"The DePue Brothers Band to return to UPB"

The DePue Brothers Band will return to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford next week to play a vivid mix of bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz.

The band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in the Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall. Tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for all students.

“We do not bring back artists very often to our series,” said Patricia Colosimo, director of Arts Programming. “But because of their extraordinary talents and energizing performance when they were here eight years ago, I am really delighted to have The DePue Brothers in our theater again. Those who attended that first show have repeatedly asked us to bring them back.”

As a family, the DePue Brothers have been making music for almost 40 years. They were named “Musical Family of America” in 1989 by presidential decree, and were the subject of a PBS documentary film in 1993.

Each of them is a classical violin virtuoso in his own right and brings his own individual talents to the band’s sound.

The band’s first album, Classical Grass, sold out of its first printing and its next full album, Weapons of Grass Construction, was released in 2010. Through their music, The DePue Brothers are continuing to give real meaning to the phrase “progressive bluegrass.”

The brothers have been credited as being the founders of the term “grassical music,” their unique blend of classical and American folk music.

“The brothers weave various musical styles to create a lively show that appeals to all ages,” Colosimo said. - the Bradford Era

Bio

Combining bluegrass with jazz, blues, rock, folk, and classical the DePue Brothers have coined their music with the term “grassical”.

Originally from Bowling Green Ohio, making music together since childhood, the DePues have been a family performing phenom for over 35 years.  In 1989 by presidential decree they were dubbed Musical Family of America, in 1993 were the subject of a nationally televised PBS documentary “Music for All Occasions”, and in 2005 were featured on the commercially released documentary Music From the Inside Out.  The brother band has performed in over 30 states throughout the US.  Their classical experience has included leading concertmaster roles with Indianapolis Symphony, Philly Pops, Stars Wars Touring Orchestra, as well as membership with The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Brothers Wallace, Alex, Jason, and Zachary, lead their ensemble in a concert of  bluegrass and classical  favorites from their CD  releases “Classical Grass”, and “Weapons of Grass Construction”, as well as a holiday program from their Cd release “When Its Christmas Time”.
