Attik Door

Dressed in all black, minus that purple shade of MAC lipstick, and pissed off at the world. You stand behind the cash register at your part-time hospitality job because you’ve painfully realized that artistic occupations just don’t pay enough. You glare through the shop’s glass at every potential costumer with the secret hope that they don’t come in because that would force you to greet them with a cheerfully fake welcome, when all you really want to say is “fuck off.”

Brainless questions and remarks like, “what do you recommend?” or “I’m looking for something yummy” turn your pupils into flames, and suddenly you wish you could set people on fire just by looking at them. We all have days (or weeks) like this, and the fact that your boss claims you have resting-bitch-face doesn’t help improve matters either. You’re not even on your period.

Cranky times call for cranky measures. Like the time I blasted Three Days Grace’s single “I Hate Everything About You” from my room, with the door wide open, so my parents downstairs knew exactly how I felt about them for denying me a sleepover. Overdramatic? Yes. But it did make me feel better.

Now, as a grown up, I handle matters the same way, except I’d play Attik Door’s album Never In Agreement. Nothing like the voice of a bitter female to keep shop costumers away. Think Joan Jett meets Gwen Stefani — an old school Gwen Stefani, not the Harajuku Girls version. Attik Door’s vocalist, Liana Tovmasyan drags you down into a tunnel of attitude, finger pointing, and essentially hating everyone with her opening hit, “Posers.”

Although, you were probably headed down that rabbit hole to begin with. Misery loves company; so what’s the point in complaining if there’s nobody around to listen? Let Liana stand on the receiving end of your hateful words. She can take it and dish it like no other. Attik Door emerged on the scene in 2011, with noise makers and ground-stompers such as Led Zeppelin and System of a Down as their inspiration.

Let’s say two girls — two best friends no less — come into the shop for a post-workout treat, regardless of the unmasked DO NOT ENTER look in your eyes, and KEEP AWAY attitude with your crossed arms and zipped-up-to-the-neck oversized black hoodie. Are you even going to be able to hear their order with Attik Door’s two guitarists blaring from the speakers? Sorry, guys, the music’s too loud and there’s no way to turn it down so you’ll have to come back another time — or burn in hell, whichever comes first.

With every individual riff that comes from the intro to “Spinning Out,” imagine those besties falling further and further into the pits of Hell and you’ll instantly feel better. Besides playing from the speakers during your opening shift, you can catch Attik Door perform live around California at shows such as Oakland First Fridays, SubZero Festival, and Red Marines Festival. On Sunday, March 1, Attik Door will be in the L.A. Area at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood.

Hard hitting and packed with 10 awesome tracks, Attik Door’s new album Never in Agreement prepares the band to launch to a wider audience.

The band are a gathering of eclectic tastes and influences from the former USSR, currently based out of San Francisco. Guitarist Alex Shrayber has taken Attik Door to new heights, playing venues up and down the West Coast. The band is rounded out by vocalist Liana Tovmasyan, Margarita Grabarova on bass, Igor Boyko on drums with Tim Shulepov also on guitars.

Among the 10 songs on Never in Agreement, there are some stellar standouts. “Bleed” is a ferocious song and showcases a Rage Against the Machine-type of delivery and messaging. “The Front” has vocalist Tovmasyan sounding almost exactly like Gwen Stefani, particularly in her No Doubt days. “California” ebbs and flows in a truly California way with Tovmasyan’s voice revealing another powerful style. “Time” is a huge stadium song, demonstrating that Attik Door can very well hold their own at large venues.

Even though she’s got an amazing voice, Tovmasyan may want to pull back from the Stefani side of her vocal skills. Stefani is her own brand and some distance might benefit the group. Attik Door and Tovmasyan are way too talented to get stuck into a soundalike category. Mining their native roots might give the band some leverage to push past the horde storming the hard rock and alternative metal fronts.

That is not to say that Never in Agreement isn’t a great album. It’s a superb feat of songwriting and composing with an explosive and face-pealing result. - Scallywag Magazine

Emerging in early 2011, Attik Door encompasses a variety of musical styles to create a unique hard rock / alternative sound. They draw inspiration from a wide range of artists from Led Zeppelin and System of a Down to Sade and Black Eyed Peas, and forge a unique sound of melodic and heavy riffs in equal measure. The band members all come from various corners of the former USSR, and the songs are predominantly done in English, ensuring as wide of an audience as possible. Now situated in San Francisco, the band is lead by solo guitarist Alex, the band consists of Liana Tovmasyan on vocals, Margarita Grabarova on bass, Tim Shulepov on rhythm guitar and Igor Boyko on the drums.

Tovmasyan has a touch of Gwen Stefani in her vocals, along with a hint of Kumi from Love Psychedelico which sounds great on this album with the slightly poppier sound mixed with the rocking out from the band. The songs have a ton of energy and you can definitely hear that they are having a great time playing them, and that really gives the album a great feel that makes for repeated listens. “Posers” has a great hard rock sound that never lets you go, and that carries over to “Bleed” which is one of the highlights of the album. “California” is a bit slower, but not really a ballad, just a great mixture of slow and fast beats that have that Love Psychedlico feel to it, but a bit harder rocking in parts. “Snorting Headlines” brings back the heavy sound and keeps it going right into “Cyber World.” The album ends with “Time,” the closest Tovmasyan gets to sounding like Gwen Stefani, but with no sound of ska, just a thick rock sound. The band really plays their hearts out, heavy, soft and with power and a skill that leaves you wanting more.

Definitely a great album that shows the depth of their abilities and really gets the feet moving, and makes you wonder how they would sound in a live setting. This is the kind of band that I crave to find in my neck of the woods playing, but I never seem to get that lucky. (Rick Ecker) - New Noise Magazine
