"Mikki Hommel"

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a Shinobe Ninja show at Arlene’s grocery in New York’s lower east side. After the rambunctious group cleared out, a slightly cleaner cut duo took the stage, featuring a male drummer and a female vocalist on keyboards. I honestly had no intention of attending the following performance, but I hadn’t finished the beer I had purchased at the end of the Shinobe Ninja set, so I decided to stick around. As soon as the new act started performing, and the singer sang her first note, it became alarmingly clear to me that I would be there for at least one more beer. Everyone in the venue immediately stopped what they were doing to stare in amazement of the voice they had just heard.
I later found out that the voice belonged to Mikki Hommel, a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy who was originally from West Palm Beach Florida. Although Mikki was no longer pursuing a career in drama, she had retained an incredible skill for improvisation, and later in her set she invited the crowd to give her topics to write a song about on the spot. As someone who had attempted and failed to write songs several times with ample time and no pressure, I was very impressed with her ability to come up with such a witty and cohesive piece so quickly. - Waiting To Explode

"New Year's Eve- Live Music"

Part of the excitement of not keeping normal hours is that I never know what I’ll come across at four in the morning in the Lower East Side. Usually, I find myself listening to the ravings of the homeless, since, coincidentally, their sleep patterns coincide with mine. But then, the other night, I heard an exquisite voice pouring out from an all-night café. It was like watching the sun rise in the west, something you would never have expected but still feel fortunate to have witnessed. Mikki Hommelwill be at the National Underground this New Year’s Eve. - The Village Voice

Bio

"Simple, soulful music with a razor-sharp edge. The Beacon Pass, is one way to describe the music of Mikki Hommel, the siren of the Lower East Side. She is a soulful singer/songwriter with powerhouse vocals who is based in NYC and is influenced by Eric Hutchinson, Gavin DeGraw and The Lonely Island. Not just your ordinary singer/songwriter, as she uses her sense of humor to connect with lyrics and to her fans, through her improvisational songs and originals. She has an upbeat approach to songwriting and performing that engages everyone to have fun.

Sing loud and not like a Disney character. were her first vocal lessons at the age of 7, from her older sister Kristi. Growing up she had an interest in acting but after seeing the musical RENT, she found a new passion for musical theater and attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC. While attending the conservatory she developed a knack for improvising songs on the piano and upon graduation and attending FAU for a BFA in acting, she began taking her piano and improvising more seriously. After seeing a performance by Eric Hutchinson, she thereby concluded becoming a singer/songwriter was the route she wanted to pursue. She then came home and taught herself piano, moved back to NYC, started writing songs and gigging.

She is currently on the roster for Neon Entertainment and plays at colleges across the US. In NYC she has held residencies at: Pianos, Googies Lounge and The National Underground in addition to playing at: The Studio at Webster Hall, Mercury Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, The Living Room, The Bitter End, The Red Lion, Arlenes Grocery, Caffe Vivaldi, Sidewalk Cafe, Bowery Electric, Spike Hill and Union Hall among many others. She has also opened for: Ari Hest, AJ Smith, Musiac and for Eric Hutchinson.

Mikki will be releasing her first full length album "Wild <3" produced by the 2 time Grammy winning- Dave Clauss this fall with Purebred Records.
