Hi Amsi, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi! Thank you so much for having me. New name, new decade, new me, I am doing great!
You recently had to change your name would you like to elaborate on that?
Yes, my name is still Kash amongst my friends, but my stage name is now Amsi. I loved Kash as a stage name and when I found out I had to change it, it truly broke my heart, but I knew it was the right thing for me to do. I have all these dreams that I want to pursue and if I kept the name Kash, I could potentially run into major issues in the future. I didn’t want to jeopardize that over something I could fix in the moment. For all you indie artists out there reading this: copyright and trademarks are your friend, not your enemy. They protect you, your business, and your art.
How does it feel being Amsi now?
I feel incredibly humbled being Amsi. It is the last four letters of my last name, which is pretty empowering. Usually women drop their last name when they get married and now I have found a way to carry my family name in my art. Also, according to the interwebs, Amsi actually means embodiment of the universe, so to uphold such a name makes me feel super grateful.
Who are some of your musical influences?
I have a lot of musical influences ranging from Indian artists like Arjit Singh & Raja Kumari to pop stars like Charli XCX, Beyoncé, & Halsey. Right now, I’d have to say my biggest musical influence is Bebe Rexha. Her vocal range, her songwriting style, are all things that resonate with me and my music. She is one of the best in the business and I really do look up to her.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single Catch Me at the Top?
Yes! Yes! Yes! I am so excited about this new single you have no idea! I have been sitting on this one for so long! It is a fusion of my cultural background with a more pop flavor and I could not be prouder of how it sounds. I cannot wait for everyone to hear it on December 13!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
There wasn’t a particular event that sparked this idea, but there were several events leading up to it if that makes sense. Since I have an Indian and Muslim background, culturally it isn’t considered appropriate for me to pursue a career in music. I have received unsolicited advice from numerous people in my life telling me not to do what I am doing, and I finally was just fed up. This song allowed me to let that energy out and allowed me to say the things I never could out loud.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Hehe. I may have something in the works, but it honestly comes down to what the people want.
How was the recording and writing process?
Recording and writing was really simple, actually. My producer, Avanti, sent me the track and I was immediately drawn to it, and within 15 minutes I had the melody and lyrics down. When we hit the studio, we refined everything, and just like that Catch Me at the Top was born.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else or rather than working on your own?
I actually do take a different approach, because when I am alone I don’t have anyone really inputting their opinion on what I am writing. It is always just based on my opinion about what I think sounds good. When you are collaborating with someone you have to take into consideration their art as well as our own, so you can’t be so forthright initially until you have developed a solid relationship. It is really important to acknowledge that because at the end of the day everyone has different tastes and different styles. It is honestly what makes this process so beautiful because it brings together people who might visualize a song differently, but still find commonality in liking the song.
What role does New York play in your music?
New York is such a wild place. It is honestly, so inspirational because there are so many different people around you. You can sit in the train and the conversations you over hear can spark a lyric, or a sound that you hear can inspire a melody. It’s amazing how you can literally create music while simply just taking the city in.
What do you want people to take away from your music?
I want people to be walking down the street and listen to one of my songs and feel a sense of confidence. I want them to feel bold and empowered, the same way I feel when making music.
Any upcoming shows?
I have a birthday show coming up called “NAME DAY,” at Rise Radio in Brooklyn. This will be the first time I am performing as Amsi, which I am so stoked about! We also have an amazing lineup that includes Unomi, Cortezzz, & Mama Blue.
