“Mariachi Music Gains Popularity Across Ethnic Lines Mariachi music has long been popular with San Antonio's large Mexican-American population. But among the young people performing at this event was 12-year-old Anani Rhames, an African-American girl who fell in love with the songs she heard in Mexican restaurants and on local radio stations. "I like 'Las Margaritas,' which is about daisies and I like 'El Pastor,' which is about a shepherd," she said. Anani can relate to rural themes because she lives on a ranch and sometimes sings to her horses. "You can actually connect with them. You can build a bond with them," she said. "When they hear you their ears kind of perk up and they are like [it is as if they were saying] 'hmmm, interesting." Concert producer said Anani demonstrates the diverse appeal of mariachi music. "She feels this very strong connection and love for the music and it sends a very powerful message to our entire community that this music is truly international.”

"An element that took the event by surprise was the arrival in Saltillo by Anani "La Charrita" a small native of San Antonio, Tx who gave the audience a performance."”

“Tween sensation Anani Rhames is the only African-American mariachi in the finals. She's precocious, big-voiced and has been singing mariachi since she was a tot, "captivated" by mariachis at Mi Tierra. "I like the way it makes me feel and the story it tells," said Rhames, 12, who has showcased at SXSW Music & Media Conference. But there's something more important going on. "I'm making friends across racial lines," she said. "She's taken it on to be a leader. Music is a universal language and crosses all cultural boundaries. She fell in love with the culture. She's never let it be an obstacle, even though she's run into opposition. I'm sure some people thought she was a tad bit confused. But she has a Latin soul. It's kind of jaw-dropping." Rhames wins a crowd over. "My traje gives me superpowers," she said. "When I perform, I'm very nervous. But when I have my traje on, I just get in the zone. Man, I can do anything." That fresh self-expression, determination and pride starts young.”
