About Son Latino Band
Brandon , MB, CA
Born out of the influx of Latin-American immigrants to Brandon, Manitoba; Son Latino Band has grown into much more than a community band. Since its inception, Son Latino Band has become an important staple in an ever-growing multicultural community which has seen the stages of the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, Winnipeg’s Folklorama, Regina Latin Festival, and the Brandon Folk Festival.
Son Latino Band has been best described as a band that has fun. While many bands of a similar size and nature have an ever changing roster, Son Latino Band has managed to keep the same core members since its beginnings, and has become a close knit group of friends that has remained for years.
Fourteen musicians from five different countries join together to combine Latin rhythms and dance beats with jazz improvisation. Led by master Latin Piano player, Jaime Chinchilla, Son Latino Band plays a mix of Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Raspa, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha and Bolero. The bands high energy performance is created by three singers, one keyboard and bass player, a traditional three-piece percussion section, and a six-piece horn section. They play both original music, composed by its members, and some of the most well-known Latin American standards in a big band style. The cultural diversity of Son Latino's band members reflects in their music. The songs, sung in both Spanish and English, speak about a variety of topics such as immigration, love, everyday life in Manitoba, and many other universal topics.
