Orlando indie pop-punk group A Brilliant Lie will appeal to any fans of the Joy Formidable and Paramore, not only for their catchy, edgy songs, but also for their passionate live shows.

Singer-guitarist Tara Lightfoot’s warble is not unlike that of Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, and her bandmates — Tim Cook-Berry, James Christopher Lane and Zach Teman — surround her with an intense aural environment. And if that’s not enough to convince you to check them out, their first EP, Regarding Harry Lime, features a track called Death Don’t Pony Up For Gas, which gets its name from an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. On January 22nd, new ears will have the pleasure of taking in Orlando's next big sound. Orlando band A Brilliant Lie, is growing bigger by the day as they take Central Florida by storm.

Having taken home the "Best band of 2011" award at the Deland music festival in November, as well as being heard numerous times on Orlando rock station 101.1 WJRR's "Native Noise", A brilliant lie is pouring a strong foundation all over Central Florida. With an increasing fan base, and the type of music that will have you singing along in your head long after the final note is played, A Brilliant Lie is emerging as one of the premier acts in Central Florida.

The band has played the Florida Music Festival, each of the last two years, and this year they are competing to share the main stage at the festival, a testament to their meteoric rise. You can vote for them to play that stage here, by typing in their name on the comment thread.

Members Tim Cook-Berry, Tara Lightfoot, Chris Lane, and Xaq Teman bring an interesting energy to a music scene in need of a jolt. With the release of their first EP "Regarding Harry Lime" last year, and the tremendous feedback that followed, A Brilliant Lie has nowhere to go but up.

Lead singer Tara Lightfoot's angelic voice, poured over creative and intelligent guitar riffs alongside an upbeat rhythm section, make for an accessible yet thought provoking listen. The energy that is given off at their live shows is contagious, you can't help but feel the raw emotion as they pull you in and cease to let go.

On January 22nd, A Brilliant Lie will be performing in Orlando at Backbooth, with Hawthorne Heights and Me Talk Pretty. The show starts at 7pm so be sure to get their early as it promises to be a crowded affair. Tickets are 10 dollars in advance and 12 dollars at the door.

As of now, with a huge show to kick off the new year, and a chance to play the biggest stage at the Florida Music Festival, 2012 promises to be nothing short of brilliant.

I found A Brilliant Lie by accident. I will be listening to them on purpose for a very long time. Describing the style of this band is tough because they don't mimic anything. If I were to give you any kind of comparison I would have to say look somewhere between 10,000 Maniacs and The Cranberries. Tara's vocals most certainly have moments that remind me of Natalie Merchants, especially during the softer sections..

The five song EP is a consistent arrangement of great melodies with very well written hooks and overall lyrics. My two favorite tracks would have to be "Live while sleeping" and "Kitchen Light", but you really can't go wrong with any of the songs. All five tracks keep you interested and are well thought out. I love the slow, soft intro to "Lullabies for open eyes" and how it opens up into a much bigger song. I could go on about all the little nuances that make the EP great but I advise you to head over to their Facebook page and take a listen for yourself. Orlando five-piece, A Brilliant Lie, have just set the first of three exciting upcoming EPs sail; Threads: Cutter. The band had previously announced their reasons for releasing a trio of small collections throughout the course of the following 12 months, which largely included their desire to share how much their outfit has shaped with their growing musical journey. What greater way is there to showcase sheer enthusiasm and vigour for the art you’re creating, than produce reams of clever, deft musical offerings?

Kicking the action off with pace and gloss, Always at Odds is a prime example of the band’s ability to push their limits, not only with the angsty yet upbeat riffs and drums, but the soaring vocals of Tara Lightfoot. Anyone unfamiliar with this band might presume Lightfoot’s harmonies would be a tad rougher, and more aggressive to match the hammering guitars, but her quality is clear, honest and fairly classical, which adds an element of utter class to unapologetic rock. Pieces is vastly similar to the rage and thundering riffs presented in EP-opener, Always at Odds. Although these tracks have certain parallels to one another, you can imagine that this band have powered through tirelessly to craft some blazing hard rock, which can only be anticipated for the remainder of this EP and the other two proceeding.

My qualms with churning out so many EPs in such a relatively short space of time begin with the quality of each track, though; the old debate of ‘all killer, no filler’, or whether that unwritten nuisance of a rule will be unfulfilled at any stage. However, as third track of five on Threads: Cutter, Circles for Sewing, is a finger-picked number led by Lightfoot’s theatrical vocals. This offering is handsome, in an entirely different fashion to the first two. The quaint riff which begins the track is enjoyable, but it is how that soft melody tumbles into a thicker, bolder bass, guitar and drum combination, making way for another heavy rock beast. Filler? No.

Drive ‘Til Morning assumes a slightly different style, again; the only distinctive remnant linking this track to the last two, for sure, is Lightfoot’s unique vocal ability. This is another song driven more by the skill of picked strings, but the drums are far catchier, with a much more toe-tapping indie vibe. It really comes as no shock that this band have received plenty of recognition for the act they have become; it is also quite easy to visualise the majesty of their performance held at the decadent House of Blues, Orlando, back on 11th July. Further still, Drive ‘Til Morning attests to their writing capabilities; Lightfoot’s simmering vocals are matched only by the challenging lyrics themselves, and the repeated hails of “destroy, rebuild” resonate through defiance.

Again, Bittered Bones shakes the pattern of the EP up that bit more. This is the more hungering and emotional of the bunch; Lightfoot’s vocals are gentle, yet piercing, and they come across angelically in this EP finale.

My concerns regarding similarity of pieces has been quashed; the first two storm in, but it is the other three tracks that really lay claim to the band’s top alternative rock status. If these alternating portions of musical quality are to be showcased again, but with a peppering of additional creativity each time, the next two EPs should be corking. - Rock n Reel Reviews

They’re one of the most exciting rock bands in Orlando and as July kicks off, this talented band is pretty damn busy.

After a whirlwind recording session this Spring, they recently released the track listing for their forthcoming EP Threads: Cutter, which will be a three part series rolling out over the next year. They’ll spotlight the new music at House of Blues this weekend, and they provided the first peek at their new music with a preview on YouTube.

Let’s start with the Album Release show details. For those of you not familiar with A Brilliant Lie, this fivesome delivers guitar-driven rock fronted by charismatic lead singer Tara Lightfoot. They are a blast on stage and always deliver an entertaining set. On Saturday, they’ll also be joined by the engaging pop-punk of Hero’s Fate. (They are also a blast on social media and I highly recommend following them for guaranteed chuckles and some damn good rock)

The first single from Threads is a gritty rocker that shows the band pushing themselves in an edgier direction. It’s good stuff, and a track that highlights Lightwood’s voice as never before. Check out “Circles For Sewing” below.
