"Creative Inspiration from "As Husband and Wife""

Remember back when we all received creative inspiration from my interview with Hadassah Carlson about her life and creativity? Well this week I had the honor of interviewing a duo that I've gotten to work with before: Andrea and Geno Miller from As Husband and Wife. They graciously shared with me a window into their creative outlet of music. Not only is their music full of talent and honestly, Andrea and Geno were some of my favorite clients I've worked with. I am very inspired by what they had to say about creativity and I hope you are as well!

Read to the end to find out where to find their brand new EP, Remember, just out this week! These photos are from the behind the scenes of recording the EP.

What does creativity mean to you?

G: Creativity is everything to me. Its a bridge a that connects my thoughts and my emotions and transforms to something that is tangible.

A: I see creativity as a tool, an outlet and opportunity to connect us to the creator of creativity and to others.

What's your favorite creative activity?

G: Sitting at a piano and transposing and composing my own melodies will always be my favorite. It can also be annoying because I can’t tell where my ears wants it to go. When I finally figure it out it I get the “ah hah” moment.

A: Well it’s changed since being a mom- I've had to alter my time a bit, I used to write lyrics and melodies constantly anywhere and everywhere- but now I just focus my energy in moments, mostly when my son is asleep, to write or journal, those seem to be the go to right now.

What project are you most proud of?

G: I’m proud of the project we just finished - Remember EP. There were a lot of obstacles that we, Andrea and I, had to overcome. During this process we cried and we were angry with each other and to cross the finish line and be able to release this EP was a feeling of triumph.

A: Yeah I would say this EP, each project we start seems to be drawing us to the next. Like Geno said - it was way more challenging than I thought because it wasn’t about being creative all the time, it was about making the right decisions. WE learned an insane amount of what to do and what not to do, cause you have to start somewhere!

What is a dream of yours?

G: I love to be on the road. To be able to incorporate that with music would be a dream come true. Touring is something I wanted to do from a very young age.

A: I have a lot of them! Gosh- to be able to make a full time living off of music, I would love to do Voiceovers someday (that sounds awesome!) And to teach my children to use their giftings no matter what.

What is something easily misunderstood about you?

G: The fact that I joke around A LOT and I think people think I don’t take music or my craft seriously.

A: I think people sometimes see me as just a vocalist, just someone to copy other people’s songs, but deep down I love writing and would even love to write for others, from spoken word to musical theater, I'd write it all!

I highly recommend you check out the brand new Remember EP. To purchase it with a bonus track, click here. Or you can find it on Spotify or Apple Music.

"CH2 Magazine"

Band: As Husband & Wife

What’s your sign?
Andrea Miller: Peace sign
Geno Miller: Sagittarius

Most underrated song that, in your opinion, should be a classic:
AM: “Sweet Disposition,” by The Temper Trap—best road trip song.
GM: “Georgia,” by Emily King.

Biggest compliment you’ve ever gotten from a fan?
AM: Someone once told me that I sound like the black Norah Jones! But honestly, when people tell me they feel closer to Jesus when they hear us sing worship songs, it’s truly an honor.
GM: The best compliment we’ve heard so far is that our voices blend so well together.

What is your favorite song to perform?
AM: “I Don’t Know You”—off of our EP. It brings me back to when I wrote it, while sitting on my bed with my first son when he was a baby—simple times.
GM: We do a version of “Hit the Road Jack,” by Ray Charles. I’m always excited to sing and play that song!

What do you sing in the shower?
AM: I’m one of those people who turns into an opera singer in the shower.
GM: I like to consider myself a rapper. So, I like to rap in the shower, which means I’m rapping Drake!

Favorite cereal?
AM: Oh’s—it’s a yellow box.
GM: Without a doubt, Frosted Flakes.

At what venue do you most like to perform?
AM: We love the Roasting Room; we have had so much fun there. But house concerts have been extra special.
GM: In Chicago, we did a Sofar Sounds show and loved it, because they transformed an awesome African restaurant into a listening room.

Most requested song at shows?
AM: We usually come with a prepared set list, so they end up being original songs.
GM: Our original song, “There’s Still Time.”

First concert you attended?
AM: Pretty sure it was Taylor Swift—no shame.
GM: Dave Matthews Band at Wrigley Field in Chicago—a night I won’t forget.

Favorite artist?
AM: Currently, I try to find good music for my two-year-old, so Ellie Holcomb’s children’s album Sing has been on repeat, and I actually love it. I also like funky artists like Lianne La Havas, Emily King, Yebba.
GM: I’m an old school guy. Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones—all those artists speak to my soul; but [my favorite] present day artist is Jon Bellion.

Place you go to get away from it all?
AM: Any kind of body of water.
GM: The golf course.

Do you tweet, gram or book? What’s your handle?
AM: I barely understand what Twitter is, but Instagram and Facebook@ashusbandandwife.
GM: I’m terrible with social media. I barely post anything, lol.

Finish this verse as if it were the hook of a song:
“Sally went down to the bayou…”
AM: Hoping to sit beside you…

Who would star as you in the epic retelling of your life on film?
AM: Hmmm … Zoey Deschennel; she’s odd like me.
GM: People say I look like Phil LaMarr, so I would get him to play me.

First instrument you learned to play?
AM: I barely made it through piano lessons, then tried every instrument you can think of in middle school.
GM: The African rain stick—just joking. Piano.

Song you were thrilled to finally master?
AM Oh, gosh; I am one of those people who feels like I haven’t mastered anything—always room to improve, but I do a pretty good Shakira impersonation.
GM: “Sir Duke,” by Stevie Wonder.

What do you wish you knew more about?
AM: I have a list a mile long, but for now, I wish I knew more about cooking; I love food
GM: Just like most men, I already know everything.

What famous musician would you love to sing a duet with?
**AM:**Maybe a powerhouse singer like Adele, Lady Gaga or Celine Dion.
GM: A singer/songwriter named MARO Musica or Cory Henry.

What animal do you most identify with?
AM: A little teacup pig; they are so cute, and they sprint around everywhere.
GM: A black panther—mainly the superhero.

If you got super-famous and you had to change your name, what would your new name be?
AM: I would hope our sons join along in the family band; then I would call us As Husband & Wife and Kin
GM: That’s easy: G Master Flex. - Interview Style

"Charlevoix native releases new EP with husband"

CHARLEVOIX — Andrea Miller, a Charlevoix native and former Ragamuffin, recently released “Remember,” a new three-song album, with her husband under the name As Husband and Wife.

The duo, currently living in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, got their start in Chicago when they met in college.

“It was around 2013 when we really started the band and playing together,” said Miller’s husband, Geno.

Following college, the two moved to South Carolina to work as worship leaders, which they say helped propel them forward as musicians.

“It really helped launch us,” Andrea said. “The church really helped us get the right tools and equipment we needed and made sure we were good to go. It was a new area and they really made us feel like we were home with their support and encouragement to start writing and recording.”

The two took that support and encouragement and spent the good part of a year in three different studios working on their album.

The album features three songs revolving around different styles, including folk, gospel and even funk, with underlying messages about faith and the life and spiritual journey.

The album was released on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and, according to the duo, has gotten great reception so far.

“It has been neat to see everyone’s take on each song,” Andrea said.

“It’s been a dream for both of us to achieve this and what’s great is we were able to do it together. As young artists we thought doing this might have happened individually, but God had different plans and brought us together.”

Most recently, the duo played in Charlevoix at Worship on the Water during this year’s Charlevoix Venetian Festival and, even though they are living out of state, they would love to come back Andrea’s home to play a show.

More information about As Husband and Wife can be found on their website at www.ashusbandandwife.com. Their new album can be found on different music streaming services. - Sean Miller
