demonstrates real artistry and innovates a sound sometimes tired out over the years. - Bang Tidy Music

"alek fin - mull ep"

A brilliant blend of live and electronic music. Alek Fin really demonstrates an ability to nail it when it comes to atmosphere. Mull EP takes a lot of influence from contemporary electronic musicians such as Flying Lotus, James Blake, and Nicholas Jaar, but taking the sound a rather different direction. The EP floats effortlessly through its 20 minutes, echoing & shimmering in the process. EP title track “Mull” feels very spaced out, with it’s shore like synth and plodding bass, whilst “Rocks In Paper”, is slightly more grounded by its drum lead pattern. Mull EP isn’t too far of a soundtrack, it’s whole structure and pace could be easily be set to a melancholic scene of some sort. The EP single “Waiting like a Wolf” is not far off Thom Yorkes more leftfield escapades, and actually reminds me of a Holy Fuck remix of Nude, except more melodic and dreamy. To summarise you should listen to this EP, and then again, until you feel like your life is a melancholic slow motion film short. Really great EP, I look forward to more. - Real Horrorshow Tunes

"Alek Fin - Waiting Like A Wolf"

Damn, Alek Fin has caught my attention in a big way. All it took was one listen to “Waiting Like A Wolf”, a track from his soon to be released Mull EP. Fans of electronic Thom Yorke-influenced Radiohead gather around, I found a new late-night friend for you. - We All Want Someone To Shout For

"Alek Fin: Waiting Like A Wolf"

Winter in a song. Alek Fin captures the panache of coldness with his new release, Waiting Like A Wolf. And all of the song’s ghostly layers reveal a huntsman that which listeners can’t escape. The mirage of vocals over simple acoustic and soft electronics are key sounds where Fin has clearly marked his territory. - Trendland

"Listen: Alek Fin: "Waiting Like A Wolf""

"Waiting For A Wolf" is a haunting voyage through a surreal, ethereal landscape, one that feels simply spellbinding. And despite drawing most of its strength from atmospheric beauty, there's a magnetic sense of melody in the mix, as well. It's a cerebral electronic piece that still finds a way to be incredibly emotional. - Mixtape Muse

"Premiere: Alek Fin - Mull EP"

In 2012, electronic music played a huge role in the mainstream, but it was often in the more experimental leaning sounds where things got interesting. Instead of the in-your-face synths and that notorious drop, Alek Fin chooses to go the route of guys like James Blake and Nicolas Jaar. On his Mull EP, the negative space is one of the most important elements, and leaving that room to breathe allows the songs on this EP to unfold like scenes in a movie. In only four songs, all under six minutes, the EP swells, sinks, floats, and erupts with a finely-tuned consciousness. - Pigeons and Planes

"[Electronica] Alek Fin – Mull EP"

Last month we featured Los Angeles electronic artist Alek Fin, calling his single “Waiting Like A Wolf” frenetic yet so calming. The same can actually be said about his entire Mull EP, which came out just a few weeks ago. From start to finish it’s very ambient and lulling, but don’t mistake its quietness for monotony — there’s hardly ever a dull or uninspired moment. Its sensitive, warm aura is complemented nicely by the sprinkling of little quirky surprises that jump out at you briefly. The result is an exquisite four-track collection that you can really ease into, and one that paints a lovely and soft-colored sonic landscape. - The Music Ninja
