Bio

My song, "You Can't Sit Still," was selected as a semi-finalist ("Top 40") in the 2008 Music to Life songwriting contest. This song, and other semi-finalists, was featured in a recent special program on XM Radio 15 "The Village." "You Can't Sit Still" also received an honorable mention in the 2008 ISSA Songwriting Contest (Session I). My song, "A Legacy of Love," was named a finalist in the Contemporary Acoustic/Folk category in the "2007 Great American Song Contest."

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in three fields: history, politics, and music. This EPK is devoted to my "first love." My interest in history and politics, however, is often evident in my music (e.g. "Change is in the Air," "You Can't Sit Still," and "Ninth of November").

I have always been involved in things musical, as a singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist (guitar and piano). I have sung in a number of vocal ensembles, most notably, the critically acclaimed, vocal octet, Jubilate, performing on television, radio, and in numerous venues in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, including the Kennedy Center, the Folger Library, and the National Portrait Gallery. As a member of Jubilate, I have also recorded several albums of sacred and seasonal music, receiving airplay on local radio stations.

I began to arrange and write my own compositions in high school and college, where I wrote and published the popular, "Earlham Alma Mater Rag." As a member of Jubilate, I arranged several works for multiple voices, including Robert Schmerz's classic, "You Can Read Your Gideon Bible." During concerts of other secular music, I have also regularly performed such original songs as "Grandmother's Old Armchair," "Sleepytown Express," and "Simple Ploughboy."

Over the years, I have written numerous songs of love and war, family and faith, history and politics, and more, blending such diverse musical styles as folk, pop, rock, spirituals, the blues, and classical. I have not only set many traditional poems to music but have also written contemporary lyrics and melodies, including such favorites as "You Can't Sit Still," "The Answer," "Ninth of November," and "A Legacy of Love."
