For Giovanni Perez, life began when he was 12 years old.
While he admits he always loved music, it was at that age he picked up the guitar.
Forgoing lessons, the aspiring musician taught himself how to play, and that maverick spirit and unbridled determination led him to become an accomplished player.
It was not long before Perez began writing songs that detailed his inner struggles and deepest thoughts.
These personal revelations led him to create a dramatic persona for himself known as Disheartened 6.
It has been a difficult and sometimes harrowing journey for Perez, but that path of self-discovery might lead the young guitarist and singer to a highly coveted spot on the upcoming Warped Tour.
"I have been bullied, let down and heartbroken," Perez said. "But I still find light in a dark place and I hope that people will see beyond the makeup that I wear and the image that I portray to discover real compassion in my music."
The tour, also known as the Vans Warped Tour, is a traveling rock festival that has made its way across the United States every year since it began in 1995.
The tour features bands that play punk rock, but it has included acts from other genres like hip-hop.
Organizers of the festival recognize the importance of encouraging aspiring musicians like Disheartened 6 by offering a chance to take the stage at one of the upcoming tour stops.
"I have been going to the Warped Tour since 2013 but this time I would like to be there on stage as a Disheartened 6," says Perez.
Perez has entered a contest to get onto the Warped Tour stage, but he needs fans to vote for his submissions via social media. The contest ends May 31.
Regardless of the outcome, Perez says performing as Disheartened 6 allows him to use music to confront and convey some of his deepest and most personal emotions. He hopes by telling personal stories through music, he can connect with listeners.

Disheartened has been featured on AMC's TALKING DEAD show. He was a finalist to be a guest on the couch for the WALKING DEAD talk show.

An underground artist that developed a following through live streaming. Through the internet world the growth of spreading a message of being different and love to others began.
Disheartened says "I feel for the people who feel abandoned, lost, depressed. That is what I've felt most of my life and because of that I always tried replying back to people who reached out to me on a daily basis".
Disheartened developed a relationship with a following that soon became dedicated towards him. As an underground artist he was able to inspire people that on their own got tattoos of Disheartened's lyrics and theme. Disheartened was blown away by that commitment.
