Originally called Gasoline, Samarium was formed in 2013 by Christian Manuel, Tyler Hipps, and Davis Johnstone. As young middle schoolers the trio struggled to find shows around town and make a name for themselves. In 2015, due to differing interests, Johnstone was separated from Samarium and Matthew Shapiro was introduced as the drummer of the band. Throughout their time in high school they began to find success booking shows and began to make themselves better known locally. After recording three albums and removing them from stores, they finally produced an album they were proud of recording, called “Devil’s Jazz”
