Oropendola is the indie-folk-pop alter ago of Joanna Schubert (Brookyn, NY). The song of the oropendola, a gregarious bird native to South and Central America, contains distinct yet complementary sonic extremes: mellifluence with a cutting edge. Drawn to duality, feet firmly planted on the ground yet always in flight, and inspired by that quality in artists such as Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, and Sufjan Stevens, Oropendola explores a blend of rawness and trained precision, softness and vibrancy, and playful theatricality with an indie sensibility. Either accompanying herself on just her beloved Korg/Juno, guitar, or ukulele, or joined by other fabulous musicians, Oropendola is "not an artist you can ignore once you hear her ingenious blend [of musical styles]" (Rochester City Newspaper). Joanna is also a keyboardist and backup vocalist in several local groups, the founder and host of Symbiosis (a collaborative songwriter series at Mirror in the Woods for women and nonbinary artists), and a music educator in various settings.
