"We Went to the Agenda Show to Ask People What "Streetwear" and "Hypebeast" Really Mean (Video)"

This week was all about the trade shows going down in NYC, and Complex News went down to Agenda at the Javits Center to check out some of the spring/summer 2015 collections and speak with some of the attendees and vendors. We asked them what "streetwear" means to them, and also what their thoughts were on the word "hypebeast," a term that gets thrown around a lot these days, for better or for worse. But what better place to get answers than in the heart of where streetwear transactions go down. Check out the video above for some insight from Agenda attendees themselves. - Complex Magazine

"NYC Collective MERK is the Musical Launchpad for Yeezy Season Models"

Earlier this month, a very rare intermingling of music and fashion went down in the heart of Soho, based in a low-key venue covered in black curtains and drenched in red lighting. Hosted by NYC collective MERK, the private event was billed as a launch for Milli MERK in the wake of his debut single, “Skrrt Cobain.” But it was the unannounced surprises that made the night all the more memorable.

Yeezy Season 3 model Mallory Merk arrived about 2 hours into the event and built up the crowd by performing her cover of Lil Yachty’s single, “1 Night,” while MERK mixed her live vocals with the original record.

Mike Will Made-It affiliate and Yeezy Season 1 model Spencer Lee then delivered a fiery performance of his highly anticipated, unreleased music to a devoted and rowdy audience. The night hit its emotional peak somewhere between Spencer jumping on the DJ table and the surprise entrance of Supreme ambassador Racks Hogan. Decked out with a full frontal grill, Hogan, also known as, “The Stylish Stoner,” announced it was his first performance that night. Attendees took to the mic as the event came to a close, among them Clintn Lord, who also modeled at West’s Madison Square Garden spectacle.

The event took place at Convicts NYC—a retail store that doubles as a digital media agency—which has become the home of “Parlay Thursdays,” a new bi-weekly event co-hosted by MERK and Convicts Radio. - Bullett Media

"The DapperAfrika Experience Presents The 'Melanin Man'"

Today we’re excited to premiere a new chapter in the DapperAfrika Experience. The impromptu Melanin Man shoot sees rapper Clint’N Lord out and about in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn under the creative direction of New York-based editorial and beauty director, choreographer, songwriter and wardrobe stylist Yasin Abdur, aka DapperAfrika and more recently, Uncle Juice Lord.

According to DapperAfrika, a melanin man is “someone who expresses himself in freedom even when the world is mad.”

The resulting shoot with Clint’N Lord was "an hour's work of being free-spirited,” he tells us over the phone.

On the issue of gentrification around Brooklyn, DapperAfrika maintains that no one can commercialize originality. “You can't take away their freedom of art.”

After all, originality is one of his trademarks. “I do my best to shift it back to originality,” he says of the DapperAfrika Experience.

Check out our premiere of the Melanin Man editorial, shot by Mari J Brooklyn, below. Keep up with DapperAfrika on Tumblr, Instagram and Facebook. - Okay Africa

“I want everyone to reach their full artistic potential. The video for Bicycles is a breakthrough for my fans because they get to see people who look just like them. Everyone can identify with someone in this video. My goal is to inspire the people to follow their dreams.Im just a reflection of hope.” - The Source Magazine

"Goes Off In Beast"

Clintn Lord is a living testament to the NYC hustle. Rooting his art in the abundance of the present, rather than the struggles of his past, the Brooklyn born rapper, director and model doesn’t stop at the dream––he works until it’s his reality. He got into rap as a kid, watching his older brothers freestyle at home––since then, he’s been making moves towards rap-fashion relevance in every way possible. The 24-year-old artist recently cameo’d on Keeping Up With the Kardashians after walking for Yeezy––a job he got just by finessing his way onto Kanye’s bus. Inspired by Obama, Basquiat and Tupac (same though,) Clintn Lord has his sights set on greatness.

BULLETT caught up with the artist to hear more about his journey. Read our interview with the artist and watch the “Beast” premiere, below.

Tell me about “Beast.” Where did the idea for the video come from?
I was inspired by Kanye’s and Jay-Z’s video for “Otis.” I remember how it made me feel at home, because it was all about the open sky and being reckless, but feeling comfortable doing it.

What about the track? What inspired it?
The track is about how I direct, and how I get my directing styles. I was referencing Steven Spielberg and Spike Lee. It’s all about art.

Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences are myself and the kids that look up to me.

Why do you think the fashion world has embraced rap?
I think style is environmental––clothes have personality. My jeans have rips––I skate, I’m always jumping off a wall and so it reflects. You’ll see diamonds next to a rip because it speaks to who I am. Some people may wear khakis all day. But where I’m from, you can’t sit in the same place all day or you’ll die.

What do you want people to take away from your work?
My friend Emory told me we’re all like reflections, and I feel like a reflection of hope––no matter what your circumstances are. I’ve been everywhere, and right now that’s enough. - Bullett Media
