Silverlake

Silverlake is the new ambient/alternative rock project from brothers Steven and Mitchell Layton, who were formerly founding members of the metal/hardcore act, Despite My Pride. Written on opposite coasts of the U.S, their self-titled debut LP encompasses what it means to be lonely and searching in the most transformative years of life. Both brothers collaborated to create the album while Mitchell was living in Los Angeles and Steven was living in New Jersey to create a record that reflects the separate and complementary sounds of their surroundings. 

In twelve songs, the album spans a full range of thoughts and emotions. From the melancholy subtleties of “Sure Thing,” to the straight ahead grunginess of “Two More Weeks” and the pop-punk energy of “Deep Breath,” the target genre proves itself ambiguous. Though optimistic at times, the album centers around the idea that dreams become burdens when unfulfilled, and remain burdens until given up. Just as the songs were created out of a doubtful hope, so the tracks play on the listeners inner yearnings to both press on and give up. 

The pacing of the tracks leads the songs to cracking peaks and emotional release, while still leaving room to breathe during dreamy and reverberated valleys. To those listening, it’s an inner monologue to the promise and uncertainty that comes with being in the prime of life. The album closes with the cathartic plea, “Wander and Wait,” that builds from a soft prayer to a screaming wish. Whether the album speaks in a whisper or a roar, the message remains: “love me the same.”

The dynamic new release from Silverlake will be available to the public in Spring 2018.
