Italian music, food, drink and atmosphere brought a crowd to "A Night in Little Italy Sotto le Stelle (Under the Stars)" Saturday for a lovely evening to benefit the Independence Italian Cultural Museum.
While the MaMa Mias performed and a silent auction took place, the crowd indulged in Italian sausage, spaghetti and meatballs, shrimp pesto, crabmeat au gratin, osa buca, pane cu l'oggia with fresh parmesan, canolli, tea, wine and other Sicilian foods and drink prepared by professional chefs. Robert Calmes performed solo.
A cross atop the Independence Italian Cultural Museum, the former Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, was lighted for the first time in 60 years.

The mission of the MaMa Mias Sicilian-Italian band is to preserve and perform Sicilian and Italian folk songs and Italian-American traditional songs, to volunteer and promote our rare and lovely Independence Italian Cultural Museum in Independence, Louisiana, and to do our part to help preserve and promote the endangered Sicilian Language, the language of our Sicilian immigrant ancestors which has been the forbidden in Sicily throughout the centuries.
