ALBUM REVIEWS
Aimless Again – “2020 Future Punks”
September 17, 2018

Aimless Again is a Punk/Alternative band out of Long Island. The band formed back in 2007, when the guys were in 7th grade. It is comprised of Jake Ferring (lead vocals/guitar), Anthony Denapoli (bass/vocals) and Seany Juevos (drums). They started out recording “shitty basement tracks” and since then, have released four albums, “Bill!” (2011), “The North Shore Demo” (2013), “Live in Patchogue” (2016) and their newest release, “2020 Future Punks” (2018). The new album is a fast paced, hard-hitting, classic Punk album. Many bands now label themselves Punk, but lack the authenticity to attract a Punk fan. Aimless Again tackles the classic Punk sound with extremely catchy instrumentals and lyrics on “2020 Future Punks”; an album that is sure to gain a ton of attention!

After a few member changes and playing shows consistently for three years, Aimless Again released a killer long-awaited album. When I spoke with the band, they were able to share what the new album means to them. “2020 Future Punks is a 11 track return to form for the band. It’s a mixture of what people loved about the first two records but touching on deeper themes of time and the world we live in with a humorous embrace and solution to the problems we face today as a human race. We kinda wanted this album to save the planet and really soak in the emotions and deeper themes of it.”

“2020 Future Punks” is an awesome album that everyone should be listening to. The album begins with a short intro that leads right into Shredder. This is the first song I heard from the band and I immediately enjoyed it. Aimless Again begins the song with a fast guitar riff that emulates the name “shredder”. The band tackles the theme that they discussed earlier, of the problems we face each day. “Destruction is happening all around me”, the first line of the song basically highlights what the world is coming to now. When I first heard this song, I immediately had flashbacks to sitting in my room as a kid, playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. This song would fit perfectly on the soundtrack. I can picture playing the hangar level and rocking out to this song!

The album continues on with Scream and My Mistake, two of my favorite songs on the album. The lyrics to Scream are extremely catchy and will definitely have fans singing at the top of their lungs at shows. “Cause I’m, uptight, alright, I hear you screaming through the night, uptight, alright. Once more, feel your body walking out the door, once more, right out the door.” The ending of this song is what is gonna make fans go wild during the show. The song takes a much heavier tone, with screaming vocals and harder instrumentals. I love the way Aimless Again is able to effortlessly transition the entire feel of the song and make it sound amazing. My Mistake slows down the pace of the album. It reminds me so much of the style that Weezer plays and it is great!

A few other songs that stand out to me are Turn & Run, Rejuvenate, Celebration and 7 Lonely Days. Turn & Run has such sick guitar riffs that hook you! It reminds me of the early days of Taking Back Sunday and Brand New. The instrumental bridge that comes in at about 2:00 is one of the sickest I’ve heard in a while. I can just picture the chaos of the circle pits that will ensue during this! And I have to mention the Home Alone reference at the end, with Kevin yelling “Do you hear me? I’m not afraid anymore!” Rejuvenate might be my favorite song on “2020 Future Punks”. This song screams Long Island music scene. It reminds me so much of the music that flourished during the early 2000’s here on the island. If this song came out 15 years ago, it would have been a smash hit.

Celebration is another awesome song. The song begins with the gang singing along, something that every person in any crowd of theirs will happily scream with the band. The high energy that this song has makes listening so much fun. It reminds me of the extremely high energy you hear on a Streetlight Manifesto song, minus the horn section. The final song (besides the instrumental outro) on “2020 Future Punks” is 7 Lonely Days. This song is extremely catchy. The first third of the song is acoustic and then leads into the full band playing. It is a much slower pace than the rest of the album, but caps it off perfectly. It is a song that you will have on repeat all the time!

Aimless Again went back to the studio and recorded a banger! “2020 Future Punks” is a sick album that deserves to be heard by everyone. Seany Juevos stated “we’re just really proud of it, but we made it knowing that our next album to follow it has ALOT of room to improve and this record plants the seed of growth for us as a real band that can penetrate and inspire in the years to come”. With that being said, I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Aimless Again. "Screaming Fastcore"

Punk Rock from Port Jefferson, New York. Aimless Again has to be one of the most dedicated bands I've seen, these guys have been working together since they were in middle school! They have been at this for a while.

Intro / Shredder
What a great way to start this album off, this song will hit you with nostalgia, as when I hear it I think of 90s skatepunk bands. It is an extremely catchy song and it is already stuck in my head. Awesome opener track, I like the way the intro cuts right into the second track.

Scream
This is the third track on the record, this song is just as nostalgic as the first when it comes time to sounding like 90s skatepunk, only 3 tracks in and this album is already one of my favorites, the lyrics in this song as sung greatly, and are kinda relatable, which is great.

My Mistake
A calm track in comparison to the others so far, which I love when bands have variety sound wise. This is another song people would possibly relate to, a lot of emotion went into this track which is obvious, you can hear it and that is awesome! This is an amazing record.

Interlude / Turn & Run
This song kind of reminds me of NOFX during the opening riff. I usually say this is in my reviews a lot and it is one of my guidelines when I review stuff, this sounds like something from a Tony Hawk soundtrack, and it is true. I love songs that remind me of my childhood, this song does a great job doing that!

Tracer
This song has the perfect amount of melody, amazing instrumental work as well, this band works so well together, so much chemistry. and for that amazing teamwork we get one of the best skatepunk records to come out of New York.

Rejuvenate
Opening with a slower intro, this song is probably my favorite song on the album, although it is pretty hard to determine a "favorite" track on this record. I have not had anything negative to say about this album so far. It has impressed me with every track.

Celebration
Here we are, the second to last track on the album, throughout this record my opinion has not changed, straight up goodness and that is definitely the case here, another great punk rock song, even futher cementing this as an amazing record.

Outro / 7 Lonely Days
As a closer for the record this is both an outro track, as well as a 6 and a half minute song. Both serve as great outros but 7 Lonely Days is pretty much the grand finale to a dope record, a lot of hard work went into this album and it definitely has not gone unnoticed.

Conclusion: As I said multiple times in the review, this is a great record. A really early candidate for the Top 10 list of the best albums of 2018. These dudes did an amazing track on creating this record! I can't wait for everyone to hear it. -

"Kraykulla"

Aimless Again is a Punk Rock group from Port Jefferson Station NY Formed in 2007.This is their new album and it was time for me to review it for this zine.

cover

The album is made of 8 songs plus intro, interlude and outro. Aimless Again play loud, melodic and gnarley punkrock like it was meant to be on the hot streets and hotter nights. You cant but pogo listening to “Shredder” or “Rejuvenate”. Personally, I like my punkrock to be more faster, upbeat and more hardcore than punkrock. In my humble opinion, the songs on this record are a bit too slow for my taste. For me the best song on this record is for sure “Turn & Run” being a true punkrock anthem for the live gigs. As I understand, these guys are unsigned, so labels, if you read this review, please sign these guys so they can further provide us with some quality punkrock. -

"Long Island Sound"

INTRODUCTIONS:
I bet Aimless Again would be good bar buddies with The Leftovers. Aimless Again is a Port Jefferson based punk rock band that has been playing together since 2007. Jake Ferring (vocals/guitar), Seany Juevos/Sean Wuorio (drums), and Anth “Lost Boy” DeNaopoli (bass/synth/vocals) take a melodic approach to their music, including lots of alternative and pop punk influences. Aimless Again have three albums under their belts: BILL! (2011), The North Shore Demo (2013) and 2020 Future Punks (2018). Jake and his cousin Brian Ferring wrote and produced BILL! and The North Shore Demo together. 2020 Punks was recorded with Brian Crowe at The End Recording Studio, and “7 Lonely Days” the finale track was done with Frank Bones at VuDu Studios.

Aimless Again has stood the test of time, watching other bands form and disband over the course of a decade. They attribute their continued progress and dedication to the bonds of friendship the music is based on. They make music to help others through rough times, bringing people together and encouraging everyone to be their weird unique selves.

When asked what their favorite song to play was, the band provided very different answers:

Seany Juevos: My favorite song is “Outro” so I dont gotta listen to us anymore.
Jake Ferring: My favorite song is “Celebration” because i'm a party kinda guy.
Anthony “Lost Boy”: My favorite song is “Shredder” because I shred sick bass licks.

TOURS & SHOWS

aimless again; 2020 future punks; I suppose I might agree with those who say it’s inconsistent, raw, rough even, but there’s still some good stuff here … for me, slick production isn’t punk … it’s not supposed to be squeaky clean … I like a bunch of this new ny punk

"Groovy Tunes"

Long Island has a rich history in the emo/punk scene from the likes of Taking Back Sunday and Brand New to Glassjaw and Envy on the Coast and now we have Aimless Again ready to take the scene by storm. 2020 Future Punks probably went under the radar for most in 2018, but it’s not too late to hop on that bandwagon. It’s a tight, punchy, 34 minutes of pure unadulterated punk rock.

They come out the gates swinging with the in-your-face “Shredder” clocking in just under 2 minutes which is everything you need in an album opener. It gets right to the point, gives you a quick look at what Aimless Again is about, and sets up the rest of the album. The bridge in “Scream” gives me flashbacks (and some slight PTSD) of being in a pit screaming back at the band on stage and this shit is straight out of 2002 in all the right ways. This is a damn punk anthem for the ages right here. “My Mistake” is for sure one of my favorites from the album. Its lyrics are relatable, I subconsciously found myself head bobbin’ along, and it’s catchy as fuck. “So what, who cares, fuck my life, cut my hair” was stuck in my head all damn day. My other favorite, “7 Lonely Days” is a near perfect 6 and a half minute punk ballad. This song has that indescribable element that some songs have that just brings you back time and time again. Some genius songwriting right here.

2020 Future Punks is the next step for Aimless Again. They leave no room to spare, packing the album with punchy, in your face, catchy songs; relatable lyrics that sometimes hit way too close to home; and a small pinch of nostalgia that shows where they’ve come from and gives a glimpse into the history of the scene. They are definitely ahead of their time and I’m excited to see where they go from here. -
