"University Students, Band Members Win Ziegfest ‘Battle of the Bands,” Earn Spot to Open Music Festival"

November 05, 2013

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – University student Adam Hollaway and former University student Jake Ward, and their band, The Elise, won the 2013 Ziegfest Battle of the Bands, which earned them a spot to open the 11th annual Ziegfest music festival held October 25 at Whataburger Field in downtown Corpus Christi.

The process was long and the competition was tight, but Hollaway, drummer; Ward, lead singer; Derek Galvan, bass player; and Paul Teltschik, lead guitarist, edged above competitors to claim the title of 2013 Ziegfest Battle of the Bands champions.

“Winning the contest and getting to play at Ziegfest was a crazy experience,” said Ward. “We are all really blessed to have gotten the opportunity and are so thankful for it.”

The first-phase of the competition included approximately 20 bands that had to promote themselves using social media to accumulate as many online votes as possible. The four bands with the highest number of votes were invited to play at the second-phase, a 30-minute set at the 2013 Battle of the Bands at Brewster Street Ice House, on October 2.

During the Ziegfest music festival, The Elise opened ahead of Kevin Fowler, the Casey Donahew Band, Reckless Kelly and Uncle Lucius; all notable figures in Texas country music. You can follow The Elise on Facebook to get information on upcoming shows and appearances.

"A great day of Texas country"

By Kimberly Vetter
Special to the Caller-Times
The 11th annual Ziegfest
Music Festival at Whataburger
Field is returning to its roots
Friday with a lineup of promi-
nent Texas country artists.
“We are excited about the
entertainment this year,” said
Matt Motl, marketing and op-
erations assistant with Ryan
Sanders Baseball. “We are re-
ally getting back to what we
are all about.”
Kevin Fowler, who described
his music as country with a bad
attitude, will headline with one
of his signature high-energy
performances.
The Amarillo native said
he would play some of his
unforgettable numbers such
as “Beer, Bait and Ammo”
and “Cheaper to Keep Her” as
well as some songs from his
new album, “How Country
Are Ya?”
Although he’s played several
Ziegfest events across Texas,
Fowler said he’s never per-
formed at the one in Corpus
Christi and is excited .
“It sounds like it’s going to
be a great day of Texas coun-
try,” he said. “I hope every-
body comes out and has a good
time.”
debuted at No. 7 on Billboard
Country Albums.
Reckless Kelly, which strad-
dles the fence between coun-
try and rock, was formed in
Oregon but moved to Austin
in 1997.
The band recently released
its eighth album, “Long Night
Moon.” The album is the
follow-up to 2011’s Grammy-
against several other South
Texas musicians during Brew-
ster Street Ice House’s Battle of
the Bands.
The Elise’s lead vocalist and
rhythm guitarist Jake Ward
said winning the contest and
getting to play at Ziegfest is
“all very exciting and almost
surreal.”
The opportunity to play in
The Elise’s lead vocalist said getting to play at Ziegfest is “all very exciting and almost surreal.”The opportunity to play in
front of such a big audience
is a big break for the budding
southern alternative rock
band, he said.
“We hope people come out
and hear us,” Ward said.
Motl said the local band
would kick of Ziegfest and be-
gin playing at 5 p.m., an hour
after the gates of Whataburger
Field open to festivalgoers. - Caller-Times

Bio

We are a group of friends from Corpus Christi Texas. Having gone to high school together and now college. Our influences are all over the charts. Our main influence would be the Foo Fighters, Incubus, and the Eli Young Band. We like to think we incorporate styles from all of those bands, as well as add in our own unique flavor.
