"Get the first full listen of A War Within’s new album ‘Believe’ (exclusive)"

Metalcore band A War Within is releasing their heavy new album Believe on March 8, but have teamed up with AP to give a sneak peek to all 12 songs today.

The music is loud and, oftentimes, dark; singer and bassist Spencer Maybe says the band was inspired by a period of change in their lives.

“The songs range from heartbroken to joyful; this record embodies our spirit,” he says. “Music is how we deal with life’s difficulties.”

"ALBUM REVIEW: A War Within ‘Believe’"

Looking for intense vocals, fast beats, and hardcore mixed with EDM? Look no further than A War Within. The band originated from Detroit in 2014 and from that point on, they’ve ascended from the bottom to this year’s tour with genre heavyweights Miss May I and Blessthefall. Their first album kicked off their career and their sophomore album, Believe, promises fans that the band can only go up.

“Promises” kicks off the album by throwing out some electronic sounds to back up the band’s heavy introduction. From there, the songs continue to grow and play off of it. The lyrics hit hard and the way both the screams and growls mix together create a delightful vocal track. Each song echoes this mix of screams and growls together, which brings the band back to core of what their genre is.

One of my personal favorite tracks is “A New Hope”. The song’s mood switches dramatically, which bring out a lovely contrast to the piece. It starts out intense and with electronic sirens blaring in the background to create a sense of urgency, and then it takes a quick break to slow down for a moment before building back up. Leading into their next song, “Mirrors” doesn’t waste any time diving right into a thrumming beat that leads into a hard hitting chorus.

Each track takes a unique part of the band and creates an intricate sound that makes up one fantastic record. From “Betrayal” to “The Hunter and The Lion”, each song defines the group as a force to be reckoned with. If you like Palisades or Blessthefall, you’ll be certain to enjoy A War Within.

A War Within is on tour! You can buy concert tickets here. Believe is out on March 8th. You can purchase a CD here.

"ALBUM REVIEW: A WAR WITHIN – BELIEVE"

The Detroit based quintet A War Within have slowly been rising through the musical ranks as of late. The band is currently getting ready to release their sophomore album Believe on March 8th all while touring across the country with heavy hitters Miss May I, blessthefall, Sirens & Sailors and The Plot In You on the “Drop The Gloves” tour. With this recent success for the band, it seems like the future is only getting bigger for these guys and with their latest effort, Believe is proof that hard work pays off.

About A War Within

Believe is a vast improvement on their debut album Sons of Saturn. This time around they have opted for a heavier and fuller sound, including more electronics and bigger, catchier choruses. One of Believe‘s biggest strengths is in its variety. Each song seems to be able to stand out on its own without blending together with the others, which seems to be an increasingly common place in the genre. Songs such as “Promise” and “No Matter What” are some of the heavier songs that are accented by well crafted electronics. “Mirrors” and “Weight of the World” are the more pop driven songs on the album. “Weight of the World” has incredibly catchy hooks that are complimented nicely with background choral vocals. “We Are Legion” has some huge choruses along with some gang vocals thrown in. The variety of elements used on each song allows each song to maintain its own identity and stand out on its own.

On the vocal side, the cleans are great while the screams range from average to good. There are moments of incredibly catchy signing and choruses that will undoubtedly get the crowd rocking and singing along in a live environment, but some of the harsh vocals leave something to be desired. Some of the more mid range screams can be a little abrasive at times mostly because they are a little raspy, which can be polarizing to some listeners. The lows on the album are fantastic; offering up a fleshed out punishing side to compliment the bands heavier instrumentals quite well.

Overall Believe is an engaging and well put together album. Many bands seemingly have a sophomore slump as they continue progressing and evolving, overall failing to find their identity and sound. A War Within did the opposite of that with Believe. Filling the album with a wide compliment of breakdowns, catchy hooks, gang vocals, massive sing-a-long choruses and weaving electronic elements throughout, it’s clear that this is a huge step up for the band and their sound. Do yourself a favor and take a listen when it drops early next month. - Soundfiction

"A War Within’s Spencer Maybe Explains How To Make ‘Believe’"

A War Within are currently enjoying the life of a hard-rocking band in full effect. Currently on the road and enjoying the attention of recently released album Believe, the band from Detroit are capitalizing on the acclaim of this new set of songs.

All the expected shouts and screams of debut Sons of Saturn remain, but with a better sense of control and execution. Thunder is deployed with more accuracy and lyrical content is sharpened with a degree of precision that’s as vital as it is disruptive.

Taking a moment to break from the mayhem Spencer Maybe took a moment to invite ARTISTdirect Interviews into his bathroom for a nice soapy interview, and to talk about drive, decisions and kindness to cats.
A War Within InterviewWhere are you right now?

I’m on a day off from the Drop The Gloves tour taking bubble bath.

Please name your fellow band members and their roles… oh, and who has the best dance moves?

Armando Castaño, screams and bass. Nikhil Rao, guitar. Jereme Stebila, guitar. Angelo Walker, drums. That’s very debatable. I think I’m the only one of the band that can really twerk but I know some of the guys have pretty good moves. So you be the judge.

Tell us about your new project: Who did you work with? Where was it recorded? What’s it about? Is there candy?

Our new album is called Believe. We recorded it all ourselves. Half was mixed by Joey Sturgis and the other half was mixed by Josh Buckner and Nick Matzkows. It’s about a large array of emotions and current feelings involving the band. It is pretty much our past experiences and daily lives. There is sweet sweet candy.

How do you describe your music to new friends?

Sound wise people say We Came As Romans & Crown The Empire. We think it’s very easy to get into with its catchy melodies heavy riffs and beats. It’s got flavors for all types of pallets.

How did you first meet, and where exactly did you become a band?

We all met at completely different times. I started the band in 2014 and over the past two years I’ve connected over the Internet or with friends to create the current lineup.

Other than A War Within, what should your hometown be known for?

Detroit is known for producing a lot of awesome bands. From We Came As Romans, The Black Dahlia Murder, I See stars, I Prevail, and even older iconic artists like Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Madonna, Eminem, and every Motown artist started in Detroit.

A War Within Believe InterviewPlease look around you right now and please describe the first item or person you see that’s significant to you.

Well considering I’m naked in a bath tub drinking coffee I’ll show you my mug. I’m a big fan of cats. Being on the road for as long as I can makes it much easier to take care of a cat than any other animal. There are a lot of stray animals in Detroit and a big dream of mine is to open Spencer’s Academy for cats. A place to shelter cats and other animals who have been abandoned and need homes. That is definitely a goal I one-day wish to achieve.

What first inspired you to pursue music? If it was a musician or a specific piece of music, please tell us all about why you find it so inspirational…

At first it was listening to music and playing music. A show is pretty much the most impressionable thing to see when growing up. To have the confidence and ability to share yourself in front of a room full of possible strangers is a powerful show of strength. I’m also a big people person, as well as the rest of the band. We like to make connections that are as real as any other with all the people we meet. We talk listen and tell stories about ourselves and can really touch the people you come across. My love for creating and playing music extends to working hard and seeing the world before my very eyes. It’s always that dream that other inspire and I reciprocate back.

What’s the best advice anyone has given you about pursuing a life in music?

Don’t ever give up. When the chips are down and cards aren’t in your favor and it seems like all is lost, you never know what is really around the corner. A War Within isn’t the first band I’ve been in and it may not be the last but I’ve had to quit prior projects and have felt extremely discouraged by friends and family around me. What I have truly discovered is that if you keep struggling through the misery and pass the difficult tasks that seem impossible, there is a light that shows at the end of the tunnel. It’s worth every struggle imaginable.
“To have the confidence and ability to share yourself in front of a room full of possible strangers is a powerful show of strength.”Not including your current crew, who (alive or dead) would you love to have in your van for an all day drive from gig to gig?

I think having someone to make a happy vibe is always appreciated when being stuck in a van. Maybe Mitch Hedburg or Stephen Lynch to keep the performer theme. Maybe even Jesus to take the wheel. You never know if they’ll be a good choice until you really get out there with them.
What song best sums up your life right now?

The whole new album is a current update on my life. Believe represents where we are as people and as artists. It’s a little more open to interpretation but there is fun in interpreting how crazy, awesome and twisted my life can be!

What is the best reaction to your music you have experienced so far?

The best is always when people lose themselves with us during our performance. It’s such a great connection when you feel people, especially ones that don’t know a thing about you, vibe out to the same emotions you feel on stage. From stage diving, moshing, crowd surfing, jumping and head bobbing along, to just clapping or staring with intent is what it looks like.

Take a moment to dream – Where do hope to be a year from now?

I have always wanted to play Europe, and especially Bodukan in Tokyo, Japan. I’ve always been amazed with Japanese culture and would love to see it one day. The bigger task is making the plane ride to me and not necessarily the show happen. It’s a long trip.

What’s your next step towards that dream?

Every day, work hard and put everything you have into all the little things you do on a daily basis. They add up overtime and in great amounts. People really do appreciate the little things in life. The hard part is seeing that they matter.

"Spencer Maybe of A War Within"

We’ve said before we keep an eye on hometown favorites and these guys definitely fall into that category. Seeing friends blow up is amazing, Kitties.

The guys in this band of unsigned, kitten loving, misfits of A War Within are Spencer Maybe (vocals/bass), Armando Castano (vocals/bass), Nikhil Rao (guitars), Jereme Stebila (guitars), and Angelo Walker (drums). Their newest release, Believe, came out on Mar 08, 2016 and is doing quite well on the charts. The guys are currently out on tour with Miss May I, Blessthefall, The Plot in You, and Sirens & Sailors. Later this month the band will head out on their own for a few confirmed shows.

We got a few minutes to sit down with A War Within’s own Spencer and grilled him on a few tough, but fair questions about kittens, dodge ball leagues, and the new record. So, pull on your AWW jersey and settle in for a good read. Head over to our Facebook page and throw us a ‘Like’ or tweet at us on Twitter and let us know your thoughts.

NRR: Thanks for taking some time out to answer some questions for National Rock Review, it’s been a minute since we talked to you guys last. What’s been going on with the band, A War Within, so far in early 2016?
Spencer Maybe: We are currently on tour with Blessthefall, Miss May I, The Plot in You, and Sirens and Sailors.
NRR: You had a new album come out March 8, 2016, Believe. What can fans new and old expect from the new kitten approved material?
Spencer Maybe: ‘It’s paws up cat-tastic’ says most kittens. It’s a huge change from Sons of Saturn. It has a heavier vibe but also still has a good variety of sounds. A different mixture of alternative rock and metalcore.
Header-Believe-AWarWithin-AlbumArt
NRR: You said you guys are out on a full US tour with Miss May I and Blessthefall. How are things so far and how many hotel pools have you been in already?
Spencer Maybe: Well we’ve broken down four times and been in a total of three hotel pools! Other than hotel pools and van/trailer breakdowns, the experiences so far unbelievable, especially with friends like Miss May I and The Plot In You. This is definitely the greatest tour we’ve ever been on. It’s pretty amazing to meet all the new fans as well as the old ones we haven’t met before.
NRR: You have gotten some pretty big eyes on you since the last album came out. Is the national attention a little surreal to a one time small Detroit, MI local band?
Spencer Maybe: I think it always is to see people around the country excited for you to come to their town. Being at the epee-center of the action makes it harder to see what’s really going on out there. It is super enjoyable to see all the reactions that our hard work has yielded. We’re just too stoked for the future.
NRR: We’ve recently lost a few big names in music starting with Scott Weiland and Lemmy to Bowie and Fry passing as well among others. Did any of those very talented artists have any influence in your own careers?
Spencer Maybe: I think Bowie was most influential compared to the rest. I grew up hearing his music on the radio and even seeing him in Labyrinth and The Prestige. It is a very grounding fact that one day you come into this world and then another day you leave, so you gotta make the best of it while you can. No matter where your journey takes you one day it will end. So enjoy it because to me that’s all life is, a journey.
NRR: With the mindset of the band being what it is, would playing behind chicken wire on a small stage to a packed bar, i.e. Roadhouse, be more rewarding then playing in front of sixty thousand in a pretty sterile Ford Field setting?
Spencer Maybe: I think performing “On The Road Again” while beer bottles are being thrown at you is still probably equally as cool as playing in front of a huge stadium in front of 40,000 and 50,000 people. To me, it’s not about the size of the crowd it’s more about the intensity of the show. Whether it is five or 5,000 I care more about the vibe from the stage than the size of it.
NRR: Being in a band is like being a pro athlete, you need a certain amount of confidence in your sound or ability. What would be one or two things that you’re really proud of in how your vibe comes across?
Spencer Maybe: The thing we’re most proud of is a band is our ability to connect to our fans on and off stage. We surprise people with our performance as well as when we’re done we like to talk to, shake hands, and hug everyone that’s at the show. Not many bands do that nowadays whether they’re too awkward or egotistical. We just really enjoy every part of what we do. People that support us get everything we have to give them at shows because they deserve it from us. It is why we take all the time we can to make their time with us the best.
“The confident swagger that accompanies their live show is only half of the story however; A War Within have shown themselves as band who relish the meet & greets and fan interaction as much as their studio time and touring – something which undoubtedly shines through with the atmosphere and energy at a show.”
NRR: More bands seem to be doing VIP deals on tour or really being creative with their merch. How important are these things for you not just as a revenue stream?
Spencer Maybe: I think those things are great for creating a desire for whatever the grand prize is for being a VIP. Most bands just have you spend time with them for VIP access. I think a VIP time [needs] to be a little bit different. We’ve been talking about more exclusive things and to us we want our VIP to be more from the heart rather than [just] a paid time with us. It’s crucial to treat the people that are willing to go above and beyond for us in the same manner. So, you’ll just have to wait and see once we do our first VIP access to see what we have in store.
NRR: Is there a moment, that thinking back on it now, in the your career, with the band now, that you can’t help but still feel a tad bit embarrassed about, makes you laugh about despite yourself, or just still makes you shake your head in disbelief? A Spinal Tap moment if you will, that you’d be willing to share with me?
Spencer Maybe: We’ve definitely played a few shows they were completely sub-par. I was surprised people didn’t leave the venue entirely. Not everybody has a great day and sometimes bad days can just get even worse. This tour is a pretty good one. Even with the fact that even great things come with some bad things at times. This is the only tour where we have broken down four times in two weeks.
NRR: Do the big festivals like Warped Tour that are coming up soon, signify a milestone if a band like you guys are offered a spot?
Spencer Maybe: I think everyone would agree that Warped Tour would be a huge milestone for any band. Just playing our hometown Warped Tour was amazing. I don’t know many bands who have played on the Ernie Ball stage for even one day let alone been on the whole tour for a year. I think just to make it through Warped Tour would be an amazing feeling whether you’re on main stage or not because I hear all the horror stories that is involved with Warped Tour. It doesn’t sound like an easy task to complete.
NRR: How does the group go through the writing process, is it all one person doing the lion’s share with help or is it a group effort from start to finish?
Spencer Maybe: It definitely varies from song to song, but for this record, considering losing members halfway through it has been mainly me and Armando writing the bulk of it. Since the joining of the new members we developed an integration as the later songs occurred. At the end of the day whether is one person or all five of us to write this, we all input our $0.02 into each song.

NRR: Does the ability to switch roles on stage give flexibility to what you can try out at rehearsal?
Spencer Maybe: Sometimes rehearsals are not only just me and Armando switching but sometimes everyone will pretty much switch positions just for fun. You never know when somebody’s vocals are going to cut out or something of that nature, or when someone’s going to be sick. We’re all pretty prepared if a member has to bow out except for drums.
NRR: When you are out on the road playing the bigger lineup shows, have you picked up any good habits to incorporate in your own routine or seen things that you made a mental note never to do yourselves?
Spencer Maybe: We definitely watch all the bands we play with. I’d like to pick up little techniques there. We also enjoy what they do on stage. We made quite a few of our own stage techniques ourselves and from watching other bands. I don’t think I ever want to see the day where I’m completely satisfied with my on stage presence and showmanship.
NRR: When will we get the official AWW Dodge-ball League?
Spencer Maybe: We’ve been talking for a quite a while about setting up a true dodge-ball tournament. Just with the record and then the tour going on right now we haven’t really had the time to set it up. I think once we have enough people truly interested and actually wanting to play dodge-ball, then the tournament will occur as far a league, that will have to come later. - national Rock Review - Erich Morse

"A War Within debuts new single, ‘Hell is Empty and All the Devils are Here’"

A War Within’s new album, Believe, is set to drop March 8, but today they’re premiering the second single from that album, “Hell is Empty and All the Devils are Here.” (You can also jam the song “Mirrors.”) The Detroit-based metalcore act will be joining Blessthefall, Miss May I, The Plot in You and Sirens and Sailors beginning today, touring in support of the new release (dates below).

We spoke with vocalist Spencer Maybe about the song:

“This song is written around a story we made about a phrase from Shakespeare. The music style is a nu-metal throw back with a different spin on it. The back and forth vocals and heavy synths are really what bring this track to life. The instruments bring a very heavy disco or headbanging feel to it, whichever you prefer. The lyrics are written about the mass evil in the world and how it is always ready to take hold of you. The song is written from the perspective of both yourself and the source of evil.”

A War Within formed in Detroit in 2014 from the ashes of a number of broken projects, settling on the current quintet. You can follow them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. - David Stagg - HM Magazine

"A War Within Premiere New Song, “Slave”"

Detroit metalcore outfit A War Within will release their new album, ‘Believe,’ on March 8. In anticipation, the band has teamed up with Revolver to premiere their new track, “Slave.” Check it out below and let us know what you think in the comments!

Vocalist Spencer Maybe said, “We wrote ‘Slave’ as a Beatles-inspired metal track. The music was aimed at more of a pretty and beautiful chord arrangement along with heavier desperate tone. The piano adds a different sound to the metal song. It’s a people’s anthem about dedication, hard work and how people can take it for granted. The lyrics are about how everyone around you can build you up or tear you down in your position in society.”

"Blessthefall Tap Miss May I + More For 2016 Drop the Gloves North American Tour Read More: Blessthefall Tap Miss May I + More For North American Tour"

The gauntlet has been thrown down! Blessthefall have announced the “Drop the Gloves” tour, which is set to kick off in February of 2016. The Arizona-based metalcore act will bring heavyweights Miss May I with them for direct support along with the Plot in You, Sirens and Sailors and A War Within.
Blessthefall will be out supporting their fifth studio album, To Those Left Behind, which added “Up in Flames” and “Walk on Water” to the band’s growing catalog of must-see hits. Fellow metalcore outfit Miss May I find themselves in a similar situation, promoting their fifth album Deathless. "Amnplify Review: A War Within"

Detroit-based rock metalcore band, A War Within describes themselves as a chaotic mess of sexiness, fun, passion and hard work that lives for the thrill of changing lives and moving hearts. The five-piece is made up of Spencer Maybe (clean vocals/bass), Armando Castano (dirty vocals/bass), Nikhil Rao (guitar), Jereme Stebila (guitar) and Angelo Walker (drums). It is clear that music is a great love shared amongst the band mates. It surrounds you and is seemingly embraced and stands for the auditory example of a multitude of feelings. This passion for their craft radiates out of the music the band creates.

-

-

The band might have a penchant for rock and metalcore in their overall sound, but they in fact listen to a lot of unexpected music genres – pop, R&B and rap along with instrumental, rock, metal, hardcore and acoustic – it really is a little bit of everything. They don’t seek to emulate the sound of a particular band, instead they take all the sounds that they enjoy and subsequently try to understand the emotions and feelings they experience when it comes to writing music. That aforementioned music is encapsulated on the debut album from A War Within entitled Sons of Saturn along with their Lost Woods EP and their latest track entitled A New Hope. The currently unsigned band is nearing the end of their second album release now. At present it’s not fully tracked yet, so there is no official release date. They do however hope to have it ready for release in March or April next year.

The point of difference with A War Within is both their writing style and vocals. Just who they sound alike varies from person to person. Most people gravitate towards to what they know that’s as close as possible to the sound of the Detroit quintet. The music the band has released to date is an eclectic mix of sounds and songs. They make a concerted effort to maintain a general sound across the record, but they don’t try to pigeonhole themselves into a specific sound and this comes back to the variety of genres that they take influence from.

The guys in A War Within don’t subscribe to the 9-5 lifestyle and if they weren’t musicians, would pursue something more obscure. They take no enjoyment in wearing button up shirts and khakis; they enjoy making noise and performing. If it wasn’t music though, the Detroit quintet believes it would be some other creative pursuit believing they are too weird to fit into a normal setting. As A War Within though, the most notable show they have played to date is Warped Tour. Every opportunity that has been afforded to them though, they have been very gracious and humble. The most rewarding shows and experiences however are usually smaller shows. The band has done a few charity shows and parties whereby they can interact on a more personal level and be around people who enjoy their music rather than packing up and heading to the next gig. A War Within is a very social band and likes to spend time with fans, patrons, other bands and generally anyone they can get in front of. They have been filming a music video that has put them in intimate places in front of strangers in awkward situations. The band has spent time with them afterwards just based on the coincidence of the situation. They understandably have a lot of fun participating in what are essentially guerrilla style performances. It has exposed them to different types of people who aren’t expecting the band to just show up and command attention. It is experiences like this that has helped them grow as a band.

There is much left to do for A War Within with touring all day being a big step indeed. They want to work hard and make music that makes people happy all the time. The chance to sell out a venue is also an achievement the band would like to make. They also have a desire to tour the world and can envisage a 10-Year tour reunion playing through their first release. They are all achievements that would support them all on the band alone. One of those might be playing Budokan in Japan in the future. It’s a famous event centre that began as a martial arts arena for competition, but housed shows and concerts there. It’s a fascinating country and somewhere that would be very accepting of A War Within that’s for sure. It’s all ahead of them and they are well on their way. - amnplify

"A War Within release video for “A New Hope”"

"I can see the light/Shining through the darkness/Against all odds/I'm still here" professes A War Within vocalist Spencer Maybe during the emotive metal of "A New Hope". Created from the remains of previous projects and groups of friends, the southeast Michigan five-piece is looking toward the future with their continually evolving mix of modern metalcore and the throwback intensity of yesterday. When asked about their sound, as cliche as it may sound, the band stated “we write songs that we want to hear in hopes fans will pick up on that.” Maybe would go on to define the struggle and victories of an up-and-coming outfit:"We’re out here touring, playing shows, hustling merch and grinding our lives away because we just want to make music.”

You can grab a listen to their first single “A New Hope” at AWWMusic.com or watch the video below. The band is going to be heading into an extensive touring schedule starting in late-2015 in support of their upcoming self titled release coming early next year --- peep the dates following the video. - Alternative Press

"It Lies Within CD Release Show at The Token Lounge in Westland, MI on 10-Jan-2016"

Next up is A War Within. Their energy is infectious, they start the set at 110% and never letting up. The band’s sound mixes a techno beat with metal. The result is metalcore melded with hard rock, to which the amped up crowd hit their feet.

A War Within makes fun almost as important as their music; they crack jokes and show love to the crowd between songs. They even break into a metal cover of “Larger Than Life” from the Backstreet Boys, where vocalist Maybe ventures through the crowd as he sings, high-fiving anyone he can reach. Their love and energy are evident as fans crowd the stage, rock out, and don their ‘AWW Army’ jerseys.

The group formed in 2014 and had been working hard ever since. Along with their debut album, Sons Of Saturn, they have been busy shooting a new music video. The band released the video for “We Are Legion” on January 07. They also have a new album scheduled for release in April. On top of their new material, A War Within is preparing for the Drop The Gloves Tour starting next month.

The Detroit-based metalcore band lineup includes Spencer Maybe (clean vocals/bass), Armando Castaño (dirty vocals/bass), Jereme Stebila (guitar), Angelo Walker (drums), and Nikhil Rao (guitar). - National Rock Review

"Spencer D Maybe from A War Within Interview"

National Rock Review had the chance to sit down with Spencer D Maybe of A War Within, to talk about the band and the new album, SONS OF SATURN.

NRR: Is this album self-released and who did the album mixing?
Maybe: Yes, we recorded it ourselves, and it was mixed mainly by Nick Scott and one from Cory Brunnemann.
NRR: How did you guys get together to form the band, A War Within?
Maybe: (Laughing) That’s a super long story. Mike and I have known each other for years. And other than our drummer, Nate, we’re all friends of friends from all over the place.
NRR: Are you guys going to be play any shows in the near future, I’ve tried looking for info but couldn’t find anything?
Maybe: We have some things in the works but nothing booked. We’re in the works, looking for a tour at the moment. Our perfect tour would be Linkin Park, Korn, 30 Seconds to Mars, and A Day to Remember. At least, that’s what I feel. I feel like we could play with BVB, Linkin Park, and still fit in with bands like Volumes or Issues. We’re stoked to play in front of five or fifty-thousand.
NRR: I’ve seen two different descriptions of your sound, give me the official version of what your sound is.
Maybe: I can’t really pin point our sound to be honest. We’re kinda a rock band and kinda a metal band. We just like to start by writing a good song and then let the [fellas] pick the sound.
NRR: When writing a song is it a group effort or does everyone kind of add a part after the large percentage is done by the main song writer(s)?
Maybe: Each song we’ve [wrote] has been written differently. Some came easy and others were a struggle. I would [definitely] say that we start with one person’s complete idea. Whether it be an entire song or not and then we pick out what’s good and what’s not and each kinda “jizz” on it till we’re all vibing how its going.
NRR: How long have you guys been together playing officially?
Maybe: We’ve been officially united as a band on Aug 19, 2014.
NRR: Ok, cool. Two more and you can relax.
Maybe: (Laughing) I’m ready for more now, I’ve got my Jim Beam [Whiskey] flowing.
NRR: Tell me about Craig Mabbitt being on the track with you guys.
Maybe: Well, I think I’d make everyone else mad if I don’t mention them, but anyone listening to the tracks won’t know the entire Escape The Fate band during 2014 is on that song minus the drummer and bassist. We had a party at my house and invited them all over. It was a crazy situation. I had to track everything T.J. [Bell], Craig [Mabbitt], and Kevin [Gruft], I think his real name, is in under three hours while there was 50 plus people in my house partying including the awesome Max Green.
NRR: So, it was a completely spur of the moment kind of thing?
Maybe: Yes, they came to party and agreed to track that night. It’s like the old days, no? Just drop a track in the studio…
NRR: Last hard one, for anyone that hears the album for the first time, what would you want them to take away from it the most?
Maybe: We want people to feel something. We draw our inspiration from our lives past, present, and future. Our sound is inspired by our nature and moods. Our lyrics [are] always about experiences, thoughts, and vulnerabilities. Everything we do is motivated by each other and everyone that has pushed us together. Our first music video, “Holding On”, is all true material. It’s how we came up with the band name. We have a constant struggle with ourselves to do and continue what we love. There’s our band name right there. We laugh, we cry, we hurt, we feel moved and glorious. With those feelings that’s how we write our music. We became a band because we found each other and we have be driven to insane places together mentally and physically. [What] we want is to share our experiences. We know [what the] music means to us and we’re ready to work at it til we can’t anymore. I think I lost my point but we [definitely] want people to feel they are apart of us, our fans, our friends, and our family. - National Rock Review

"Q AND A WITH A WAR WITHIN"

A War Within is a Michigan based hardcore band that has been making a name for themselves. While the band is currently in the search for a new lead singer they have not let anything slow them down! The band is currently made up of Alex Brisby and Armando Castano on guitar, Spencer Maybe on bass, and drummer Nate Forsythe. Check out what the band had to say when they chatted with BareBones Ent!

BS: What is A War Within to you?
AWW: To me, man, this band is everything. From the moment I wake of til the moment I pass out, it is all I think about. I’m sure I dream about it if I actually did dream. I love to make music. It fills my soul with hope and love. It’s the best feeling in the world even with all the drama and the hard work that goes into it. Most people don’t realize the amount that is actually put in but those that do are the people who really enjoy music. Those are the people I relate to. Also this band isn’t just me, its the members, our families, our friends, a large group of people supporting every push we make. It’s an unbelievable feeling as well as pressure to perform and succeed.

BS: You recently announced the departure of a member. For those that don’t know how did this come about?
AWW: It was really a band decision. There were many instances of friction throughout the band and he was the main cause. He refused to maintain a professional demeanor among us and our peers as well as just brought down the vibe of everything. We were hoping to resolve it after the tour but it was a serious weight that just keep building up. Everyone is now on the same page and finishing the rest of the tour. It’s been the first time we’ve had a fun and drama free atmosphere

BS: What is it like as a band that spends so much time together to find something like that out?
AWW: It hurts, this isn’t the first time this has happened. No one likes a sense of betrayal and I know everyone feels it. Whether or not he had the best intentions in his heart, there was no consideration of all the hard work and support of everyone around him and this band. We just couldn’t let it continue.

BS: Well like everyone else, we are glad that you won’t let anything keep you down! What are you currently working on?
AWW: Before the tour we made a promise to improve our talents by doing vocal covers as well as make plenty of fans happy with full band covers as well. we are looking for a new singer. one that fits us well and is determined as the rest of us. so expect to see more of those in the future. we are getting tour offers and do plan on releasing new music with our new singer around summertime of 2015. either way no matter what we do we will continue to push to reach out to all those who enjoy our music and faces to make sure we come to their town and show them a good time. if you know what i mean - Bare Bones Ent
