New music from the newly minted duo, All Day (Preemo + Tawn P). Their brand of music is steeped in classic hip-hop: verve, lyrics, soul by the pound, that good ol’ Tribe vibe with a modern pep. I like. - The Rap Up
“Some would say hip-hop originated within a marginalized subculture in the South Bronx amongst black and latino youth during the 1970s in New York City. Look at what you have here: A black female artist and Latino male artist.”
Adequate words from Tawn Péron, who along with Preemo (real name Aaron Manuel Beltrán), form Houston duo AllDAY. The two were at different areas of their careers individually before forming last year. Tawn P earned enough of a local buzz as a rapper/singer to make
About.com’s 2012 Top 10 Houston Rappers To Watch, among other accolades. Around the same time, Preemo had become the area’s premier MC thanks to his projects Concrete Dreams and The Magic Bullet respectively, making The Houston Press’s best of list in both 2010 and 2011. A chance meeting between the two would eventually began the making of Houston’s most talked about duos.
After spending much time performing and teasing a project since forming AllDAY, the twosome dropped three critically-acclaimed EPs this year through The Breakfast, The Brunch and The LunchBreak EP. According to the duo, a full length album was in the works and 40 songs were recorded over the course of a year. The decision to separate the project into three separate EPs came from losing momentum as Preemo was tragically shot in the abdomen as he attempted to visit a friend’s house this summer. Following a long and grueling recovery, breaking up the album seemed like a wise choice.
“Well, originally we were going to release a full LP with 24 tracks, but after my shooting and subsequent recovery time we lost a lot of momentum,” said Preemo. “We decided instead to break up the album into smaller EPs and release one once a month over the course of five months to spread out the promo time.”
It seems to have worked out quite well considering the praise all three smaller projects received. Elements of golden era hip-hop, soul and contemporary sounds has elevated the EPs to one of the year’s best independent releases. According to Preemo, the goal was to show their eclectic taste on all fronts. “We have so much musical influence that it would be impossible for us to drop just one sound, or one type of record, over and over,” Preemo added. The colors change from soul to hip-hop to R&B back to boom bap effortlessly.”
And it’s only the beginning. Alongside making MTV UK’s 2013 Rappers To Watch List, AllDAY has earned some song placements in the upcoming All Cheerleaders Die film. It’s only the beginning for the duo, as Tawn P said they’ll “continue to do this AllDay until we go global.” - SoulTrain.com
Hip-hop, like any genre, changes and evolves, but one thing you could always count on (at least until the early part of the last decade) was the notion of the hip-hop group. When you look at MTV's rankings of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time, you'd have a hard time finding any group -- hell, one group -- today that could even stand amongst the list's honorable mentions with a straight face.
Perhaps we are in the era of individuality. And that's okay. Maybe this era of hip-hop artists didn't grow up learning how to share their toys in the sandbox, but if there's a valuable lesson we could all be reminded of by looking at MTV's list, it's that some of hip-hop's greatest works were put out by...groups.
There was something incredibly enticing about the contrast of lyrical delivery and sound of say, UGK -- Bun B's deep vocals next to Pimp C's high-pitched country twang. And there was something very comforting about knowing that you could count on that consistency of those two teaming up on every record.
So it was refreshing to hear that two of Houston's most talented underground artists, Preemo and Tawn P, were teaming up to form a hip-hop group called All Day. They have both had their share of success in the scene.
Preemo's Concrete Dreams and The Magic Bullet were No. 2 and No. 10 on Rocks Off's lists of Houston's best rap albums in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
Tawn P's The Wake Up Kiss made it to No. 7 on the 2011 rankings. She also was No. 6 on About.com's 10 Houston Rappers to Watch in 2012.
Rocks Off's Shea Serrano once described her as "jagged and aggressive and smoldering," which is true. Match that up with Preemo's silky-smooth, high-as-a-kite lyrical delivery and you have some pretty incredible chemistry.
Rocks Off got a sneak-peak listen to "I Just Wanna Piece" off All Day's upcoming album, which is about 30 percent done. If that's any indication of what's to come, then the Houston rap scene is going to have a lot to talk about with the pairing of these two artists.
History has proven to repeat itself. Let's hope All Day. - HoustonPress
