Power pop is a style of music that doesn't seem very prevalent in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. region, but I discovered two local bands working hard to fill that void. Both Ape House and Headstraight are carrying the power pop torch in the region with their great music...
...Baltimore's Headstraight has a slightly darker sound than Ape House, but the power pop formula is still evident. The band just put out an EP called Buried to showcase its sound and the three tracks are very impressive. Of particular note is the grungy "Not Enough." This song sounds like it was pulled from Soundgarden's material from the early 90's.... Both bands are making great music and are worth checking out....

Bio
The music of Washington, DC-based rock band Alex Clark presents a powerful array of pop and rock influences. Founder and frontman Alex Clark has written a variety of guitar-driven tunes that evoke a combination of 80s pop and 90s rock, with catchy choruses, and pop-inflected harmonies. Lyrically, Clark's songs cover a range of subjects--from the anguish of love ("Hey Sorry"); to the banality of life ("Nothing to Do"); to the struggles of making it in the music industry ("It's Not Enough"). Together these influences coalesce into a sound that is altogether current and accessible and dangerous and threatening too. Feel it.
