Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Cano.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amber. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
One day, at the end of class, my 8th-grade choir teacher pulled me aside and said, “you’ve got something special. I would love to have you after class a few days a week for some voice lessons if you’d like”. I excitedly agreed. What started out as Disney and Broadway’s songs quickly turned into full-fledged classical voice lessons from a well-known opera singer, Jeanne Kostelic. Throughout my teen years, I entered and won many contests for singing, specifically opera and Broadway genres. Fast forward to today, I have been in a couple of rock band projects and have my solo project now, which has been a blast so far! I’ve learned so many lessons throughout this journey and so humbled and honored to be where I am now. I’m excited about my future!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A smooth road? Absolutely not! There have been many struggles and obstacles along the way. As a female, its nearly impossible to get the respect any person deserves in the music scene, especially the hip hop scene. Being an r&b singer, I find myself in the hip hop scene a lot! There are more men than women in that scene. It’s a tough one. If you can’t handle criticism and people not liking you, this isn’t for you. Plain and simple. “You’ve got to have a steel heart to survive this dream.” as MAC Frenzi says in one of his songs. Us women must stay strong and pull together. If we don’t do this, we are fighting one another. Don’t do that. No matter what your dreams are, stay strong and stick with your fellow women! We must stick together!

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Aside from being a singer/songwriter, I pride myself on being a positive role model for others out there, children, women, and men. Something that is very important to me is empathy and love for one another as well as self-love. If I can change just one person’s view of themselves, I know I’ve succeeded. I will fight until my last breath is taken from me for love, unity, and empathy for one another. I want those hurting, those who feel alone, scared, angry; I want others to know it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to feel the feelings and that I’m here. I have love for you, even if no one else doesn’t. It’s important to me that everyone feels this. I just want the hurt and judgments gone.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I feel that any opportunity that a woman wants, she is well-positioned for. I believe all women are well-positioned for whatever their heart desires. If you don’t try, you won’t ever know. And those “what if’s” stick around forever! - Voyage Denver
