Bio
KOHALA's music, an acoustic instrumental blend of island, folk, and jazz, reflects the environment, landscape and culture of the Kohala region on the Big Island where the acoustic guitar trio lives. Comprised of three award-winning guitarists, Kohala began their performance career in Japan, where they continue to tour extensively in 1500 to 3000 seat concert halls.
The trio performs expertly crafted arrangements for acoustic guitars. Their live show includes anecdotes about the inspiration for their music: bossa-nova, jazz, reggae, slack-key guitar, Hawaiian music, world music, and more. While the band's recordings are instrumental, their live performances include some vocal songs with a hula dancer.
Tour venues have included Wolftrap (VA), Nashville Symphony Hall (Schermerhorn), Somerville Theater (Boston), Kumbwa Jazz Center (Santa Cruz), Throckmorton Theater (Mill Valley); Japan venues include NHK Concert Hall (Osaka), Kobe International Concert Hall, Aichi Concert Hall (Nagoya), Nakano Sun Plaza Hall (Tokyo), Sweet Basil, Blue Note Osaka, Blue Note Fukuoka, and concert halls throughout the Kansai area, Nagoya, and Tokyo, and Fukuoka. The trio has been featured in live performances and interviews on Japan's largest radio stations, including FM802 (Osaka), Tokyo FM, and ZIPFM (Nagoya), and J-Wave (Tokyo). The band has released 11 CDs since 1998.
