..one of the most exciting trios in town.. - Jon Garelick
..."[Michelin] is evidently a very intelligent musician, higly swinging and exquisitely elaborate regarding harmony."..Michelin is one of the great Uruguayan pianists that was added to this festival.Intelligent composer, with a great sense of balance, knows how to recycle different styles into a new format, always using the jazz language which he controls to perfection. As a pianist, his finesse in handling harmonies is remarkable." - La Nacion (Argentina)
NANDO MICHELIN Art Double Time DTRCD 144 (64:54)
In this ear-grabbing gallery of breathtaking originals, Uruguayan pianist Nando Michelin does more than connect dots between music and painting. Drawing inspiration from such canonic modernists as "Juan Gris" and "Henri Matisse," Michelin paints with emotional directness and cutting edge sophistication. In "Marc Chagall," for instance, one hears echoes of Michelin's South American heritage as well as the advanced training he received at Berklee in Boston, Michelin's home for the past decade.
Fleshing out Michelin's outlines are bassist Fernando Huergo, drummer Steve Langone, and percussionist Sergio Faluotico, whose nuanced energies accent with taste and disciplined abandon, as heard in "Joan Miro" and "Picasso in Blue," Michelin is a compelling soloist. However, it's tenorist Jerry Bergonzi who splashes the brightest colors. Indeed, Bergonzi's forays are the work of "a man possessed," as annotator Ted Panken puts it. Credit Bergonzi. But also credit Michelin's grand designs and the quintet's great grace, passion and simpatico.

About "Paul Gaugin" from "Art"
A great piece. The entire compositional structure is Wayne Shorter-like,...
Bergonzi has such a fat sound.5 stars.I don't know the composer [Nando Michelin] but I want to check out this record. - Ted Panken/B.Marsalis blindfolded
Chants: A Candomble experience.
"..Departing from his inventiveness, this Uruguayan musician takes the carnaval mask out of the themes, finding inside high quality music and a lot of jazz: the piano developements are loaded with lyrical force and are complemented by the interesting combination among both Nando and Jerry Bergonzi..." - F. Bezos
"In Nando Michelin's world unexpected connections come as naturallt as home runs to [baseball star] Manny Ramirez. The Brookline-based pianist will showcase at least two of those connections tomorrow night at the Acton Jazz Cafe.... - Bob Young
..." Nando Michelin is a symbiosis-in-sound of Bop and Latin idioms (his repertoire reaches from ostinato figures all the way to breakneck chord progressions),...."

"..[the group] often plays as one-rising,falling and dissecting colorful explorations, and meaty, vamp-heavy solos.
..., the broadminded Duende helps extend the jazz trio concept." - Ken Micallef

"A tight , accomplished album... [Michelin] has made his career exploring the relationship between Latin music and Jazz improvisation, and forging a wholly personal voice that draws on both."Duende" doesn't proceed according to a template. In fact, it's an album full of Latin influences, but evades any kind of predictable Latin connotation. It's a loose, fluid, idiosyncratic jazz trio session that wears its scholarship lightly." - Siddharta Mitter

Bio
The Michelin-Cardoso Group is a joint collaboration between musicians Nando Michelin of Uruguay and Ebinho Cardoso of Brazil. Their latest project Engenheiros, or Engineers, explores the works of obscure Brazilian poet João Cabral de Melo Neto, known to his contemporaries as the “engineer of words.” Cabral, a career diplomat, spent many years in Sevilla and Barcelona where he was influenced by European Surrealism, Expressionism, and Cubism. As a result, Cabral’s poetry uniquely incorporates both European and traditional elements of his native Recife, Brazil. Engenheiros, which combines Cabral’s poetry with Nando and Ebinho’s original music, is an exquisite celebration of the poetry’s beauty, matched by the quality of the compositions, arrangements and production.
Nando is an accomplished pianist, composer, band leader, and educator. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Nando came to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music where he is now faculty. He has recorded over 14 albums, both as a band leader playing mostly original compositions, and several more as a sideman. He has collaborated with many high-caliber musicians such as Esperanza Spalding, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Miguel Zenon, Dave Liebman and others. He has performed at the Boch Center, Kimmel Center for the Arts, Jordan Hall (NEC), Teatro Opera (Buenos Aires), and other prestigious venues both in the US and abroad. Nando is currently an Associate Professor for the Piano Department at the Berklee College of Music, and teaches at Tufts University and the Longy School of Music at Bard College.
Ebinho Cardoso is a virtuoso electric bassist and singer who is among the most respected of Brazilian musicians. Raised in Cuiaba, Brazil, his music blends elements of jazz, classical music, and those of his native Brazil. Ebinho uses atypical elements of the electric bass in his music, such as unique chord structures and re-tunings of his instrument, to demonstrate the versatility of the bass. Ebinho has several albums to his name, his most recent being Engenheiros. Ebinho is also an accomplished educator, having given numerous workshops worldwide, and has published several instructional DVDs and the book “ Harmony and Chord Dictionary as Applied to the Electric Bass”.
