FAIRBANKS — “Look At Me (Hand Hygiene),” a video made in Alaska promoting hand washing, won a film festival competition at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Providence Alaska Medical Center announced.
The conference took place last week in Portland, Oregon.
The “Look at Me” song was written by and performed by former Providence caregiver Andre Blaack Williams, who is now a recording artist based in Atlanta, and features Providence Alaska caregivers and family members.
Providence’s music video outlines “wet, lather, scrub, rinse, dry” as the basic steps for hand hygiene and infection prevention and stresses that 20-to-25 seconds of washing is needed to achieve clean hands.

Maybe you've heard this song. It starts with a military cadence that runs into a beat. Then a woman's voice floats through the hook, singing, "When you come home." Then come the rhymes:
Some soldiers that's in Iraq don't really know why they there /
Don't really know why they fightin' so really why would they care /
All they know is that's a year separated from peers /
Come home and they little kid might not even know who they is.
It was the most-requested song playing on KFAT 92.9 for the first two weeks of August. That wouldn't be a big deal except the performer is a local rapper named Blaack. According to the station, a local artist has never held the No. 1 spot like that before.

Blaack is also known as Andre Williams Jr. He's a former Army sergeant who works nights coordinating events for SMG, a local event management company. He's 26.

A hand hygiene music video from Anchorage-based Providence Health & Services Alaska instructing hospital staff, patients and visitors to "wet, lather, scrub, rise, dry" won the seventh annual Film Festival at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology Annual Conference.
The rap video titled "Look at Me" encourages everyone to wash their hands in the name of infection prevention. "Do you really want to wake up with a cough, all because of some germs that you could've washed off?" raps the lead singer.
The video also instructs everyone to wash their hands for 20 seconds or longer.
"Utilizing a music video format to provide an overview of hand hygiene best practices is a great way to disseminate our most important infection prevention intervention," said Timothy Wiemken, PhD, chair of the APIC 2017 Annual Conference. "Providence's video is such an amazing addition to the Film Festival winner's circle, and their creation can be used as a unique tool to drive home the importance of hand hygiene."
Other videos in the Film Festival include "We're All About Those Hands!" a parody of Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" from Painesville, Ohio-based Lake Health, and "Infectious Funk," an "Uptown Funk" parody from Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown, W.Va.

‘Look at Me’ (Hand Hygiene) recognized for emphasizing proper hand-washing techniques for staff, patients
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) announced Providence Health & Services Alaska as the winner of its seventh annual film festival competition during APIC’s 44th Annual Conference Wednesday, June 14, in Portland, Ore.
The video entitled, “Look At Me (Hand Hygiene),” emphasizes proper hand-washing techniques for hospital staff and visitors.
The ‘Look at Me’ song was written by and features the vocals of former Providence caregiver Andre Blaack Williams, who is now a recording artist based in Atlanta. The video features Providence Alaska caregivers and family members.
“We are honored to be recognized for the hard work that went into making this fun and educational video,” said Rebecca Hamel, RN, manager of Infection Prevention at Providence Alaska Medical Center. “One of the best things about the ‘Look at Me’ song and video is that it features the diversity of our caregivers all working together to share the message of how clean hands save lives.”
Providence’s music video draws attention to the importance of thorough and consistent hand washing, stressing that 20-25 seconds is needed to achieve clean hands. The video outlines “wet, lather, scrub, rinse, dry” (W.L.S.R.D.) as the basic steps for hand hygiene and infection prevention.
“Seeing hand hygiene best practices demonstrated in a music video is an entertaining and simple way to prevent infection and help the viewer grasp the domino effect of unclean hands in a health care facility,” said Timothy Wiemken, PhD, MPH, CIC, APIC 2017 Annual Conference chair. “Providence’s standout video is an excellent addition to the film festival winner’s circle and is a useful tool to drive home the importance of hand hygiene.”

Artist Information Andre Blaack
Born Andre Williams, Jr, on August 1, 1984, in Frankfurt, Germany. Son of Andre Williams Sr and Barbara Cade in Tignall, Georgia; the oldest of seven children, Andre learned early on the skills necessary to survive on very little living in with his mom in Black Bottom on Anderson Street. Due to family problems in 1994 Andre Blaack and his younger brother (Quinn) moved to Alaska to live with their father. 1998- 2000, As a teenager, the negative influences of the streets were very strong in Blaack's life.
By age 16, Andre had not only lost his mother, but also his grandmother and one of his younger brothers all of which had lived on Black Bottom Street in Tignall Georgia. To honor their memory, Blaack decided to adopt the street name as his alias. Although the original street name was Black Bottom, Blaack decided to make it more distinct by adding an extra letter to differentiate the color and recognize Anchorage Alaska as his home also. Andre "Blaack."
At the age of 17 Andre' enlisted in the Army. By 2004 he was deployed for one year to Salerno, Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom). Being a natural leader, Blaack rapidly achieved the rank of E-5 (Sergeant). After leaving the military in 2006, he decided to return to Georgia where he stayed on Anderson Street for 3 years. 2009 he decided that moving back to Anchorage, Alaska would be the only way for him to turn his life around and find stability. Because Blaack has spent half his life in Georgia and half in Alaska, he feels his music does not represent just one specific area. In 2012 Andre' decided that he would only make positive music. Music that all ages of listeners could would not only enjoy but find very uplifitng as well. Today his music can be described as a twist of the south with up north lyrics. Blaack's music tells a story that is expressive, versatile and real. A story that will inspire and leave you thoroughly entertained.
